The main purpose of a high school yearbook is to memorialize the school year in words and pictures. In the years to come, the yearbook becomes a reference tool about this year; so an awesome responsibility falls to the Onarquois staff--the historians of OHS. 18 First Row—D. Gibson, S. Johnson, B. On Tuesday, we observed hillbilly day; on Wednesday, everyone wore their favorite colors; on Thursday, we observed Halloween day and everyone wore some scary costume. School color day rounded off the week. For the first time since 1970, we had floats and for the first time in many years, we had a homecoming parade. Many organizations from within and without the school took part. The dance on Saturday night ended the week-long celebration. Zolot and Company provided the music. For the second time, OHS celebrated Christmas with a pre-holiday formal dance. This year’s theme was Christmas in Central Park and the theme was carried out with park benches and quaint old-style street lamps. Lighted trees and colorful glass ornaments completed the illusion. The Eastridge High School dance band provided the music for the starry eyed couples. 25 “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN” The 1974 Junior-Senior Prom was held at Century 21 in Champaign-Urbana on May 3rd. This was the first time in many years that prom was held anywhere other than Kankakee. The evening began with a buffet-style dinner and continued with the dance featuring BBC . The room was decorated with silver and blue stars and blue streamers. The theme was Stairway to Heaven , a very appropriate one since the prom was held on the twentieth floor of the lovely, new Champaign Hilton. While the Juniors were planning this prom, they hoped it would be one that nobody would ever forget, and they feel that they succeeded. This was the best attended prom Onarga had had in many years. 27 28 APRIL 26,27 and 28 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN CAST OF CHARACTERS Annie Oakley . Donna Claypool Ftank Butler . Bob Zirkle Dolly Tate . This is the second Broadway Musical done through the cooperative efforts of these two departments. This was a very difficult show to do in our small school. Including all committees, well over half of all the students in the high school and a few Jr. high students were utilized. The show was presented on three dates to a total crowd of just under five hundred. There's No Business like Show Business was our theme, long after the applause died away. 30 OHS GRIDIRON ‘73 In Mr. John Kuntz’s last year as CHS football coach, our Indians distinguished themselves. They finished in a tie for second place in the V. Conference, due to a highly questionable decision by the refs in one of the late-season games. In spite of this injustice, pride, school spirit, and good sportsmanship were the underlying features of the season. Mr. Kuntz's decision to resign his post as football coach marks the end of a period marked by high dedication and a successful era in OHS football. The successors to this coach and his team will, no doubt meet this challenge. i m 32 Front Row--M. Henrichs, D. Galvan, J. Bradshaw, C. Ahlden. BackRow--T. Siebert, B Zirkle, M. Coleman, J. Far more people pay to watch basketball at Onarga than to watch football. What has brought about this change? Two years when we really had the horses , as they say. Excellent records for two years, and four consecutive defeats of the arch-rival Owls have served to make our cagers number one—at least to the loyal fans. 37 FOUR SUCCESSIVE DEFEATS FOR GHS OWLS Coach Marshall, K. CHARLES WATSON SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Watson, completing his seventh year as Onarga’s chief educator, has achieved almost universal rapport; rapport with students, teachers, the community, and other area administrators. Everyone is Charlie’s friend and confidant. OHS is truly fortunate in the front office. FRAN LEE UNIT SECRETARY Frannie , as she is affectionately called by everyone, is so busy and so capable that all us come within her sphere nearly everyday. Her friendly smile, pretty face, and reassuring ways can brighten the drabbest days! 50 MR. JACK CAMPBELL OHS PRINCIPAL This man is a very busy and versatile administrator. At one time he's a first aid helper for a 5th grader's knee; then he's a counselor to a worried parent; later a Senior trying to gain entrance to a college is seeding advice; still later, an errant youth needs to be put back in line. All these and many more are given what they need and sent on their way by this understanding man. JANET WREDE A new but familiar face appeared in our south office this year. Miss Wrede , who graduated from OHS in 1967, has returned as library assistant and half-time secretary to the principal. She is old enough to be responsible, but young enough to understand the students. She is a welcome addition to our staff, and we hope she stays for a long time to come. Not much time for the Seniors to see all there is in St. Louis; but by constant activity and no time for rest we made it! In our ramblings, we managed to see the world famous St. Louis Arch; Busch stadium, home of the Cardinals; the lush Botanical Gardens; the St. Louis Zoo and Grant's Farm, and the trip was topped off with a visit to a Mississippi showboat for dinner and a play. As much fun as anything was the companionship on the bus and in the hotel rooms. This may well be the last time for us to be together. We have completed our last carefree year, and now we must assume the reins of leadership.. .leadership of all organizations, all teams, everything! We area small class taking over for a large and talented Senior group. Can we do it? It will be a real challenge--but we can do it! We will do it! We must do it! 72 llH The Junior Class was active in Homecoming events, diama club, music and all other phases of life at O. H.S. The prize for first place float was carried away by this talented group. 73 74 Debbie Bailey Mary Bailey Wendy Bailey Diane Brantley Cheryl Campbell Belinda Dannehl Gaila Fink Alfredo Galvan Monte Harris Scott Hasselbring Vicki Hornback Sandi Hurtado Jim Kanosky John Kuntz Tom Legan Magda Macz President--Pam Thomas, Vice-President--Cheryl Campbell, Secretary--Laurie Zick, Trea surer--Joanie Morgan. Two short years down, two to go. So far school has been good; classes, games, meetings, parties, practices, rehearsals, and fun. More than anything, fun! Next year, upperclassmen! More responsibility, harder classes and, if possible, even more fun. 80 In line with our state, local and national policies relating to our environment, we Sophomores spent three Saturdays this spring picking up the trash from the streets of Onarga. FUN and they paid us too! Three more years to go and each one will be better than the others. We sold Kathryn Beich candies for our money project this year. When we finished our campaign, Onarga was fatter and happier, and our class was richer. ONARQUOIS STAFF- 74 CO-EDITORS ANNETTE SCHJERVHEIM BARBARA NIELSEN SPONSOR MR. MALONE JR. Over two thousand dollars had to be raised; thousands of pictures needed to be sorted and resorted; thousands of words had to be composed and typed; and hundreds of hours were spent. Finally the cartons of materials were sealed and mailed to Texas. This is a gargantuan job for these people, but they were equal to it. Can you ever think of any better way for the last and weary travelers to go? It seems to me a crime that we should age these fragile times should never slip us by a time you never can or shall erase As friends together watch their childhood fly. Making friends for the world to see let the people know you got what you need. With a friend at hand you will see the light if your friends are there then everything’s all right.
