In Houston, they toured NASA and the Astro Dome. In Galveston, they saw SEA-A-RAMA. In New Orleans, they toured Bourbon Street, Preservation Hall, the French Quarter, and Court of the Two Sisters. They ate at BARSAD’S, a fabulous French Restaurant. Every day’s activities included swimming parties, sunbathing and lots of good food!! 19 “We’ve Only Just Begun” is the class motto for the Class of ’71. Amid yellow and white, the class colors, and yellow roses, the class flower, the seniors graduate. “Graduation’s Here”, a song arranged by Jim Jarrett, is sung by Olivia, Esther, and Sharon. The words are very timely. Twelve years of fun, work, study, fun, music, classes, fun, striving, jobs, meetings, and fun-all coming to an end. Now begins the college, military service, trade school, marriage,-life. Life away from shelter and protection of school, mom and dad, and teachers. Adulthood, so longed for, is now here, and a little feared. There are lots of misty eyes tonight-seniors, parents, even teachers sneak a dab at their eyes. Nothing is forever. AWARDS Louis Melind Award, S.A.R., American Legion Award. Co-Valedictorian, Girl Good Citizenship Award, Louis Melind Award, American Legion Award, D.A.R., Illinois State Scholar. Salutatorian 23 SENIORS HAVE A BUSY YEAR 24 The Class of 72 remained busy throughout the year. Their first project was to paint the concession stand and prepare it for football season. While waiting anxiously for the class rings to arrive, they occupied themselves with a White Elephant Sale and Bake Sale. The Junior’s hard work during Homecoming was well rewarded by the winning of first prize for their float. A Smorgasbord in February netted a good sized sum for their treasury. Last but not least was the long awaited Junior-Senior Prom for which the Juniors choose as their theme “Oriental Spring.” Juniors find new doors of opportunity . . . 27 Roger Ballard Tom Bayston L' Ree Benner Byron Blotcky Susan Bottorff Paula Brantley Don Conn Mike Conrad Cindy Cox Dot Dannehl Kathy Ficklin Rob Fink Tom Gagnon Charlene Gray Debbie Hamilton Donna Jordan As the Juniors prepare to fill the empty void left by the departing Class of’71, their attitudes and outlooks may undergo a change. A look forward to a senior year filled with hard work, college entrance worries, just plain worries, anxious moments, and that most important ingredient-fun, will make this year’s juniors take a second look at their first three years—maybe. This year, we co-sponsored a fall work day with the freshmen, and we made lots of money. In the late spring, we had a turkey supper. The food was good and we made some money too! We are looking forward to bigger and better accomplishments in the two years to come. Now, the class of ’73 is halfway finished—Two more wonderful terri-ble years, and we’ll all be glad sorry to see them end. Mixed emotions fill our hearts! Last year, we’re at the bottom of the first rung of the ladder. Now, we’ve successfully scaled the second one. Two to go-and they get easier all the time. Jill, Melissa, Darlene, and Neal were good officers, and we feel we’ll have able leaders next year too. Prom, and Senior trip—two major hills to climb, then we begin the really big climb—LIFE! Their openness and innocence was a model to the school. Each year, the “froshies” are so cute, so cooperative, so eager to please, so LOST for at least a week-and this year’s class was no exception. The freshman class officers were Kathy Lustfeldt, president; Elena Smith, vice-president; Donna Claypool, secretary; and Gale Rueck, treasurer. 34 Freshmen: ‘It’s great to be an Indian’ 35 Freshmen adjust to life at O.H.S. POTPOURRI 38 Completing his fourth year at the job of superintendent of the Onarga School district, Mr. Charles Watson has a distinguished record. He has seen Onarga through some very learn years, which, thanks in part to him, are coming to an end. Thanks to Mr. Watson for sticking with us and bringing about numerous improvements in four short years. Mr. Jack Campbell has tremendous patience, understanding, courage, and love of his fellow man. These are four absolute necessities for a man who plans to be a high school principal. In only two years, he has earned the friendship and respect of the students and teachers of OHS. We hope he’s here for a long time! 40 Unit secretary, unit paymaster, receptionist for the superintendent, mimeographer to nearly everybody, and mail sorter. Will the forementioned people stand up! There she is -Mrs. Lee. Mr. Campbell’s right hand gal and the No. 1 secretary at the grade school, Mrs. Ficklin wears two hats. Both are becoming, and she carries the load well. We can’t enumerate her duties here, but she’s