FOOTBALL Coach McKenna issued a call and twenty nine men answered it, Among these were five veteran players from the 1952 squad, These letter-men were J im Tucker, Jack Terpstra, Lloyd Oelke, ,Terry Ringdahl and Bud Marcus. Jim Tucker was injured and had to quit before the season got under way. Coach McKenna with the able assistance of Mr. Fregin quickly rounded the boys in shape for another successful season. Onalaska traveled to Eleva-Strum for the opening game. The boys showed they had ability to come from behind and defeated them 19-18. This game was featured by Lloyd Oelke's long kick-off return, Wonewock invaded Onalaska for the second game at Swanson Field, The I-Illltoppers started out slow but finally won with a strong secondhalf by the score of 20-0. The game consist- ed of 25 fumbles. The Hilltoppers traveled to Blair with high hopes of stopping B1air's winning streak of three games. But Blair, led by their big line and fast backs, nipped the Hilltoppers by the score of '7-6. The Hilltoppers traveled to DeSoto for their Fourth game. It was a rough, hard fought battle with the Hilltoppers coming out on the long end of a 13-0 score. The team came out with two in- juries. Ierry .Tones received a broken arm and was out for the rest of the season, while Jerry Horman was out with a twisted neck. Independence was the next opponent for the Hilltopers. Led by their powerful line and backfield they went on to win 18-15. Bud Marcus was taken to a hospital with a leg injury and was out for the remainder of the season, The fourth annual homecoming finally arrived. Ed Elliot and Joan Thompson reigned over the affair. A big bonfire and pep rally started the festivities. By climaxing the event the Hilltoppers trounced Cashton by a 25-0 score. For the finale, the Onalaska Hilltoppers traveled to meet Hillsboro. It was an evenly matched affair with the final score reading 13-13 and thus giving the Hilltoppers a seasonal record of4 wins, 2 losses, and one tie. It was the last game for six seniors - J' erry Horman, who en- gineered the team from the quarterback' slot, Lloyd Oelke, who ran the ends wild and took scoring honors, Jack Terpstra, with long end runs, Ed Elliot and Orris Hanson with their fine blocking and Larry Lambert with his fine catching of passes. These boys will be greatly missed in building next year's squad. Here's hoping next year's squad thebest of luck for a successful season. COMPLIMENTS or PAGES GROCERY 9

Regardless of the lack of experience and height they were able to finish in 3rd place in conference play. The team had to. be built around Charles Enge and Jerry Ringdahl as they were the only farm-ning ienermen. XXX Wham the - tournameits rolled around Onalaska .went to West Salem with high hopes of taking the championship. Onalaska after a rough first half eliminated Cashton by a score of 65-55. West Salem with the same idea in mind eliminated Onalaska in a rough battle to the finish by scoring over them 67-57, X X The last game was the All-Star game which consisted of seniors of the eight teams in the conference.
