Staff 3. SCENE OF SILLY SENIORS 26 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It ' s June, 1964, and soon O.H.S. ' s beloved Seniors will be saying fond good-byes to the Old Alma Mater. As memories flood back to mind, we are lost in a whirl of reminiscence. Let ' s retrace the steps of these mature, august scholars, say four years ago. In the fall of 1960, Onancock High School opened its doors to receive one of the rowdiest and most talkative classes in its history. Our two homeroom teachers, Miss Poarch and Mr. Carey, put into motion the wheels of education in the minds of us bewildered Freshmen. We selected our first class officers-- President, Jack Phillips; Vice-President, Hal Lassiter; Secretary-Treasurer, Jo Ann Van Kesteren; and Reporter, Jo Ann Edwards. Jo Ann Van Kesteren was selected as cheerleader. An envied few attended the Athletic Ball. This year Mrs. Wood took Robin Milliner, Hal Lassiter, and Kim Miles to the Latin tournament in Norfolk. After a superb summer vacation, we returned to the Ivy Halls of learning with Mr. Carey and Miss Poarch directing this group of wise fools. As Sophomore officers we elected--President, Maxine Tur¬ lington; Vice-President, Danny Payne; Secretary, Jo Ann Edwards; Treasurer, Carolyn Sites. Nadya Crosley, Faith Richardson and Carolyn Sites joined us as Brenda Byrd and Bill Harrison left to attend other schools. Karen Knopf, Robin Milliner, and Jo Ann Edwards were chosen cheerleaders. Girls joined the Tri-hi-y and many became new members of the Beta Club. It was September, 1962, and as Jolly Juniors we anticipated one of the best years yet. Mrs. Marie Pennewell and Mrs. Nancy Senn took over as homeroom teachers. Kim Miles was selected to serve as Junior Editor on the annual staff. Faith Richardson was elected Class President; Vice-President, Kim Miles; Secretary, Karen Knopf; and Treasurer, Jean Lavelle. Many Juniors assisted in the publication of the Parchment, the O.H.S. newspaper. Just before Thanksgiving our cherished class rings arrived. On a wintry night in March our Junior play, Boarding House Reach, was presented and was proclaimed a smashing success. Beta Club members attended a spring convention in Richmond. On May 18, Swinging in the Spring was presented and was unanimously called the most fabulous Prom ever at Onancock High School. Shortly afterwards, we lost Dorothy Johnson, Judy Baggett, and Sylvia Johnson to the cause of matrimony. We thus closed the door on another wonderful year. We entered high school a bit more sophisticated in September, under the guidance of Mrs. Penne¬ well and Mrs. Senn. For the last year we elected George Parker, Class President; Maxine Turlington, Vice-President; Jo Ann Edwards, Secretary; and Bill Valentine, Treasurer. The ordering of name cards, invitations, and thank-you notes impressed graduation on our minds. This year Chris Bosw orth, Rose Ann Niedlinger, and Ronnie Dobson joined our class. Preparing the annual, the Trident, took up the main portion of the year. Seniors attended their last Athletic Ball, saying a farewell to their high school sports careers. Our Senior play, You ' ll Die Laughing, was presented under the direction of Mr. Robert Budd. After the beautiful prom given by the Juniors, the arrival of caps and gowns, and exams, gradu¬ ation signaled the end of the best years of our lives. To the entire faculty, who have shown us patience and understanding, we are grateful and appreci¬ ative. To our high school friends we leave echoes of our laughter and the fond memories of our school days together. In 1952 this shy and unlearned group was blinded by the tasks ahead of them; in 1964, twelve years later, we are indeed blinded by the unknown path to the future. MOST ORIGINAL Tress, Preston CLASS PROPHECY June 1974 Dear Mrs. Pennewell and Mrs. Senn, It hardly seems possible that ten years have passed since the class of 1964 was together at O.H.S. I, being a house mother at Vassar College, am chaperoning a group of girls to Fort Lauderdale for spring vacation, when who should I run into at the Daytona Beach Raceway, but Arnold Obenshain. He has just won his fourth 500 and now is tied with that other speedster Gary Marsh. As