The season ended a week before Thanksgixing on the snow-covered frozen turf of Tiger Stadium in a 2-0 loss against the Adna Pirates. ln between those two trips, the youngest-ever Logger team continued the Never Say Die spirit that has become a tradition here at Onalaska as they won the mini-play-offs for a third place league finish and another trip to the state play- offs. Ilistory was made in the first round as the Loggers defeated the Pacific League and undefeated champs, the Willapa Valley Vikings, who boasted a ffl state rating. Score 14'1-I2FWe wish our graduating Seniors the best of everything and the returning squad members promise more in H6 . Coach Ed Simons With one ofthe youngest teams every in the history of Onalaska this year's team did a remarkable job. We were struck with more injuries and adversities than every before. All of these factors did not stop a determined Onalaska Logger football team in making it to the second round of the state play-offs. The lirst time in doing so in our school's history. With a host oftalent returning next year, we feel with all our hearts that this could he the year we win it Al.I,? Coach Frazier Asst. Coach Harris and Asst. We finished 8-8 in regular season play and were involved in a 3 way tie for 4th place going into the District tournament. The greatest highlight of the season was our victory over Cathlamet on their home court. It earned us the headline in the sports column. This season started out as THE YEAR OF ADVERSITY for the Onalaska Loggers. Gone from last years' overpowering squad were the top seven player due to graduation and defections. However, THE SYSTEM prevailed and THESE PLAYERS went on to have a very successful season. They were competitive in every game, and they were able to pull offa few major upsets. In fact, during the District Tournament, Onalaska lost two very close games to two teams that advanced to the State Tournament. The boys finished first in the league with a 15-1 record and a 15-3 overall record. I had a great group of athletes, even though we didn't get alot of practice time together, we improved every game. The kids did everything I asked ofthem, from running in practice to controlling the boards. They were a super group. We tried to press and run this year and I think the boys did an excellent job and once they got going, their favorite thing was defense, which is one of our areas of major emphasis. They would always ask to press full court. With these great athletes, Coach Bower should expect to have a very optimistic view for the next few years because this is a superb group that works hard and plays hard. Expect to see a grat year of hoop next year from these boys. We only won one match, The wrestlers worked hard through the season with alot of help from assistant Coach Daryl Bridgewater. We improved in all weight classes. Those going on to state were Dale Music and David Briggs. Ross Working was the alternate. I am certain that Travis Brady would have done well at state if he would have not went back to his childhood and got the chicken pox. My biggest concern this year was how David Briggs would compete at state. because I had only seen him have one match where I felt he had to wrestle his best. that was with Camus. He did do his best at State with a first place finish. We will miss the three seniors, Dale Music, Ross Working and Mark Poukkula. ' F r kiln N ax- ,-f if r ' t 4 at STATE TRACK PARTICIPANTS f 'i . .1 fd S The track season of 1986 was one full of surprises and upsetting events. With a very young team Conly 4 seniorsj we took 13 individuals to the state track meet in Wen- atchee, It was a fun year working with many highly motivated runners and field events people. It always seems we needed just a couple of more weeks to prepare. Overall we had an excellent year and we have an even better future in the sport of track and field at OHS. Coach Frazier This year's track season was an outstanding one. Working with the field events I worked with a great group of athletes. The season began with each athlete setting goals for themselves. These goals were broken by each athlete. We had two school records broken, one by Kelly Rains in the long jump at 21' 9 Me which placed him third at the state meet. Gretchen Haakenson set a record in the long jump with a jump of 16' 11 . There were some other excellent outputs. David Briggs in the shotput, discus, and javelin. Pam Briggs in the discus. Roxane Nissell in the shot put and discus. Dora Stancil also in the shot put and discus. Finally, Ian Morgan in both the discus and shot put. It was an excellent season but the best of it was that they were all underclass- men. I'm looking forward to a great season next year, Coach Schupbach This is my first year coaching track at Onalaska, and it was a very pleasing and rewarding season. The students are a really fine group to work with and they show a very positive outlook towards their school's activities. When students after workouts thank you for working with them, a coach knows he is really appreciated. This makes all the time and effort worthwhile. The track team worked hard and won the Girls' and Boys' League Championships. Each and everyone worked as a team to win these championships. Thirteen athletes went to Wenatchee to compete in the state championships. The weather was extremely hot and the thirteen champions came home with eleven medals and an Individual State Championship in the 400 meter dash. The hard work and dedication under adverse condition paid off for these champions. All the athletes of the track team are a tribute to their school and community. I enjoyed working with Ed Simons, jim Frazier, Doug Schupbach, Virgil Buzby and the school administration. The teamwork of this group and the parents support helped to make this a winning season, and a very enjoyable and rewarding track season for me. The Log- gers ended up in 4th place in a 7 team leagueg however, with one more win, we would have been tied for 3rd place and a chance at the playoffs. The end of the season was very disappointing because we were not allowed to play our last two games. As a coach, I feel this team was better than their record showed. Part ofthe cause for this is that we were the only team in the league with only one coach and no home field to practice on. I was very proud to be their coach and even more proud of their accomplishments as a team. The girls ended up with a 4-7 overall record and 2-6 league record. Four games at the end of the season were rained out and there was no chance to make them up. I am very proud of the girls on this team. They never let any problems that all new teams have let them get down. They went out every game and played with heart. They earned the respect of all the teams in the league. With no seniors on this year's team, next year looks very promising. I feel the softball program at Onalaska will continue to grow and improve in the years to come.
