ANDERSON Principal History Commerce Boys’ Athletics MR. DON C, HERRINGTON Mathematics Psychology Science On the seventeenth day of December 1933, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hughes announced the birth of a daughter whom was given the name Mary Ann born that morning ona farm near Axtell, Kansas. From Axtell, I moved with my folks to a farm near Home, Kansas, then to Beattie Kansas where I attended my first 3 years of school, then I moved with my parents to a farm near Bern Kansas, where upon attending school for five years I graduated with the Eighth Grade Class of 1948. Then I moved to Oneida and enrolled in the Fall of 1948 asa Freshman and now I have completed all four years of my High School Education.in Oneida. .During these four years of school I have participated in 4 years of basketball,, 1 year of softball, volleyball, 3 years of Glee Club, and took part in 2 plays Just Ducky and Apron String Revolt.?’ Senior Class History In the year 1948, early in September there set sail over the Sea of Knowledge a Magnificent fleet proudly bearing aloft floating banners of blue and gold. This fleet was headed for a far distant land called the land of Graduation, which could be reached only after a long voyage of four years over this much troubled, but to them, unknown sea. There were four isles--Freshman; Sophomore; Junior; and Senior to be thoroughly explored before reaching this promised land, The ones leaving on this voyage were: Retha McCann, Darlene Shuler, Lois Campbell and Mary Ann Hughes, They enjoyed several parties during the first part of this journey. The second week in September, the Freshmen were initiated. Initiation costumes were quite hilarious, Retha McCann wore shorts, a man’s shirt, and a long black sock with a blue ribbon for a garter, Darlene Shuler sported blue jeans, inside out, and a man’s shirt. Lois Campbell appeared in an old green dress with a girdle on the outside. Mary Ann Hughes arrived in white shorts anda blouse, All had uncombed hair with green ribbons, and they were barefooted. After the initiation, they journeyed to Sycamore Springs where they were treated to a picnic dinner by the upperclassmen, In the afternoon everyone enjoyed skating. On their first class party, they all went to the movie, ‘‘The Babe Ruth Story’’, in Sabetha. As they neared the isle of Sophomores they felt their heads begin to swell, and thought themselves very wise indeed. Upon landing they found that they were no longer Freshmen, but Sophomores, much like those they had met the year before, but much wiser. Everything was now quite different from Freshman Isle. Retha McCann drifted from our midst to work in Clay Center, and Lois Campbell was in the hospital in Kansas City when the term started and decided not to enroll this term. Then Darlene Shuler left the Sophomore Class the sixth week of the second semester. At last Junior Isle was reached with only one voyager, Mary Ann Hughes, left to land. Since there was only one girl the Junior Class did not have any parties, The class sponsor was Mrs. Mary Kibler. Mary Ann busied herself selling wrapping paper to sponsor the Junior - Senior banquet, and the High School put on a three act play named “ Just Ducky’’ with proceeds going to the Junior Class. They now set sail for the last and most important isle of all, Senior Isle, with still only one who reached it safely. The Junior- Senior banquet was held in Topeka on May 3rd. They had dinner at the ‘‘Ranch House’’ --fried chicken and all the trimmings. Later they went to ‘‘Meadow Acres’’ and enjoyed an evening of dancing. They returned home in the wee-wee hours of May 4th. At the end of this year they found that Senior Isle was the stepping-off place into the vast territory of the Promised Land. The stepping--off place was named Graduation, anda great concourse of people met to watch the only Senior take this short journey on May 15th. And now the four long years have passed; the Freshmen of 1948 is the Senior of 1952. She has had many experiences during her voyage, of which the enjoyable ones far outweigh the un,!easant ones. As this senior scans the horizon from the stepping-stone of G. duation, she will see many conquests to be made and believes that in the future, as in the past, she will show herself prepared to meet any test pu to her. a) A a ia US ae) ee = a 5 The Juniors SHARON GORMELY Basketball....,. modabadan «+. l1-Year SoG luDssersscbextseecestess 3-Years AURELLIA GROSE LUCILLE REASY z Basketball.. woee 2-Years Basketball,.