very busy and very cheery at all times-well almost. As a departure from the usual homecoming celebration, this year the Student Council joined the National Honor Society in sponsoring “Spirit Week”, a week-long observance. On Monday, everyone wore red, white, and blue for “Patriotic Day.” Tuesday was “School Color Day”, and everyone wore Maroon and White. Wednesday found us in some rather far out costumes for “Hobo Day”. Thursday was “Dress-up Day”, and all did just that. Suits and ties, heels and hose were the uniform of the day. Friday found us in somber dress for “Mourning Day.” The building of floats was added to our traditional celebration for the first time in many years. The Junior Class entry was number one! The week was topped off by a 20-0 win over Chatsworth, and a beautiful dance. 51 The annual Homecoming Dance was held on October 10, 1970. This year the Student Council decided to try something new. Instead of hiring a dance band, they hired “The Brass Doorknobs,” a rock group. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Jack Warren and Olivia Lundberg as the 1970-71 King and Queen. The senior representatives were Sharon Middleton and Dave Siebert; juniors-Dot Dannehl and Roger Ballard; sophomore-Janet Alsip and John Bottorff;freshman-Donna Claypool and Dave Kanosky. ORIENTAL SPRING The Junior Class provided an excellent banquet and prom for the seniors at the Tri-K Restaurant on Friday, April 30. The Juniors chose “Oriental Spring” for their theme and red decorations were used. Debbie Hamilton, Junior Class president, gave the welcoming address and Senior Class president, Arnie Hassel-bring, gave the acceptance speech. After the dinner, the couples enjoyed and danced to the music of “Jo and the Boys”. The highlight of the evening came at 10:30 when the Senior Class Will and Prophecy were read by Esther Stephens and Olivia Lundberg. LITTLE WOMEN The choice for the ’71 Spring Play was “Little Women”. Being a mixture of drama, comedy, tragedy, and romance, this play has been acclaimed and enjoyed by many throughout the years. When acted out by the O.H.S. Drama Club, it received the same recognition. 56 CAST Jo Debbie Hamilton Prof. Bhaer Tom Gagnon Meg Sue Zick Girl No. 1 Anette Schjervheim Beth Connie Gibson Girl No. 2 Donna Claypool Amy Dot Dannehl Girl No. 3 Jeanie Gudeman Mrs. March Jeri Sims Girl No. 4 Kathy Brenner Hannah Donna Allen Prompters Nita Dannehl Aunt March Elena Smith Nancy Nichoalds Laurie Jeff Zick Student Director Darlene Reed John Brook Alan Sims Director Mrs. Frobish Mr. Laurence Bob Zirkle Front row: G. N A For the first time in many, many years, there has been a school newspaper. N printed, with pictures, and circulated on a monthly basis. Eight issues came o R forth, on time, and filled with worthwhile, well-written material. t The paper was well received, and Narghi News day was a big day each month. Everyone involved with this infant endeavor deserves a lot of credit. They, like w G the yearbook people, raise 95% of their own production money, compile the news, write it, paste it up, and then sell the paper when it comes out. The ’70-’71 Narghi News reached a high quality level for student publica- s H 1 tions, and they are planning to reach even higher levels next year. 58 ONARQUOIS STAFF Front row: A. Hasselbring, G. Onarga high school has done many excellent shows over the years. This year, the productions were “Everything Happens Us”, a comedy, and “Little Women”, a classical drama. Dave Siebert was the honored recipient of the Most Valuable Player award. The Most Valuable Back award was shared by Greg Kuipers and Jack Warren. Steve Kietzman was awarded the Most Valuable Lineman award. These boys, along with the remainder of the team chose as their captain J. R. Hollingsworth. 72 Defense comes on strong Kneeling: J.R. Thanks to the hard work and many hours spent by the Onarga School Booster Club, Onarga was able to enjoy football again this year. The Booster Club was well rewarded by the effort and drive the Indians fought with throughout the season, finishing with the title of V.V. Co-Champs. 73 CHEERLEADERS HELP TO KINDLE SCHOOL SPIRIT AT O.H.S. S. Middleton, S. Bottorff, D. Dannehl, P. Tremblay, N. Dannehl. Having lost many lettermen from 1970, the team began with a handicap, but the scrappy OHS five fought to an enviable position in the conference. 76 Throughout the years, Onara has consistently done well with basketball. One reason is the quality J.V. Teams we keep having. These teams are apprentices for the Varsity Team. If the spirit is high when these boys are freshmen and sophomores, it will be high when they are on the Varsity Team. Kneeling. 1. to r.: John Eversole.
