Pressing the time machine button to project us backward we stand as fifty-six bewildered Freshman about to enter the portals of high school. Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Pennewell had the task of being our home room teachers. We proudly went about the job of electing class officers: President, James A. Rew; Vice-President, Johnny Rogers; Secretary, Paul White; Treasurer, Margaret Mapp; Reporter, Henry Custis. We Freshmen soon discovered that we had many fine athletes as football, basketball, track, and baseball rolled around. Val East and Penny Byrd were chosen as cheerleaders. Many of our classmates attended their first Athletic Ball. We also began to earn money. This year Mrs. Wood took Linda Kilmon and Kitty Nock to the Latin tourna¬ ment in Norfolk. As the sociable Sophomores we came back to school after a wonderful summer, again under the guidance of Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Pennewell. We elected the following officers--President, Dianne Kiilmon; Vice- President, Barbara Fitchett; Secretary, Linda Kilmon; Treasurer, Clara Jacob; and Reporter, Darlene Harmon. This year the girls had the pleasure of joining the Tri-Hi-Y and a few became members of the newly formed Beta Club. Again this year some of the Latin students journeyed to the Tournament, they were Johnny Ro¬ gers, Linda Kilmon, and Kitty Nock. The Jolly Juniors, now in the hands of Mrs. Booth and Mr. Fisher, in a rush of enthusiasm elected Darlene Harmon as President, Bobby Taylor as Vice-President, Jerry Long as Secretary, and Barbara Fitchett as Treas¬ urer. Johnny Rogers was selected as Junior editor for the annual. We then anticipated the arrival of our class rings while we welcomed Virginia Valentine and John Eddie Churn into our group. Money--our biggest worry--was brought in by the sale of cards, stationery, and candy. The Beta Club members attended the Beta Convention in Roanoke and some of the Juniors on the PARCHMENT staff went to SIPA in Lexington. Then the great nig ht came! Serenade in Jade, our Junior-Senior Prom was presented on May 18th to the tune of Chick Chicone and his orchestra. The night glittered and sparkled with the promise of dreams come true. Forty-seven Seniors, who weren ' t believing this, entered school on September 5 under the rein of Mrs. Booth and Mr. Fisher again for this last year of youth. Bobby Taylor served as President, Linda Kilmon as Vice-President, Max Eller as Secretary, and Johnny Rogers as Treasurer. Co-editors of the BEACON and the PARCHMENT, respectively, were Johnny Rogers and Barbara Fitchett and Curtis Badger and Pam Melson. We welcomed Nancy Livesay and Brenda Key into our class. On December 14 we presented CAMPUS QUARAN¬ TINE directed by Mr. A.K. Fisher. Then followed the filling out of many applications for college, business school and jobs. Barbara Fitchett, as maid of honor, represented us in the Tenth Annual Azalea Festival at Norfol k, Virginia. Just around the corner was the beautiful prom, given in our honor by the Juniors, and then graduation. Today, June 5, 1963, is our graduation day and though we shall part now--for some will marry as Nancy Belote, Donna Pruitt, Linda McCloud, and Joe Wescott have; some go to college or business school and some to work--I hope that we will always remain friends and cherish our many wonderful memories. We leave you this poem from THE SANSKRIT for graduation day. LOOK TO THIS DAY Look to this day. For it is the very life of life, In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existance: The glory of action, The bliss of growth, The splendor of beauty, For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision; But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day 30 Pam Melson Historian JUNIOR OFFICERS HISTOR Y Once again the doors of O.H.S. were flung open for a new year to receive us eager Juniors. Our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Marie Pennewell and Mrs. Nancy Senn. Within the first week our cherished class rings were ordered, class officers elected, and pictures taken. During the next few weeks various ways of making money were sought. We decided to sell candy and Christmas cards. Now the year was in full swing, and it seemed to pass very rapidly. At the close of mid-terms our play had suddenly crept up on us, and a lot of hard work and rehearsals were in store for us. After the play, weeks of planning were devoted to our long-awaited prom. We all considered it the most beautiful of all, and it will always linger in our minds as one of the most outstanding events of our high school years. Next came the final exams and with them the close of another year. Like most, we are glad to see it end but are looking forward to our last year as Seniors. Mr. Carey and Mrs. Kellam were given the dubious honor of serving as our home-room teachers. We welcomed Jeannine Fonda and Martha Russell to our class. During the first week, we elected officers for our class. In addition to the four officers shown a- bove, Eddie Justis was selected to be our class reporter. The Sophomore class was represented on the Student Council by Trudy Davis and Francis Hart. Not long after that, three cheerleaders were chosen from our class for the coming football season. They were Joan Twyford, Meg Steele, and Mary Catherine Taylor. Many of our boys participated in and played an important part on the football team. Soon after, basketball practice started, and many Sophomores made important contributions to the basketball teams. During the year, many of our girls joined the F.H.A. and Tri-Hi-Y movements. Among our money¬ making projects were dances and the sale of cookies, both of which were highly successful. After our Christmas vacation, the big attraction was the Athletic Ball. The lucky few who attended came away with fond memories of a wonderful time. With the coming of s P rin g baseball and softball seasons took the limelight. Finally the end of another school year was drawing near. This had been a happy and exciting year but just the begin¬ ning of happiness and excitement, for next year will be a hectic and very rewarding year in which we will receive our class ring, stage our first play, and the Junior-Senior Prom. We were glad to welcome Walter Marks as a new classmate. Jo Anne Chambers and Nancy Adkins were chosen to be our representatives on the Student Council. Next, we entered athletics with enthusiasm. Sammie Miles was chosen to be the cheerleader from the Freshman Class. Our boys played a big part on the J.V. and Varsity football teams. After a lively football season, we centered our attention on basketball. Bonnie Godwin, Jo Anne Chambers, Jonne Ruth Watkinson, and Sammie Miles represented the Freshmen on the girl ' s team. Soon after the bas¬ ketball season, we began practicing for our softball and baseball try-outs. Many of our girls joined the F.H.A. for the first time, with Nancy Adkins and Jo Anne Chambers elected songleaders of the Onancock Chapter. We have enjoyed this year, filled with both good times and hard work. It has passed quickly and we eagerly look forward to our SOPHOMORE year.
