Their guidance enabled us to make decisions independently, solve our own problems and learn from our mistakes. We sincerely appreciate their understanding and hope that we may enrich the lives of those we meet, as they have enriched ours. “76” Annual Staff 4 We, the Senior Class of 1976, would like to especially recognize Mr. Louis Justis, a former teacher at Onancock High School. The most important gift a teacher can give to his students is the love he has for the subject he teaches. Mr. Justis more than met this special qualification. The tidbits of personal information on historical figures he brought out in class certainly made World History interesting! With respect and deep affection, we make this special dedication to him. “76” Annual Staff — 5 ONANCOCK HIGH You must, I am sure, be aware that the last four years have been very special ones in your life. It is here that you have left the record that will deter¬ mine what you can do and where you can go throughout the rest of your career. I sincerely hope that the years you have spent here have been happy years and that they have been filled with meaning and accomplishment. Now your life stretches before you and it is my sincere wish that it will be one filled with joy and happiness. Earl G. Hoppes, Principal ADMINISTRATION I sincerely believe that this Senior class of 1976 is a fine group of young people. I hope that the promising future which seems to be yours will be realized and that each and every one of you lives up to his or her fullest potential. May you approach life with a good attitude and may success greet each and every one of you. Dennis Custis, Assistant Principal It is with mixed emotions that I have to say farewell to you because we started on this venturesome journey together; you as eager hopeful students and I, as an assis¬ tant administrator of the Onancock High School. You, I con¬ sider my class. Because of the excellent instruction of your teachers, we have watched you develop and mature into a group of fine individuals. As you depart from us, remember that you are a part of a great nation and it is your duty to become as highly educated as your capabilities will allow because education is now the supreme problem of all nations and if we are not educated our nation will slowly perish. You must develop a philosophy of life and inculcate the idea that life does not include only duties and sacrifices but also little things that are of paramount importance. We are more secure when we are kind, take care of obligations, share our bounty, have great integrity and always have a cheery smile. Education makes a person easy to lead, but difficult to drive, easy to govern, but impossible to enslave. I wish you all the success possible. James E. In general, as far as we know, all of our classmates are in good health - at least physically. Many of our classmates have achieved far above average success. James Johnson has grown 2 feet and is now a center for the Los Angeles Lakers. Susan Ewell is now a household name after winning 9 Olympic gold medals (playing as a one man softball team); Tami Griffin was a jockey in the last Kentucky Derby. Juanita Ames has achieved world-wide success for her part in the founding of the first Woman’s Professional Boxing Circuit. Elsie Bagwell is the fat lady with the Barnum Bailey Circus. And who could forget that Annette Simpkins, Gwen Davis, and Alvin Pettit broke the Guinness World Record for gum chewing, and are now known as Snap, Crackle, and Pop! The class of 76 boasts two teachers: Debbie Kay - a sought after professor in How To Ask Questions, and Michael Bagwell - the new OHS typing teacher. We also have a number of business tycoons. Wendy Parker owns a cigarette factory and never has to borrow anymore. Sueann Pruitt is owner of the illustrious Beauty Salon chain. Ann Matthews is the owner of the Sew Your Own Shirt Factory. Charlotte Williams has opened her own Jolly Williams Amusement Park in the growing resort area of Deep Creek. Barbara Johnson is owner of Peanut Chew Incorporated. Mitzi Collins has sure had her ups and downs - she fell off her shoes five years ago and is still trying to climb back up. Rosemary Brown is still trying to decide what she is going to be when she grows up. Teresa Davis has been engaged and disengaged so many times, she has started a ring outlet store. Our own Roger Chandler is still hopping along. As you know, glamour has always been foremost among our classes priorities and many of our classmates have sustained this. Lynne Taylor is now a “Fly Me” girl with Fun and Sun Airlines. Brenda Parker is a fashion consultant for Cher. Patricia Wright has joined the Pointer Sisters. Karen Bennett and Jackie Hamilton are models for the Mark Eden Company. Rose Chandler has become the first black twiggy. Beth Haynes is now a designer for Popular Mechanics magazine. Eddie Holloway has been screen-tested for the lead in Kojak 2. Starr Thompson is a “star” in her own kitchen, married with five children. Ray Thompson (now known as Evil Ray) will attempt to jump Onancock Creek with his new super-cycle. Many of our classmates have stayed on the Shore and added to its growth. Edgar Allen is now mayor of Tasley. Leroy Baumgardner and Pete Taylor are the town cops of Onancock. Sheila Morris is a taxi driver at 4- Corner-Plaza. Steve Turlington has moved up to general manager of Radio Electronics. Robert Holloway is bringing the crew-cut back as proprietor of his own barber shop. Sadie Tyler is the bouncer at Buster Redd’s night club. Linda Smith has become the Shore’s own poet laureat. Jill Brinkley and Debbie Matthews are hap¬ pily married with cumulative children numbering 15 (busy ladies). Lee Lewis is a therapist for people with lock¬ jaw. Marty Bennett has joined her in the medical profession, and is busy helping the stork. Steve Daley is busy building boats - some of them even float. Whitney Hardstock is the fearless commander-in-chief of the Onan¬ cock National Guard. Kevin Bagwell is a well-known car salesman for Rambler Motor Company. Timmy Brown is general manager of Brown Brothers Garage. Mike Arvay is well launched upon his career of selling penny loafers. Our class was always different and unusual in many ways, and as you can see we have sustained this in our chosen professions. Our best wishes for good health. Sincerely, Spirit of 76 Jennie Davis (class correspondent) 35 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We the Senior Class of Onancock High School of 1976, being of sound mind, memory and understanding, so hereby declare this our last will and testament, revoking all previous wills heretofore made by us. TOPPIN oo EDITOR’S NOTE With all of my endeavors this year in preparing the yearbook, it has been through our togetherness that we have reached our goal. The staff has put forth its utmost effort to make this a successful yearbook. It took a lot of time, hard work, positive attitude and most of all patience. The staff and I are most appreciative for the full cooperation from the students and faculty during the year. With our patience and your motivation, we have tried to put together an outstan¬ ding yearbook for the year of 1976, one that we may be proud of. I would like to express my appreciation for the hard work on the part of the staff. My greatest thanks go to Marion Summerville, Susie Jones, Carter Pruitt, Wayne Parks, Betty Jubilee, Ivonnia Drummond and Gwen Parker. Without them, this year¬ book could not b e a memorable success. I also wish to thank Mrs. Moon and Mr. Hart, our advisors, for their patience and most of all, advice. We hope that no matter when you look through this edition of the Trident, it will br¬ ing back memories of school days. Sylvia Nock Editor 101 Are you saying I did it, Mr. Bailey?
