Degrees: B. S. , Goddard College Graduate Work: Bridgewater State and Boston U. Additional: Behere Institute Teaches: English-Lit. 11 8: 12, Honors English 12 Years at OHS: 3 Hwulty and 6'1a.s'.re.f Both the OHS faculty and the list of classes had new members in the fall of 1965. Mr. Paul Ernst and Mr. Dave Johnson were added to the faculty. Music Theory, Speech, and Honors English made their debut as outstanding and worthwhile classes. A graduate of EWSC, Mr. Ernst taught speech, English 10, and world history. Mr. Johnson, a 1965 graduate of the University of Puget Sound, taught U. S. History and was on the coaching staff. Both teachers were invaluable aids to the students in extra-curricular activities and as members of the teaching staff. Music theory was a very successful course. By learning major and minor scales, chords and chord progressions, and composition principles, the students mastered the basic fundamentals of music structure. Through this study, they gained a much better understanding of how music is made. Through units on the different types of speeches, debate, and the use of the microphone, the students in speech class learned the proper technicalities inherent in speech-making. They developed an innate sense of accomplishment and greater confidence in themselves. Its worth as a course is obvious in the statement of Mr. Ernst, the instructor, -- The individuals in the class have improved in some cases as much as 500125. Honors English has now been in OHS for two years. The class, for advanced senior English students, was based on the idea of non-competitive intellectual activity. Through considerable amounts of litera- ture and writing, the students explored and evaluated many areas of human creativity. Each student functioned on his own level and was judged by his own self-set standards. It has effectively stimulated the development of the student's faculties for critical and creative evaluation. CHARLES GASSETT Honors English--Challenging! I
