THE OINAWEEA 1924 The Champronshrp Game XX atch thrt called Coach Brown to one of hrs plas ers He w as trsrng to burld a charrrpron shrp teanr for the Walkerwrlle Hrgh School There were onlv a few games left to play rnd they were rn second place wrth the Xrcksburg Hrgh rn the lead Ther strll had two games on therr lrst left to play and rt was necessary to wrn both of these to get rnto frrst place Percy Hrcks the school dude hrd for basketball and showfd qurte a brt at thc forward posrtrorr rnd after game was grverr the frrst place on the was hrs good all around playrng that an rrnportrnt factor rn the success of rn the last few games trred out of abrlrty the frrst tearrr had been the team Each team rn the league had played twelve games and Walkervrlle and Vrcksburg had won all therr games but one but Vrcksburg on ac count of a forfert from another team rn the frrst of the year was ahead Xvalkervrlle had an rmportrnt game that com wrth Sherrn rn whrch was rn thrrd they had won srx strarght games of the hardest teams rn the league Loach Brown had good rerson to rng Frrday place and from some Therefore Shermans floor and rt was known played on rn the lergue that rt was a ve rv hard team to beat on rts own floor The day crme at last and the boys left rn frne sprrrts for the other school There were about frfty of the students and townspeople go rng along wrth them so they would not lack support from the srde lrnes when they went out on the floor everbodv cheered for thenr The game was fast and excrtrng The score at the end of the frrst hrlf was 12 10 rn favor of therr opponents XX hen they went rnto the dressrng room the Coach gave them a talkrrrg to and told them to get out there and wrn the honors for the old school and they went out vowrng to do therr best The second hrlf started wrth .r bang The Sherman boys shot two baskets be fore a rrrrn ute was up and therr rooters were yellrrrg lrke mad But therr scorrng stopped wrth those two baskets The Ralkervrlle boys found them elves and held them down But they were un able to do much themselves rn the w aw of scor rng They managed to slrp rn a basket now and then so that wrth frve mrnutes left to go the score was tred 16 all It w rs then the real battle begun The Sherrrran boys were gorng at top speed and rt was all the guards and cen ter of the other team could do to stop them Wrth Just a nrrnute left to go Percy slrpped rn a neat basket from the center of the floor It was hrs fourth basket The whrstle blew wrthout further scorrng The Vt alkervrlle boys were very happy over the outcome of the game and they saw therr chances for coprng the pennant rncrease 100'Z, For Sherman had beaten Vrcksburg bv one pornt rn therr gamt last week The week before the Vrcksburg game the boys practrced harder than for any game before And when the day rolled around for the game even the Coach saw that therr chance was good The game was to be played at Walkervrlle and rt gave the boys a lrttle advantage but Vrcksburg was noted for the fact that they could play about as well on one floor as on another so they drdn t get too confrdent The trnre for the game arrrved at last and the boys took therr usual places and shook hands wrth therr opponents as was the custom The referee blew the whrstle and the game was started It wrs anybodys game from the frrst other and the score see sawed between the two teams At the end of the frrst half it was fif teen aprece The Coach gave them a real talkrng to be tween halves and they went forth to show Vrcksburg how the game of basketball rs sup posed to be plryed But the Vrcksburg fellows came forth wrth the same thought and the game contrnued as fast as ever nerther srde havrng the advantage Near the end of the game the center for the Vrcksburg team dropped a neat brsket rn and a monrent later one of the guards followed hrs example The Vrcksburg rooters thought sure that the game was therrs but Percy got loose and netted the ball and rrght after by a neat drrbble through the opposrng team tred the score The whrstle blew as the referee was tossrng up the ball and the game ended tred They rested a mrnute and started to play a rrve nrrnute over trnre per od Percy was deter- rnrned to score another basket thrs perrod but was unable to do anythrng untrl the last thirty seconds when Percy and the other forward Frank passed through the opposrng team and scored The champronshrp was won for Walker,- vrlle WILFRED SCHLIFLEY 67 , . rr v . . . .
