Most of the members served previously on similar nnderclass groups. Choosing appropriate names, mottoes, flowers, and colors from which tlze entire class conld make a selection occupied the attention of this body during its early sessions. 'ine forininu of the staff of the senior paper was also accomplished. Committees of all kinds were chosen from the cabinet to help with the Most and Best Dance. Senior Banquet and Senior Picnic, Assemblies, homerooms, and other events in which the whole class partici- pated. Volunteers frotn the class and all the homeroom sponsors contributed their share, however, in order that the sen- ior year of 1950-:SU would run smoothly, Mrs. llerman and Mr, Peace, the two counselors. were never far away when good advice was needed. Mr. Weber also was available with scholarship information. Miss Baldridge sponsored the cabinet. Junior-Senior Prom, Peony Park. ......... March 18 Most and Best Dance, Tech lligh Cafeteria . . . T Choi! v 5 S Q A Sign of a Star was the title of this year's Christmas play, sponsored by the Playmakers and directed By Mr. Ken Roy. Members of Tech's Junior Choir, and the senior Choir, under guidance of Mr. V. Carlsen, added a musical back- ground to the pleasant story of Heaven's first Christmas. Gabriel and Keeper of the Records, the p1ay's two leading roles, were played by Gary Sindelar and John Beasley, respectively. Sylva Jeck was cast as the choirmaster with Cynthia Hoffman and Diane Minarde interchanging in the parts of the messenger and Keeper of the Stars. Karen McCrea rounded out the cast as assistant to the Keeper of the R ecords. Christmas d a Carols cieate C L . 1 1 . , 1 v Tech's first play of the year was presented November 18 and 19 in Tech's auditorium. The play, a three-act comedy by Joseph Kesslering, starred Nina Bieda, Rose Allender, Gary Sindelar, Jack Porter, Dick Slama, Nichola Childers, and Gail Fielding. This production is a conglomeration of events that lead to the exposing of two very insane Aunts. These old ladies, played by Nina Bieda and Rose Allender, are so sweet and kind that no one can imagine their doing any harm. Teddy Brewster, played by Gary Sindelar, imagined himself to be Teddy Roosevelt and re-lives Roosevelt's life from several books. Teddy provided much of the comedy, between blowing bugles and his expeditions to Panama, in reality the cellar. Jack Porter gave a rendition of Mortimer Brewster, the dramatic critic who gets involved in family situations and is tom between his loyalty for his Aunts and his conscience. Nichola Childers and Gail Fielding alternated in taking the part of Elaine, Mortimer's girl friend. Further humor was supplied by Dick Slama playing the part of Dr Albert Einstein. Larry Ellison played Johnathan Brewster, the black sheep of the Brewster household, while Jack Connell, Emmett Cribbs, and Russell Suiter la ed su rtin roles. Carol Hill rounded out the P Y PPO S cast to make this a very successful and enjoyable play. ucmfiel' Arsenic and Old Lace ,Y X aj 1 fl' Q f S' ut- - if ' fusr ' . , ISU If flght to Peop 18, Ir Yes, it is true. Tech High's own Dance Band pro- vided the heart beat that set the back- ground for dancing and listening. This year a new idea, that of co-sponsorship of the dance, was tried and used very suc- cessfully by the Y-Teens and Hi-Y. The Heart Hop Royal crowning ceremonies were preceded by a form al procession of all candidates and attendants and followed by entertainment from the Emeralds. The King was chosen from the Hi-Y Club and the Queen was from Y-Teens. The mem- bers of these two clubs elected their roy- alty for the dance. The meetings were under the sponsorship of Spanish Teacher Miss D. Rindone and were held Tuesday mornings at 7:45 in room 234. Tech debaters participated in a chain of events this year. Besides sponsoring a beginners' tournament in the fall, the debaters, under Coach Kenneth Gilreath, acted as host for the Girls' Missouri Valley Advanced Tourna- ment. Several teams debated in the Boys', Girls', and Open Missouri Valley, the State Tourna- ment in Lincoln, and the National Forensic League Tournament in Hastings, Nebra- ska. The debaters also represented Tech on the television panel discus- sion, Teen Topics. Except for three seniors, Kay Calame, Sandra Little, and Barbara Pigman, the debate squad consists of beginning sophomores. Sixteen sopho- mores obtained membership in the National Forensic League. A lot of hard work is put into this organization before all performances or dances to please the student body. At the dances, it is really a pleasure to the wailing musicians who make up the band to see satisfaction in the faces of Rockin' Queens and Rollin' Kings ripping the dance floor from corner