n lon class Early in the winter of 1941 the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor, Early in the fall of 1941 approximately 40 wide- eyed six year olds invaded the Onalaska Grade School, Miss Berg was our first teacher, How well we remember all the seat work and crayons that were used that year, When we were in the first grade our class was divided, We were to much for one teacher to take care of, In second grade we had Miss Remsly for our teacher, We were divided again this year, How big we thought we were when we had lockers to put our books in, Y 1 In the third grade we were together for the first time and Miss Walsh kept us well in hand. This was the first year that some of the boys started noticing the irls. Rags always was a g In the fourth rade our class i t. Granston a Miss Schroeder, During -ihis year Vernetta Wilson, and Donee Lundgren joineq our happy group, The boys became WARE of the girls being sdmething other than just to tease, This was the first year we had dances, First the girls ha to teach the boys how to dance and then we had to manevuer them out on the floor, In aghth grade we w e all together again with MF, Fregin ading us through a very sul cessful year, During this year Peter Stolenwork, Ve netta Wilson, Rita Holthaus, and Arla Zigler left us, Bob Mikels a d Janey Anderson joined us, Our class felt very sorpy over the sudden death of a wonderful lassmate, Ervin Cox, is year the girls were es- pecially proud ofthe boys they entered the Junior H' h Coulee Conf ence Basketb ournament and proceeded to walk away with the Championship T hy. ended our Junior High with the ig event of 8th grade commencement with Vernetta Wilson and Peter Berg as Valedictorian and Salutatorian respectively. At last! ! ! We were ready for High School, We really felt big when we entered our Freshman year at O, H. S, Our class officers were: Don Hurd, Pres. 1 Mike Lambert, Vice-Pres. Marvin Horman Secretary-Treasurer, Mr, Thompson, Miss Haller, and Miss Gier were our advisors who helped us through a very successful Freshmen year, Boots Melcher, Don Olson, Ruth Huggett, Pat Russell, Gordon Krause and Cleo Johnson joined us this year, Vernon Seekamp and Gordon Krause left the same year, Billy Brown also left us this year, We were rather lucky as the only initiation we received was at the Initiation Party given in our honor by the Sophomores, This was the year football returned to O, H, S, after 20 years. Our freshmen class really felt proud I4
