SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It ' s June, 1964, and soon O.H.S. ' s beloved Seniors will be saying fond good-byes to the Old Alma Mater. As memories flood back to mind, we are lost in a whirl of reminiscence. Let ' s retrace the steps of these mature, august scholars, say four years ago. In the fall of 1960, Onancock High School opened its doors to receive one of the rowdiest and most talkative classes in its history. Our two homeroom teachers, Miss Poarch and Mr. Carey, put into motion the wheels of education in the minds of us bewildered Freshmen. We selected our first class officers-- President, Jack Phillips; Vice-President, Hal Lassiter; Secretary-Treasurer, Jo Ann Van Kesteren; and Reporter, Jo Ann Edwards. Jo Ann Van Kesteren was selected as cheerleader. An envied few attended the Athletic Ball. This year Mrs. Wood took Robin Milliner, Hal Lassiter, and Kim Miles to the Latin tournament in Norfolk. After a superb summer vacation, we returned to the Ivy Halls of learning with Mr. Carey and Miss Poarch directing this group of wise fools. As Sophomore officers we elected--President, Maxine Tur¬ lington; Vice-President, Danny Payne; Secretary, Jo Ann Edwards; Treasurer, Carolyn Sites. Nadya Crosley, Faith Richardson and Carolyn Sites joined us as Brenda Byrd and Bill Harrison left to attend other schools. Karen Knopf, Robin Milliner, and Jo Ann Edwards were chosen cheerleaders. Girls joined the Tri-hi-y and many became new members of the Beta Club. It was September, 1962, and as Jolly Juniors we anticipated one of the best years yet. Mrs. Marie Pennewell and Mrs. Nancy Senn took over as homeroom teachers. Kim Miles was selected to serve as Junior Editor on the annual staff. Faith Richardson was elected Class President; Vice-President, Kim Miles; Secretary, Karen Knopf; and Treasurer, Jean Lavelle. Many Juniors assisted in the publication of the Parchment, the O.H.S. newspaper. Just before Thanksgiving our cherished class rings arrived. On a wintry night in March our Junior play, Boarding House Reach, was presented and was proclaimed a smashing success. Beta Club members attended a spring convention in Richmond. On May 18, Swinging in the Spring was presented and was unanimously called the most fabulous Prom ever at Onancock High School. Shortly afterwards, we lost Dorothy Johnson, Judy Baggett, and Sylvia Johnson to the cause of matrimony. We thus closed the door on another wonderful year. We entered high school a bit more sophisticated in September, under the guidance of Mrs. Penne¬ well and Mrs. Senn. For the last year we elected George Parker, Class President; Maxine Turlington, Vice-President; Jo Ann Edwards, Secretary; and Bill Valentine, Treasurer. The ordering of name cards, invitations, and thank-you notes impressed graduation on our minds. This year Chris Bosw orth, Rose Ann Niedlinger, and Ronnie Dobson joined our class. Preparing the annual, the Trident, took up the main portion of the year. Seniors attended their last Athletic Ball, saying a farewell to their high school sports careers. Our Senior play, You ' ll Die Laughing, was presented under the direction of Mr. Robert Budd. After the beautiful prom given by the Juniors, the arrival of caps and gowns, and exams, gradu¬ ation signaled the end of the best years of our lives. To the entire faculty, who have shown us patience and understanding, we are grateful and appreci¬ ative. To our high school friends we leave echoes of our laughter and the fond memories of our school days together. In 1952 this shy and unlearned group was blinded by the tasks ahead of them; in 1964, twelve years later, we are indeed blinded by the unknown path to the future. Jo Ann Edwards Historian 27
