Forty-one Seniors are chattering all at once in anticipation of one of the greatest nights of our lives. Suddenly the expectant murmur of conversation is hushed and silence prevails. Tassels are swung into place, caps are given that last-minute adjustment, and the program is underway. The faculty, dignified and distinguished in their hoods and gowns, begin the procession. Through eyes blurred by tears of joy and sadness, we sight Mom and Dad, beaming proudly as we take our places on stage. The strains of Pomp and Circumstance fade in the distance, memories flood back to mind, and we are lost in a whirl of reminiscence. We recall those trying days in die eighth grade when all sixty-five of us were first brought together as a class. Mrs. Winifred Belote and Mrs. Aileen Phillips guide us through the first bewildering moments as our home room teachers, but are tempted to end their teaching career in the proc¬ ess. Our girls, thrilled at the opportunity to join their first high school organization, become Future Homemakers of America; and the boys, with an air of superiority, take part in Junior Varsity athletic activities. Still green but growing, we end this year with a class picnic. Now we find ourselves as Freshmen, really a part of high school, and with drivers ' license, and the privilege of dating, we think we ' re in a position to be envied, for sure. But the old saying, all that glitters isn ' t gold, proves to be true when we are faced with more complex schedules and such unfamiliar subjects as Latin an d (don ' t mention it) Algebra. Un¬ der the direction of Mrs. Lotta Booth and Mrs. Betty Dunton, we finally settle down and select our first class officers - President, Kitty Grey; Vice-President, Jackie Harris; Secretary, Buster Rew; and Treasurer, Da¬ vid King. L. T. Lilliston has left us this year and gone to R. M. A., but we welcome Peggy Kemp to our class. Our boys are playing Varsity football, basketball, and baseball, and the girls are displaying their ath¬ letic abilities on the basketball and softball teams. Another first comes when we don our tux, formals, and proudest smiles to attend the Athletic Ball. Without realizing it, winter turns to summer and our Freshmen year disappears. After a superb summer vacation, we return to these halls of learning as Sophomores with Mrs. Booth and Mrs. Dunton still striving to keep their sanity as homeroom teachers of this group of fifty-one wise fools. Lewis Belote leaves us to continue his education at Randolph-Macon Acad¬ emy; Peggy Kemp marries; and Donna Rae Beasley, Pat Murphy, and Rebecca Yow move away and attend other schools. The first really big event to acclaim the interest and attention of our girls is, of course, cheer leader tryouts. Kitty Grey, Mary Frances Mears, and Joy Prier are chosen to represent the Sophomores. Next comes our first class meeting and the selection of officers as follows: President, Tommy Miles; Vice-President, Jerry Kappes; Secretary, Billie Lang; Treasurer, Dale Milliner; and Re- porter, Jackie Watson. Having the privilege of becoming Tri-Hi-Y mem¬ bers, many of our girls join this organization and, as a result, Joye Prier is selected as a representative to the Model General Assembly. We expend much of our energy in an attempt to fatten our treasury by holding bakes, dances, etc. Having made many marvelous memories, another year is complete. September 1959, and here we are as Jolly Juniors , tingling with ex¬ citement and anticipation, for this is to be one of the biggest and best years yet. Mrs. Booth, still with us, and Mr. Arthur K. Fisher, who has taken over our high school English department, are our homeroom teachers and advisors. Billie Lang joins the ranks of the cheerleaders, and football season captures the spotlight. The Voice of the Campus , the Onancock High School newspaper, is passed down to us as Juniors, and Kay Drummond and Riley Bull as Co-Editors, along with an energetic and efficient news staff turn it into a priceless publication. Kitty Grey is selected to serve as Junior Editor on the staff of the Beacon , and Mary Frances Mears is elect¬ ed Class President with Vice-President, John Lambdin; Secretary, Kay Drummond; Treasurer, Jackie Watson; and Reporter, Linda Watkinson as able assistants. Having lost Bonnie Watkinson to the cause of matrimony, Mary Jo Matthews to a school of Cosmetology, and Jackie Edwards and Ronnie Watkinson to Deleware high schools, we have only forty-four Jun¬ iors. Just before Thanksgiving our class rings arrive to signify that we will soon be O. H. S. alumni. This year the Thanksgiving football game is played at Central and