All of the people shown on this page worked on com- piling this issue of the OMS '58 Parade. Woody remained here for nearly a week working mainly on copy. Zander returned and completed soliciting ads and his copy. Fosteris cartoons came a few days after school all fine and well done, this was a complete job. The Birgerson brothers put in two full days and accomplished a lot of work. Friday and Saturday it was near one a.m. when Biff and Alex', quit. Flannery brought down some snap- shots sorely needed. Chailland took pictures during the year, but most of those are not here. The Misses Eshleman and Booth helped with some of the art work and check- ing. Johnson added several days of typing and pasting up montages. The material is now complete this day of the 6th of june 1958-Now one more complete . mm .... --, D011 He d . Guardians The position of an Onarga Guardian is one of the most respected in the entire school. This is because the requirements of a Guardian are so high. Only twelve are made each semester and to qualify, a cadet must be one of the top twelve out of the school in points earned. Points are determined by scholastic, athletic, and military accomplishments in effort, performance, attendance, etc. Extra-curricular activities and conduct also play an important part. Once being a Guardian, a cadet is privileged to wear the attractive purple and gold cord on his left shoulder. The number of strands indicate times won and a gold strand indicates the fifth cord won. The record number of cords won by any cadet is eight, won by Merrill Birgerson. P.S. The N.A.S.S. is a nation-wide organization and is therefore governed by uniform rules throughout the country. To qualify for the society, one must have earned a major letter or two minor letters and must have kept an average above the schoolis medium for a period of three consecutive semesters. He must also demonstrate to his superiors the qualities of a good citizen and a good Sportsman. i301 tudent Council STANDING-Thurbee CSophomcreD, Dave Suzuki lFreshmanJ, Hoyer Uuniorl, Bourk C Seniorj, Dave Ross Uuniorj, Tull CSophornoreJ, Lake Uuniorl. SCHOOL CLASS HISTORY The class of '58 has left its marks and memories here at OMS. It is a mark that was accomplished by seven years of building and hard work, and one that will be hard to surpass for years to come. The class was outstanding not only in one field, but in all fields. The ,58 class began way back in the fall of ,51, when Kepner, who turned out to be one of our biggest classmates, entered OMS as a sixth grader from Manteno, Ill. The fall of '52 found one more, to go all the way with Kepner to the end, and that was Don Hendricks, who came to us from Gary, Indiana. Slowly but surely the class of ,58 began to build for in the fall of ,53 Wally and Don were joined by Bob Greco from Elmwood Park, Ill. Even at this early stage we began to show our athletic strength as a class. Wally and Bob showed great talent in basketball while Don made the rilie team. Also all three cadets showed possibilities in football and track. Six entered our class as freshmen, as we grew in leaps and bounds. Entering OMS as freshmen were: William Hudson, Bradley, Don Gordon, Chi- cago, Carlos Sucharetza, Chicago, Ralph Woody, St. Louis, Merrill Birgerson, Granville, and Alan Bourk, Momence. The class showed early leader- ship, since one had been in school for three years, another for two, and now three of the new class- mates came from junior military schools. Richard Kirby of Spring Valley, Dillard Lasses- ter of Athens, Whitney Zander of Aurora, and Har- vey Wilcox of Chicago, joined us our sophomore year. Besides batting our way through school work, we managed to win 16 varsity letters among our- selves in all the school sports. We also had four boys on the N.A.S.S., five in the OMS club, seven in the band, and one bugler. We also got our Iirst stripes at Christmas time, and what happy moments these were. This was the showing of an outstanding class. The junior year, our second to the last step at OMS, found us still growing in number, for four , lll I :gg 21: ll l 1 V l lll l l' w LOYALTY more who joined the class, helping and striving to make it even greater, were Gary Chailland, Flint, Mich., Douglas Foster, Shreveport, Louisiana, Paul Ross, Utica, who turned out to be our biggest classmate, and Fred Zoes, Chicago. This year led us to more difficult work, but still there was time for our first calling passes and the girls up town. We helped make up the football, basketball, track, riiie, and swimming teams. We had the greatest number in scholarship, merit and guardians, OMS club, drill finalists, literary and music contests, and Crack Company. As the year passed, we gained more and more responsibility, and soon 'vve found ourselves headed for the last stepping stone and our most glorious year . . . our senior year. Our class doors closed with the last two addi- tions, in the fall our senior year. Rex Maples and Gene Smith joined us, which made our final standing of nineteen senior cadets. We worked hard our last year, leading the battalion in military as well as in other activities as we had done in the past. We take with us as we leave the school some of the best athletes and scholars in many a year. The members of the class of ,58 hold these distinc- tions, along with many others. Yes, we have left our marks here, now we are leaving with Major Stienecker's speech and warm hand-shake, in awarding our diplomas, our eyes lilled with tears. We will be back in time, to remi- nisce over our parties, our dances, and to hear some of Major's tall tales of when he was a boy, as well, to see if our marks have been surpassed and our memories have been forgotten. I doubt if they will have. Don Hendricks I , Do It Right Kzrbs Canning Tower of D0 1 Have 72 for class of 58,' To Knob You? Honors and Awards GENERAL ORDERS No. 16-1957-58 1.
