Jim Tucker was injured and had to quit before the season got under way. Coach McKenna with the able assistance of Mr. Fregin quickly rounded the boys in shape for another successful season. Onalaska traveled to Eleva-Strum for the opening game. The boys showed they had ability to come from behind and defeated them 19-18. But Blair, led by their big line and fast backs, nipped the Hilltoppers by the score of '7-6. The Hilltoppers traveled to DeSoto for their Fourth game. It was a rough, hard fought battle with the Hilltoppers coming out on the long end of a 13-0 score. The team came out with two in- juries. Ierry .Tones received a broken arm and was out for the rest of the season, while Jerry Horman was out with a twisted neck. Independence was the next opponent for the Hilltopers. Led by their powerful line and backfield they went on to win 18-15. Bud Marcus was taken to a hospital with a leg injury and was out for the remainder of the season, The fourth annual homecoming finally arrived. Ed Elliot and Joan Thompson reigned over the affair. A big bonfire and pep rally started the festivities. By climaxing the event the Hilltoppers trounced Cashton by a 25-0 score. For the finale, the Onalaska Hilltoppers traveled to meet Hillsboro. It was an evenly matched affair with the final score reading 13-13 and thus giving the Hilltoppers a seasonal record of4 wins, 2 losses, and one tie. It was the last game for six seniors - J' erry Horman, who en- gineered the team from the quarterback' slot, Lloyd Oelke, who ran the ends wild and took scoring honors, Jack Terpstra, with long end runs, Ed Elliot and Orris Hanson with their fine blocking and Larry Lambert with his fine catching of passes.
