Moment: (mo'ment), n. the smallest portion of time; an instant; a time of excellence; a stage in historical or logical development. These four years of high school that we are now facing make up one of the many moments in time. Although they seem like an eternity they actually form only a small portion of our life. This moment is one of the most important periods we could possibly experience, because it will prepare us for our future. Besides gaining the background and skills required for college and jobs, we fully develop our own personalities and learn to understand one another. So, we move along through this moment of life. 1 CONTENTS Introduction 1 Seniors 15 Underclassmen 27 Administration 41 and Faculty Activities 47 Sports 69 Ads 87 Melissa Cultra Co-Editors Marilyn Wilken Darlene Reed Business Mr. Malone Manager Yearbook Advisor Yearbook Photographers Frobish Studio Onarga Leader Review Various Student Photographers Together we live as friends; helping each other over rough spots which occur so frequently in this mixed up world of ours. Then, when our troubles are over, we can laugh and think back only to see how small they had been. As one, we shared the fun and good times that came to us this year. We hoped that each others’ dreams would come true as well as our own. We work as a team reaching our goals. But never forget to take advantage of our good times with a laugh. And take time out just to think about our moments together. 5 6 The look of delight while licking an ice cream cone; or the sign of relief after winning a race or the dreamy stare of disappointment after losing a game are all emotions. They make up our personalities. Our facial expressions reflect our feelings like a mirror. They range from a crying whimper to a hysterical laugh to a smile of love. But each reaction is different; each time you laugh it is a unique moment of emotion. 7 8 A victory and a wonderful feeling. Just to know that you have succeeded. A great relief to know that now it is all over and it ended with a victory. We worked together to obtain these triumphs, and together with combined powers we’ve accomplished these ultimate goals. We have succeeded not only in sports but also in every day activites like our school studies, and many other problems that come our way throughout our lives. Yet, with the help of our friends we win over our problems, and continue to go onward through these times of trouble. We go on only, it seems, to celebrate these moments of triumph. 10 We look back at yesterday and see what it brought. After examining our mistakes, we try to find a better sol-tion. Then we look at today, all the problems we face need solutions. We must find the best solution; the right one that won’t haunt us tomorrow. Today, we have to learn to cope with math, history, and science problems; but they are only a sample of the real problems, the ones we’ll face in the world. Now, we look ahead to tomorrow. What will it bring? Will the solutions we find today be tomorrow’s mistakes? No one really knows; yet we continue to gain knowledge as we live this life with its moments of thought. 11 A lot of things happened this year, things that make it different from any other. Things that make it worth remembering. Seniors, you won’t forget that Class Trip or Commencement Day for a long time. Juniors, you had the planning for the prom and class rings to look back on. Getting your license was the big event for the Sophomores. Freshmen, you have had your first taste of high school. Then, there are things we all remember: the 3:30 bell and the rush to leave the building; the football and basketball games; all the parties and just regular fun. They are all our moments to remember. 13 % JANET LYNN ALSIP Marching Band 1,2,3,4; ConCert Band 1,2,3,4; Mixed Chorus 1,2,3,4; President 4; Girl’s Chorus 1,2,3,4; Swing Choir 3,4; Solo and Ensemble 1,2,3,4; Spanish Club 1,2,3, President 2; Library Club 2,3,4; Drama Club 1,2,3; Yearbook 2,3; G.A.A. 1; Pep Club 2,3; Safety Club 2; Class Secretary 4; National Honor Society 3,4 Vice President 4; Cheerleader J.V. 1,2; Homecoming Court 2,4; Miss Merry Christmas 4; “Bye Bye Birdie” 4; Who’s Who in American High Schools 4; WIU Chorus Camp 3; Illinois State Scholar 4. Ten dollars, fifty dollars, their first $100.00—then an unavoidable expense, and back down. Oh, the excitement, the heartbreaks, and the fun!! What was all of this for? Well their funds went many places, but they went mainly for their Senior-trip. Gatlinburg Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains was an ambitious destination for a three day trip, but on May first, at about Ten O’clock, off they went! Three days and 30 minutes later, they pulled back into the parking lot, exhausted, broke, heavy-laden with gifts and souvenirs, and brimful of memories no one will forget. 26 • v UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS FINALLY BECOME V.I.P S Pres.—Kathy Lustfeldt, V.P.—Elena Smith, Treas.—Gale Rueck, Sec.—Donna Claypool J. They are shy, lost, quiet, and PERFECTLY DELIGHTFUL! Our freshman are unexcelled for enthusiasm, and they soon flood every team and organization in school. It is hard to go from being the big-shots of the Junior High to whipping boy of the high school but they always take the transition in stride. The babies of the school, the rank-and-file members of all organizations, the scrubs on all teams, but at the same time, the hope, the future, the life-blood of our school community. Each month from October thru May, the eagerly-awaited paper arrived. For nearly one day, the papers were evident throughout the school. “When will the next one arrive?” was a frequently heard question from student and teacher alike. We are proud of the Narghi News and hope we continue to get our eight pages of cheer each month as the years go by. 57 REST ASSURED I want to bite you on the neck! Five days of preparation-building of our spirit—convertibles convey the court around the gridiron—a smashing victory (sometimes) ends the most important game of the fall—finally, a lovely dance climaxed by the traditional crowning ceremony. 61 CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES 1972 62 There are many moments to remember as one grows up—but there are few if any to compare to the Junior-Senior prom, especially the one you attend as a senior. Your feet literally do not touch the ground. The decor; the clothes; the food; the music; the slow dances with that someone who’ll always be a little special, no matter who else comes along; the fun of the will and prophecy—all these and more make up the rosy memories which grow rosier as the years whirl by. In the county tournament, we beat Milford again, and lost the championship by three points in a hotly contested game. Our season climaxed during the regional tournament. The plucky Indians were given NO chance, but began to turn the tables when they beat Buckley-Loda. The Gilman five were supposed to beat us badly, but the final score was, Onarga-62, Gilman-58. There was no way that Onarga could beat Chatsworth, but when the final horn sounded, the score was Onarga—60 Chatsworth—57. In the sectional, Onarga led Danville Schlarman until the closing minutes. The final score was Onarga—55, Schlarman—62. J.V. BASKETBALL L. to R.—Coach Schaumburg, J. Kanosky, D. Schumers, T. Lcgan, B. Coffman, K. White, M. Harris, S. Fink, W. Malt-man, R. In 1972-73, the faculty women won their second game, and the faculty men broke a tie to become champions (at least temporarily). The proceeds from this annual event are divided between the Senior class (sponsor of the game) and the D. L. Reed Math Scholarship fund. 85 VERTISINGf TILSTRA MARATHON SERVICE AND GARAGE Goodyear Tires and Autolite Batteries Onarga, Illinois Route 45 and 54 FROBISH FOTO SERVICE Best Wishes to next years Freshman Class We don't make promises. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
