jigsaw Footnall Onalaska High School had an extremely successful season this year and emerged from the gridiron with an un- beaten team. Preparation and work began on the morning of August 25, when the men reported to their new coach, Mr. McKenna. Among the reporting men were the rugged lettermen of the previous year--Jack Renstrom, Vernon Zulegar, Nug Holte, Peter Berg, Mickey Lee, Don Hurd, Marvin Horman, Wesley Tabbert, Mike Lambert, and Jim Tucker. The eventful season started when the Hilltoppers swamped the Central B team 31-O. The line opened big holes in which our flashy backs scampered throug to victory. Wonewoc faced us next and after an adventurous bus ride we arrived in their fair city two hours late. The Hilltoppers seemed to bog down and the Wonewoc backs took advantage of this factor. Still O. H. S. kept a seven point lead until late in the fourth quarter when a Wonewoc back scampered around end for a touchdown tieing the game. Onalaska's final drive inside the 30 yard line was stopped by lack of time. Cashton fell to the mighty O. H. S. team next. Again the ambition of our hard blockers and fast, driving, ball-luggers paid off. Eleva-Strum was next on our list and this battle was played under the lights at Swanson Field. McKenna's men gobbled up a 38 point lead in that game coming out on top for the Hilltoppers 44-6. Independence fell next to the spirited Onalaska team with O. H. S. driving the pigskin across three times. Finally the long -awaited game arrived. O. H. S. was matched against the favored Blair team which was un- defeated! The Blair undefeated eleven were shipwrecked by the victorious Onalaska team by a score of 14-0. Stamina and spirit prevailed in the Hilltoppers and led them to victory. Homecoming was here again! Vernon Zulegar and Donee Lundgren ruled over the big event. A pep rally and parade was held after the game. The festivities were climaxed by a 46-'7 victory over Hillsboro ending a success- ul season. The team was led by backs--Jack Terpstra, who took top scoring honorsg charginlg Jerry Ringdahl, who was also the top passer and kicker: quarterback Bob Poss, who was the brains of the team an did an excellent job call- ing plays: speedy Lloyd Oelkeg driving Don Hurd: the fullback, and Phil Topel, wingback. Linemen that led the successful attacks against the oplposition were, ends--Marvin Horman, Jerry Lambert, and Wesley Tabbert fwho was injured in the latter part of t e seasonyg tackles--Vernon Zulegar, Peter Berg, Nug Holte, and Jim Tucker: guards--Jack Renstrom, and Mickey Lee, and center Bud Marcus. The team and their coaches, Mr. McKenna and Mr. Fregin, both did an excellent job in adding to the glory of O. H. S. 's victorious football team. . -r N :rr ffl? f jx X 'S . .