to corner. No grades or credits are given for this activity. The members play for their own satisfaction. They are selected on a basis of talent. This year's dance band was composed of six seniors, one junior, and five sophomores. The band not only has requests from the clubs in Tech to play for dances, but on occasions the members re- ceive invitations from Out-State schools to come and play, and entertain at dances. Beasley, King, Hall, Conzemius. Vo rsiiy 1959 was Tech's most successful football season in years. The Trojans, under Head Coach Dick Christie and new assistant, Robert Trumbauer, compiled a season record of five wins and three losses. Tech opened the season with a 31-O rout over Abraham Lincoln of Council Bluffs, then squeezed by Benson, 14-7, on a Gary Sindelar to Charles Skaggs touchdown pass in the final minutes, on a rain-soaked field. Tech then traveled to meet the Little Maroons of Coaches: Al LaGreca, Bob Trumbauer, Dick Christie, Eldon Sheldon, and Milt Hearn. 96 Sioux City Central. The 100-mile trip became little more than a bus ride as Tech lost, 18-41. The next game was a long one also, as Prep beat the Trojans, 32-7. Tech bounced back to down South and then upset Central, 31-19, after a halftime deficit of 6-19. The spotlight then shifted on Tech as the Trojans met a highly favored North eleven, which was undefeated in league play. Preston Love, Dick Christie, and Rodney Gray. When the final gun sounded, Tech held a slim 7-6 margin, but it was enough for a thrilling victory and a tie for the league lead. Tech met Lincoln High on a cold, frozen field. The Links, wearing tennis shoes, went around and through the slipping, sliding, Trojan defenders and took a 44-6 victory, killing Tech 's hopes for a share of the league championship. The Trojans finished with a fourth place state rating. Rodney Gray and Preston Love were selected by Jack Payne, sports director for Radio WOW and WOW-TV, on his all-city tearn. These two boys were also elected all-city by Gregg McBride, Sports Editor of the World- Herald, with Gary Sindelar, Dick Hodges and Steve Gould receiving honorable mention. Preston was chosen all-state by the World-Herald, while Rodney Gray received all-state honors from the Lincoln Journal and United Press News Service. Head Coach Dick Christie was named coach-of-the- year by Jack Payne and was presented a trophy. Moonlight Raiders Pictured on this page are the Moonlight Raiders and the Sunlight Rebels which were Tech's starting of- fensive and defensive units during the 1959 football season. 'These two units were Tech's counterparts to Louisiana State University's Chinese Bandits. The Moonlight Raiders were the starting defensive eleven and nick- named themselves so, because of the after-dark work- outs held in getting primed for the coming clashes. The original raiders are from left, First Row: Fay Hykel, Dick Winters, Ray fPanchoj Rivera, Rodney Gray, and Dick Hodges. Second Row:Willie Mitchell, Steve Olson, Bill King, Preston Love, Charles Skaggs, and Harry Rutledge. The Sunlight Rebels, Tech's starting offensive unit, nicknamed themselves so, obviously because their workouts were held before the sun went down and their scoring punch always seemed to brighten a game for Trojan fans. The original rebels are pictured here wit.h the exception of guards Steve Could, who transferred to Michigan, and Rodney Gray, who was not present when this photo was taken. Gou1d's place is taken by his replacement, Don Robidioux, and back Fred Farth- ing wears Gray's suit and takes his place in the line. The eyes of Tech are upon you, Mr. Packer, as Trojans Rodney Gray 140j, John Beas- ley 1451, and Dick Winters 1281, close in on a worried South ball-carrier. L T One, Two, Three, kick--Fred Farthing's magic toe sends the football booming through the uprights adding an extra point as the scoreboard registers Tech's 13 point lead. Shall we dance? Tro- jan Steve Olson 1245 is about to accept this Packers invitation to a new dance called Stop that Runner as Don Robidioux 137j is about to cut in. Hold it a minute fellas, I lost something. Help me find it, will you? Seconds later this Prep back found what he was looking for--the end zone and six more Prep points. Peek-A-Boo! KNEELING: James Shaw, manager. The Reserves had quite a successful season this year as they compile an 11-3 record. Their only losses came twice to Benson, the eventual league champion, and a one-basket loss to Lincoln High. James Carter and Fred Farthing were the main scorers and could usually be counted on to earn a good majority of the total points. Freshmen Roger Sindelar and Charles Thomas were bright spots for Coach Sheldon and a hope toward another good season next year. Tech