upon our victory of 26-0 the goal post is brought home with us and autographed by all our football fans. On a snowy night in March, our Junior Play Crazy But Cute is presented and turns out to be exactly that. Two of the Junior lassies, Alice Formyduval and Kay Drummond, are sent to the Model General Assembly in Richmond and seem to experience the weekend of their lives. All during the year we have been selling stationary, Christmas Cards, candy, holding bakes, and dances, and making all kinds of money for only one purpose, the Prom. On April 29, Lilac Lane is presented and we unanimously decide that it is the most fabulous and fascinating Prom O. H. S. has ever witnessed. Following the Prom a beach party is held at Crystal Beach beneath sky splashed with stars and a full moon. Some of the night ' s romanticism takes effect, and shortly afterwards, diamonds begin to sparkle and during the summer months, it seems that those Wedding Bells are breaking up that ole ' gang of mine. The Juniors sing at Baccalaureate Service and close the door on another fantabulous year. It seems like only yesterday when forty-one of us returned to Q. H. S. as Sophisticated (well, almost) Seniors. Mrs. Booth and Mr. Fisher are our homeroom teachers for the last time and our final class officers are chosen - President, Billie Lang; Vice-President, Riley Bull; Secretary, Jackie Watson; Treasurer, Gerald Kilmon; and Reporter, Kitty Grey. As Seniors we miss four of our favorite classmates, John Lambdin and David King have moved off the shore, and Bonnie Kellam and Betty Gaye Evans have become Mrs. Nathan Davis and Mrs. Bill Howell; however, we are happy to have Bobby Brashears join us. Time seems to fly; our play Cu¬ pid in Pigtails” is given in December and proclaimed a Smash . College applications are in the mail, invitations, name cards, and thank-you notes are ordered. In its usual splendor, the Athletic Ball is held and ex¬ tremely enjoyed. The Seniors are host to a Spring Fashion Show and the Beacon , on which we have spent many hours of labor, arrives and is distributed. Then comes the Prom, when the Juniors really excell them¬ selves and give us one of the most beautiful Proms imaginable. And now, the fulfillment of our dreams is about to be realized. Class night is be¬ hind us, Baccalaureate is over, and we snap out of our memory to march as Mr. Hoppes begins presenting those valuable rolls of parchment, our much-deserved high school diplomas. We gaze around at our usually jok¬ ing, but now sober, classmates and realize that those characters who claim¬ ed they ' d never cry at Graduation, don’t exactly appear to be viewing a Red Skelton Show . To Mr. Hoppes, our principal; Mrs. Booth and Mr. Fisher, our home¬ room teachers, and to the entire faculty, who have had to cope with our antagonizing antics, our pleasant moods and our evil ones, and who have shown us such patience and understanding, we are humbly grateful and appreciative. To the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen, we leave the echoes of our laughter, and the memories of our marvelous high school days together. In 1948, sixty-odd six-year-olds walked shyly through these doors and up the path of knowledge; tonight, twelve years later, we walk out these same doors up an unknown path to the future. laUviW Friendliest Best Natured Most Ambitious Most Likely to Succeed Wittiest Most In Love Most Popular Most Attractive Kay Joye Gerald Mac Most Personality Most Courteous Most Original Cutest Most Independent Most Mischievous LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Onancock High School of 1961, being of sound mind, now write and declare this our last will and testament, here¬ by withdrawing all previous wills heretofore made by us. Mary Frances Mears Jerry Kappes Testators SENIOR CLASS POEM i. - v. i The time for parting-days now gone, Stand recorded, one by one. Slowly some have passed and others more swiftly, Tolling solemnly the deeds we’ve done. The ties that bind us, classmates, to each other, Broken by the closing hours tonight; Must find us in a spirit all united-- For the principle of right. And you dear classmates of these years, We ' ll bear in memories ' dreams, Where ' ere the road by rough or steep; Your love will send its gleams. For Onancock High we’ve done our best To keep her at a pace-- Where all would know and see here there Ahead, always her place. Schoolmates of lower grades, we leave Her gallant flight to you, Our hands no longer bear the torch; So be forever true. Keep the colors floating at the front-- No duty leave undone-- So at the end you feel the pride; The glory