As I sit here reminiscing the good old days , I recall a certain marvelous day in the fall of 1941. It was that long-awaited first day of school! We were all more than eager to be- gin our long journey through the first twelve steps of our education. Our first major contribution to the school's society was the famous Rhythm Band. At least, we thought it was an extra- ordinary organization .... Throughout the remainder of our grade school career we occupied ourselves with chasing: one day the boys chased the girls, the next day the routine was varied tremend- ously by the girls chasing the boys. We entered Junior High School with much fear and trepidation. But by the end of the first week we had become adults for so we thoughtj. Unfortunately, our actions re- vealed that we still had a long way to climb. Almost every day some over-active stu- dent felt the sting of the familiar paddle. Even when we were in the ninth grade and supposedly had acquired a measure of level- headed intelligence, Mr. Esvelt's algebra class had to ruin the illusion by dropping their books on the floor at the same time. Finally came the big day of graduation. The next fall we took our last step and be- came an integrated part of a bustling society, namely, High School. The first thing we did was entertain our- selves at our Sophomore Party. By the end of the year we had accomplished many things and had absorbed some very important knowledge fdue to Mr. Irwin's constant prod- dingy, we knew all about the birds and bees. In the junior year our major project - besides United States History and English III - was a marvelous extravaganza called the Junior Prom. Deep Purple was definitely a successg therefore we anticipated the fall of our sen- ior year when we could again elaborate, with colored lights, streamers, and autumn leaves, on the annual Senior Ball. Early Autumn was in keeping with the season and proved very successful. The College Conference made us realize completely that we are now seniors. No long- er are we looked down upon as lowly un- derclassmen. Of course, we know and fully appreciate the fact that only with the help of the teachers and the underclassmen could we have attained our goal. Now, we leave Omak high school - still faintly hearing the poignant strains of Pomp and Circumstancen - to remember forever our pleasant days of learning. As we take our places in life, we shall be capable of upholding the principles of free- dom and truth if we remember always that: They conquer who believe they can. 'vh.S Junior Class ficers Ilgpgiilgliigh, Vice Presidentg Gary Fenske, Presidentg Gail McCabe, Secretar Delving through the past year of the 1953 Junior class, we find a var- iety of activities and events concerning the class of '54, First on the list of their accomplishments was the election of class of- ficers. The results were: Gary Fenske, presidentg Don Rench, vice presidentg Gail McCabe, secretary-treasurer. The Junior class was well represented in the various sports, as well as in debate, Thespians, and other extra-curricular activities. The most spectacular achievement of the class was their production of the Junior-Senior Prom and Dessert. The prom decorations consisted of silver foil, angel hair and silver stairway in the center of the room rising to a ceiling of stars and clouds. The decorations beautifully illustrated the theme Stairway to the Stars. Camille Price, presidentg Larry Anderson, vice preside-ntg and Carol Watts, secretary-treasurer. Continuing the tradition started by the preceding class, May 2, the Sophomores sponsored a Sophomore Hopi' in the Emert gym. The students have been very active during the year selling pop and popcorn for football and basketball games. Through many hard hours of service to the school, many Sophomores have earned the honor to become Pep club members. Camille Price Larry Anderson Carol Watts 1 B USY y -QEVL.. After being the hard luck team of the district throughout the greater part of the season, the Omak footballers walloped their last two opponents to end the season in a blaze of glory. The Pioneers were conquered in each of their first six games by the slim margin of one touchdown. This gave them the reputation of being one of the toughest teams in the valley despite their dismal won and lost record, While their won and lost re- cord was not as impressive as that of the 1951 team, they took no bad beatings, hold- ing such powers as Wenatchee, Cashmere, Chelan and Tonasket to the usual one touchdown victory. With a little luck the Pioneers could have beaten any of them. Gary Baines, Senior halfback, was voted honorary captain by his teammates. Dick Jaquish, all 135 pounds of him, was voted inspirational player. Pete Kurth, Se- nior tackle, received the best blocker award. The only outside honor conferred upon the team was given to Lee Wilson, Ju- nior center. The sports staff of the Wenatchee Daily world placed him on their mythi- cal All-District team as a reward for his sterling defensive play at that position all season. While .many good lettermen are being lost by graduation this year, the prospects are good for next year. Boasting only two men over six feet tall, the Picneers, after a dismal start, came back to win the last six games of the season and a trip to the District Playoffs in Walla Walla. The overall record of the Pioneers was good, but nct outstanding. They won 12 and lost 11. Coach Pat Glendenning continually stated, even after a defeat, that his boys were going to Walla Walla. His spirit must have been catching because the team really responded during the last weeks and took care of everybody in sight. The team opened its season with three straight defeats at the hands of Peshastin, Richland and Gonzaga, respectively. They won their next two and from there until the last weeks, split almost evenly, The Pioneers really learned to play under pressure, as they had 5 overtime games and 5 other games de- cided by less than 5 points. The fans usually left with their .money well spent on thrills. Jitters and poor shooting combined to stop the Pioneers in the district tournament as the Walla Walla team took the first game, 68-43, and the Wenatchee Panthers took them the second night, 43-33, with the Pio- neers hitting il'W of their shots. Verdell McCormack served as captain for the Pioneers this year and led all scorers on the team with 399 points, Verdell came up with one of the highest averages in the Inland Empire this year. McCormack also chalked up the highest free throw average, 78 per cent. John Staggs was chosen by his teammates to lead the team next year. Len Gargett was chosen as inspirational player of the year. The Omak Pioneer Babes, the usual forgotten men of the year, did a fine job this year in winning 13 games and losing only 4. The Babes won their first ten games of the year, but were then weakened as the 'Al squad took some of their key men to play with them. However, Cashmere was the only team to escape defeat by the 'Bls'. They took the Omakers twice. Players on the 'B' team were, Emmit Aston, Norm Hamilton, Lynn Cox, Gene Petersen, Brian Finegan, Paul Baines, Al Taylor, Ken Staggs, Lee Wilson and Jack Brauer. The KB' squad was very ably coached this year by Howard Roth. Many of Roth's charges will be bolstering the 'A' squad next year after this year of valuable exper- ience. Omak looks forward to a good year in baseball with the return of six lettermen. Included are Ver- dell McCormack, Len Gargett, Kenny Pixley, Ber- nard Burdett, Duane Kammenga, and Jim Klimek. Counting four practice games with Okanogan the Pioneers will have 14 contests. All NCW class A league games will be played in double headers to eliminate travel expenses. In addition to the four NCW teams, Moses Lake, Ephrata, Cashmere and Wenatchee, the Pioneers play two games with Tonasket. Lee Wilson and Don Rench, two lettermen of last year who were eliminated by a fall and illness re- spectively, will be student managers of the squad. The baseball team is coached by Pat Glendenning. The Omak track team bolstered by eight return- ing lettermen, has high hopes for a good year. They open the season with the Annual Omak Invitational on April 18.