I was on my way to dinner, I happened to meet another classmate Robin Milliner, who is a math professor at the University of Miami and is here on a vacation also. She said she had seen Jack Phillips recently, who is catcher for the Yankees. He is here for training. The famous Saturday Club, headed by Tommy Belote, has spread throughout the U. S. very rapidly. The members Hal Lassiter, Gary Marsh, Bill Shrieves, John Wimbrow, Eddie Belote, Bill Valentine, Eddie Lavelle, and Preston Mears have done a marvelous job in promoting the stand¬ ards to become a member. Danny Payne, once a basketball player for Onancock, has joined the Globetrotters. Jean Lavelle, who loved physics so well, is Pro fessor of Physics at William and Mary. Mary Paul Scott, Nancy Ayres, Nadya Crosley, and Connie Williams are living in New York City and are operating their own beauty salon. Some of the main cosmetics in their salon are being created by Tress Engler. Sonny Shrieves and Lanny Mason have just opened another used car lot. This one is located in Baltimore near Jack Lavelle’s Rambler Specialty Shop. I heard Margaret Ann Watkinson is helping Mrs. Taylor coach the Atlantic basketball team. I hope she likes them better now than before. Kim Miles is star quarterback for the Giants. If you watch T.V., you will see that same number 12. Karen Knopf, who is now co-owner of Floyd Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, is also Vice-President of the Corvett Industry. I got a letter the other day from Faith Richardson, who is the chief doctor and missionary to the Ubangie Tribe in Africa. Albert Barber has just completed his second edition of How to Spell , and Chris Bosworth has just started writing pamphlets on How to Do Good on College Boards. Rose Ann Niedlinger bought out Cliff Marsh and opened her own jewelry store in Onancock. Bobby Gene Moore has become a chief horticulturist for a flower firm in London, and Betty Elliot is also there as medical advisor to Queen Elizabeth. Rosalie Drewer has gained 180 pounds and now travels all over the world as the fat lady for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. George Parker is now racing Ferraries on the Grand Prix Circuit. He will be racing in Monte-Carlo next week. Rudy Smith and Donna Morgan are chief executives for General Electric in New Jersey. Barry Courtney and Jo Ann Edwards are co-owners of Crabs Unlimited Inc. inChesconnessex, Virginia. Bill Valentine, better known as Billy the Bomber, has just lost his license for the third time and is getting ready to serve his second sentence in Sing-Sing for finally succeeding in blowing up the Tasley Fair Grounds. Damon Evans has invented get tall pills and is now 7 ft., and Betty Jean Nottingham has invented Betty’s Reducing Pills and now weighs 110 pounds. Donna Harmon is working in California for Walt Disney drawing Donald Duck cartoons. Peggy Savage, Carol Ann Twyford, and Carolyn Sites are secretaries to the Ambassador to New Zealand. Sharon Reade and Glenda Custis are now head nurses on the Ben Casey Show. 30 Judy Guy, Linda Mae Justis, Veronica Justice, and Joyce Metcalf are happily married and are all still living on the Eastern Shore. I saw an advertisement in the paper the other day for special pine wood cabinets made by Ronnie Dobson. I also heard that Linda Carol Justis has opened a restuarant across the road from Forks Grill, where we always went for a snack after school. Jack Bonniwell is a jet pilot in the Air Force and is stationed in Japan. Gary Ewell has become President of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. Maxine Turlington and Tommy Williams have built a new William’s Funeral Home to re¬ place the old one. Joyce Barnes is knitting sweaters for the Pandora Company. If you like to hunt, Ronnie Justis will be glad to be your guide on an African Safari. I hope I will be able to write more often during the next ten years and give you more news about the Seniors of ’64. Sincerely, Jo Ann Van Kesteren Bill Valentine LAST WILL We, the Senior Class of Onancock High School of 1964, being of sound mind, now write and declare this our last will and testament, hereby revoking all previous heretofore made by us.