that you ' ve won. So long desired; and yet, how swift the close-- Of this the parting time-- So wishing future happiness for all, We say Good-bye” , in rhyme. Kitty Rhodes Grey With lots of laughter, a little sorrow, and tears We ' ve worked our way through our last four years. Our class as a whole is a lively crew And in number we are far more than few. Each one of our teachers was a guiding light Even though we never thought they were right. We were young; smart with nothing lacking But were often found asking them for backing. Now as the final days roll around, We wonder where next year we ' ll be found, Some with jobs, others away at school, Still studying and following the golden rule. School days seemed filled with complaints and strife, But they ' re really the best days of our life. Janet DoScotch CLASS PROPHECY Dear Mrs. Booth, It hardly seems possible that ten years have passed since we were all together at old O.H.S. I, being an engineer, am spending a few days in New York after having completed another link in the highway from Maine to Florida. Who should I run into here but Jerry Kappes, who now owns his own pharmacy in the new Medical Center, where David Parker has just opened an office. Our own Jackie Watson, now a noted psycholgist, also has an office there, and Eunice Savage is her assistant. Coles Marsh, the dancer of the class, is now dancing professionally. He will make his debut on Broadway next week. Mac Chandler shares an apartment in Greenwich Village with Coles. He has just had a very successful one man art exhibit. J. D. Small, our leading man, has just opened in a Broadway play, The Morning Hours. Berdine Hargis, who always was interested in the commercial courses, now heads the Bookkeeping Department at Goldey-Beacom. Beverly, Bonnie, and Sandy are happy housewives. They say some of us had to stay home and raise the children of the next generation. Alice Formyduval is operating a private kindergarten - her own kids. Kitty Grey and Joye Prier, who loved school so well, are now English teachers in a private girls ' school near Philadelphia. Kay Drummond, who always wanted to be a journalist, is an overseas correspondent for the New York Times. Watch out for a new book coming out soon. Linda Watkinson, who always had the power to charm, is operating a charm school in Texas. She has just charmed the most eligible bachelor of the Texas oil country. Mary Frances Mears and Billie Lang are private secretaries to two busi¬ ness tycoons in Detroit. They have just returned from a California vacation, where they visited our own Linda Sue Cobb, who is making a picture for M.G.M. Fred Harmon has developed the Onley Oil Wells, and Jerry Lilliston and Jackie Harris are his right hand men, keeping everything under control. Bobby Brashears, who got his experience at WESR Radio, is now a TV announcer for CBS. Tommy Hopkins has realized his ambition to be an undertaker and has just opened a new funeral establishment in Norfolk. Our preacher, Scotty Mears, is preaching at the Southern Church in Richmond. Of course, you know that Billy Anderson, always a diplomat, is our Ambassador to Russia. Billy Lilliston is in the Submarine Spy Service, for which he spent many long hours of training. Dixie Smith is a lady paratrooper and just loves to jump, I hear. Gerald Kilmon chose a career in the Air Force and is now a major at the Pentagon. Louise Obenshain, always a whiz at math, is also at the Pentagon as chief mathematician. Dale, our football hero, is now head coach for Navy, and they haven’t lost a game in five years. Vaughan Davis has made quite a name for himself as an electronic engineer with General Electric. He tells me that Norris Barnes has a thriv¬ ing taxicab business in Boston now. Bobby Lilliston, our star runner, has just broken another record at the Olympics. Riley Bull and Janet DeScotch, who were always clowning around, are now circus clowns with the B B Circus. They have been acclaimed the best clowns since Emmet Kelley. Two more of our own, who have advanced in tire business world, are Bobby Coard and Ken Ennis. They have just leased ten more service ga¬ rages on the new East-West Turnpike. Shirley Windsor, who was our star softball player, is now the manager of the team organized and sponsored by the New York Yankees. David Johnson has just been acclaimed the wittiest state trooper in history by the teen-agers. As you can tell from this, the class of 1961 has been a very successful one. With leadership such as we had atO.H.S. we could not have been otherwise. I will be coming through the Shore next week and hope to get by to see you.
