CLASS HISTORY SENIORS!!! We’re Seniors at last and yet, it hasn’t been quite so long as it seems. A short while ago we were seventh graders full of vim, vigor, vitality and a real zest for living. Let us take you back to that September day in 1952 and relive with us our ups and downs as we struggled up that long road to the top -- graduation. Here we are -- all of us -- bewitched, bothered and bewildered with two very kind and understanding teachers. Miss Helen Phillips and Mrs. Gladys Willis. They guided us through this our year of frustration and readjustment beautifully and brought us successfully to the event of the year -- our first graduation. Now we are faced with a new year. We are sorry to lose Henry East, Evelyn Crockett and Shirley Purks, but we welcome Robert Clark, June Hart and Kay Phifer to our number. Mrs. Belote and Mrs. Mary Wood are our homeroom teachers. Well, the Ninth grade and high school at last. A lifetime of waiting -- was it worth it? But definitely! We are sorry to lose Paul Johnson, Billy Meadows, Delmus Justis, Kay Phifer, Everett Evans and Lynwood Crockett, but we are happy to gain many new friends from Accomac. We elect our first class officers: President, Dean Edwards; Vice-President, Joyce Faye Harris; Secretary, Kay Nock; and Treasurer, Betty Gayle Drummond. Our homeroom teachers this year are Mrs. Lotta Booth and Mrs. Sadie Edmonds. The cheerleaders elect one of our girls, Meg Gunter to their ranks, and Meg goes on to become “Queen” and reign over the Athletic Ball. Sophomore Year finds us settling (?) down to the point where we know our teachers and our way around. We welcome Anne Marie Barrack this year, who becomes our new Secretary. We also elect Joyce Faye Harris, President; Jimmy Murray, Vice-President; and Skipper Bell, Treasurer. We also welcome a new teacher to O.H 0 S„ this year, Mrs. Yvonne Dix, who is one of our homeroom teachers. Mrs. Booth is the other one. As thoughts turn to the future and our Prom next year, we begin trying to make money to strengthen our treasury. The climax of this year is a wonderful picnic at Crystal Beach. Before we know it -- lo and behold -- we are Juniors! Immediately our thoughts run in many directions at once -- the Junior Play, classrings and most of all the Prom! We begin to work in earnest to make money. Meanwhile we lose Bill Taylor and Kerr Henderson to Har¬ grave Military Academy and Billie Shrieves to Stratford Junior College. Our Class officers are: President, Robert Clark; Vice-President, Bill Evans; Secretary, Carol Crockett; and Treasurer, Jimmy Murray. Mrs. Senn and Mrs. Booth are our homeroom teachers. Next comes the thrill of ordering class rings and counting the days ’til they arrive with eager antici¬ pation. At last they come and we are all so proud we just can’t help showing them to every¬ one we meet. After Christmas we present our first big performance -- “Aunt Emma” which is such a success that we all decide we are destined to be stars. Well, here it is Spring and time for the Prom. Our theme is “Underwater.” This, we are all sure, is the most beautiful Prom ever given at O.H.S. After a wonderful vacation we return to our at last realized dream -- the role of dignified (?) Seniors. It seems as if Mrs. Booth just can’t seem to part with us because here she is, our homeroom teacher. Now that we are Seniors we realize how much work is between us and that wonderful little roll of paper -- our diploma. We elect the following officers: President, Jimmy Thomas; Vice-President, Elwood Edwards; Secretary, Meg Gunter; Treasurer, Dawn Evans. We are sorry to lose Joyce Faye Harris, but it is to be a good cause -- namely Johnny Williams. We also lost Fay Payne, Billy East, Jimmy Taylor and gain Ann Bennett and Janet Williams and Kenneth Lambdon. We also welcome back an old member of our class who has changed her name during the summer -- Janet Thomas nee Henley. The first big event is the Senior Play, “Our Girls”, a riotious comedy, which we are sure has never been equaled. Many long hours of hard work are spent on the Annual but we make the deadline -- with an hour to spare! We order name cards and invitations and acceptances from various co lleges begin coming in. When, at last we can relax, but no, not quite yet, for caps and gowns must be ordered and alas, the last minute rush begins. Now it’s the very end. Class Night, Baccalaureate, and finally Graduation. We hope you have enjoyed our little trip into the past and we hope you’ll overlook the tear we brush aside as we think of all the wonderful hours these years have held for us. Martha Porter Harmon
