SENIOR CLASS As Nargee views the class of '52, he is well pleased with the results. On October 23, the Freshman initiation was held. It was a little different this year from what it usually is. It was held at night in the form of an all school party at the Grade School Gym. Everyone enjoyed it--even the Freshmen. When football and basketball seasons opened, it found the Seniors well represented in both sports. Seven of the boys were on the football varsity squad. Six of the first ten in basketball were also Seniors. During basketball season, the few Seniors who were notin basketball or band, worked in the new concession stand. May was our busiest month. First there was the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Then came Baccalaureate which was held in the Methodist Church on May 18. Then on the following Thursday, May 22, at 6;30 A. M., eighteen sleepy Seniors started for Kirkwood Lodge, Osage Beach, Missouri. They arrived late Thursday afternoon. After spending two glorious days swimming, riding, boating, etc. , the return trip was made Sunday, May 25. Mrs. and Mrs. Glenn Hall served as the sponsors and chaperons. On Tuesday, May 27, Mr. and Mrs. Bealer expressed their appreciation to the class in the form of a weiner roast which was held at Durham Park. Everyone ate all that they could hold, then retired to the gym to dance. On May 28, the Seniors reached the last milestone of their high school career with the Commencement ceremony. On May 29, the Alumni Banquet was held at the Methodist Church and the dance at the new gym. Then on May 30, several Seniors participated in their last Memorial Day parade as members of the O. H. S. Marching Band. Nargee has been watching the Junior Class and has found them hard at work throughout the year. During football season they had charge of the concession stands at Durham Park. When basketball season started, the Juniors again took over the concessions, this time in the new concession room in the lobby of the gymnasium. Almost all the Juniors could be found at the basketball games, for the concession stand required the assistance of all those who were not playing basketball, playing in the band, or leading cheers. Spring found the Juniors as busy as ever. They’ll never forget those midnight rehearsals for the Junior Play, The Little Dog Laughed . The high point of all Junior activity, the Junior-Senior Prom, came just two weeks after their play. The Juniors chose a garden scene as the theme for their prom and spent a busy two weeks preparing an awning, wishing well, bird bath, lawn furniture, and banquet tables. Nargee sees that the Sophomores, having survived the bitter trials of their Freshman year, have been an active and confident class. They seem to have overcome their shyness as Freshmen to become wise Sophomores. These Sophomores are certainly doing their share of studying! They can be seen pondering over their Latin verbs; carefully composing themes and poems for English; being momentarily stumped by an algebra equation; or cramming for one of those biology tests. Even though they study hard, they find time to take an active part in many of the activities atO. H. S. These activities, including choruses, Onarquois Staff, G. A. A., F. F. A., F. H. A., and National Honor Society have many eager Sophomores on their membership lists. The class of 54 has made a fine record this year and all its members are looking forward to the joys of being juniors next year. They were informally initiated into the high school by the Seniors on October 23, at an all school party. Following this a cordial welcome into school was given them by the Sophomores in the way of a Freshmen-Sophomore Reception. The Freshmen, although the youngest group, were well represented in football, basketball, chorus, band, and many of the other organizations as well. The pep rally, snake dance, queen contest football game, and dance highlighted the homecoming. The council also had charge of the assembly programs for the year. It assumed responsibility for the concessions at the Vermillion Valley and Regional Basketball tournaments which were in our new gymnasium. Two all-school parties were sponsored by the student council. One party was held at the country club to celebrate the football team’s victory over Cullom. On May 17, the council sponsored a hard times party called the Korn Bawl Jamboree. Herbert Becker and Rebecca Cultra represented the council at the State Convention of Student Councils held in Peoria. Through discussion groups, lectures, and associations with other students from all over the state, they were able to learn many things which will make the Onarga High School a better school. The capable officers of this year’s student council were: President. William Palmer- Vice President, Herbert Becker; Secretary-, Mary Lee Lindsay; Treasurer, Donna Hall. MARCHING The band has been very busy this year. It all began with football season. The band presented half-time shows for the four home football games, which included such stunts as: a ticking clock that revolved, and a tepee formation with Chief Herbert Becker doing a very realistic war-dance. For the final game the band depicted the four seasons of the year. A school bus with rotating wheels represented the opening of school and fall. A Christmas tree with colored lights was formed for winter. Showers were anticipated for spring so what could be more enjoyable than a circus! Jack Jenes was the strong man with Herbert Becker as the circus clown. Basketball season began and the concert band members contributed to the season by playing at half-times and between the games. Special appearances were made at the Amateur Antics. Commencement, Memorial Day, the Princess Onarga Festival, and on May 12 the band played host to the County Band Festival!