is one of the few schools in the inter-city league not allowing juniors to play on reserve squads. Because of this, Tech faced many more experienced teams, and doing as well as they did, Coach Sheldon was very pleased with the record. Both Freshman coaches had two teams: An A team and B team. Coach Frank Catania's B team finished in first place with a 5-1 record, the only defeat coming from Norris Junior High, 26-29. The B team's high scorer was Donald Stewart with a 13-point per game average. Other outstanding players were Don Dober and I-lar vey Wright. Catania's A team didn't do so well as it finished the season with a 3-3 record. Cordell Davis was the outstanding player, averaging 11 points per game. Coach Johnny Morse's teams didn't have the luck that Catania's teams did. However, Coach Morse did have a few bright spots including Johnny Alexander, who averaged 18 points a game to lead all freshmen. nfl , 1. N 4 ,JPG ..f,........ Hooplights Tech's go-go Trojans started the 1959-1960 basketball season with a bang by stopping Creighton Prep, 65-57, for a victory in the pre-season competition. The prospects looked great when the Trojans invaded the Benson gym for an early look at the highly touted Bunnies. The Bunnies hopped to a 58-39 upset, caus- ing the Trojans to re-shuffle their lineup. A rejuvenated Tech five played the entire next game against Central and upset the favored Eagles, 54-51, at the new Norris Junior High gym. Although pressed for three quarters, the go-go Techsters ran away from Thomas Jefferson of Council Bluffs, 64-55. A surprisingly tough Viking crew from North gave the Trojans trouble before losing, 35-48. The stage was set for the clash between Tech and the undefeated South High Packers. Tech faded late in the game and lost, 68-78. However, Tech bounced back to take a 62-55 victory over Abraham lincoln of Council Bluffs, adding a second victory to the Trojans' unblemished intercity record. Here, those elusive Bunnies came in again and ran away with a close decision, 52-48. The Trojans took their revenge on Lincoln High, beating the state champions, 64-52, then turned on West- side, trouncing the new league addition, 57-45. Boys' Town provided a tough contest, but Tech beat the Town, 59-52. Another meeting with South proved futile as the Packers overcame a 13-point deficit to win going away, 68-57. North then fell under Tech's wrath, 73-48, and still smarting from the Packer loss, Tech downed Creighton Prep, 79-64. Central drew the season-ending game with Tech and again took a drubbing, 59-54, but managed to salvage a second-place tie in the intercity race with the Trojans, both teams sporting 6-2 records. Tech's first foe in the District Toumament, held at the Omaha University Fieldhouse, was North High. After a hard struggle, Tech emerged victorious, 46-36, and met Benson in the finals. Tech was severely undermanned when it took the court against the Bunnies. Bob love, junior guard, was ill and did not attend the game. Fred l-lare, a freshman, was home with a severelysprained ankle. Gary Sindelar, a senior who played a little of everything but was currently playing the post position, attended the game but was not in uniform due to a football injury. The lead changed hands many times throughout the game. Don Boone, one of Tech's leading rebounding and scoring artists, fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Coach Neal Mosser, short on experienced post position men, moved Nate Goodwin, a converted post playing guard, into Boone's place. James Nash, an inexperienced junior guard, came off the bench and potted four free throws as the regulation game ended in a tie. Four seconds before the end of the overtime, Benson's Ken Connors hit a 20-foot jump shot to send the game into a three-minute sudden-death period. When a Bunnie missed a free throw on a foul, Bill King rebounded, dribbled down the court and potted the game winning shot, giving Tech a 71-69 victory and State Tournament berth. At the State Tournament, held on the University of Nebraska's court in lincoln, Tech drew North Platte in the opening game, and the Platters went down in defeat, 50-55, but only after a terrific struggle. Two free throws apiece by Preston Love and Nate Goodwin, plus a basket by Bill King, iced the game for the Techsters who had lost their eight-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Lincoln Southeast took on Tech in the semifinals before a packed house. The Knights had too much power for the Trojans and Tech went home after a 48-61 loss. Preston Love was selected as All-City by the World-Herald. Preston Love hits a basket, although 'Uh' What's up, Doc? Coach Hearn spent much time training an usually good stock of underclassmen. