I:Ol2El1SlCS There were twenty-one students who represented O. H.S. in forensics. The local contest was held on February 23, 1953 and eleven out of those twenty-one were elected to represent us at Melrose. They were Donna Tucker, Jack Terpstra, Jill Freng, Gwen Fitzsimmons, Mickey Lee, Ken Aiken, HURRA Ingalls, Douglas Monsoor, Carl McGinnis, and Peter Berg. ul ronlid, Mr. Dwyer and Mr. Collins coached these people in the fields of original and non-original ora- ml ME. Wang: Jumon class pta Beauty and the Beef , a three act comedy, was presented by the Junior Class on January 15, under the capable direction of Miss Gronlid and Mr. Collins. The plot revolves around a Chicago family who had just moved to the town of wmnebagushi. Hormanp Mrs. Taylor. stuoent council The Student Council of 1952-53 held its first organizational meeting in September. The following officers were elected for the yearg Pres. Mickey Lee, Vice-Pres. Ruth Huggett, Sec. Treas. Muriel Marcus. The faculty advisors were, Mrs. Taylor, Miss Cook, Mr. Dwyer, and Mr. Hadler. The council voted to affiliate with the National As- sociation of Student Councils and it received the officialStudent Council Magazine. Meetings were held every Tuesday during the noon hour. The council set up its goal the promotion and improvement of the Onalaska School program through the democratic medium of student body representatives. Some of the major and successful projects of the year included the following: 1. Establishment of a democratic procedure of electing cheerleaders by t e entire student body using the secret ballet procedure. 2. Promotion of the homecoming spirit by making and selling purple and white shakers. 3. Proposing a concrete program for the granting of senior privileges, including the setting up of the privileges granted and the restriction included. This plan was accepted by the faculty and put into effect the second six weeks of school. The councilhas discussed further a tentative plan to extend rivileges to qualified underclassmen. 4. The sponsoring of an all school party, including the entertainment, reffeshments, and other organizational duties. ln addition, many minor matters were discussed and action taken. On the whole, the student council had a very successful year. 28
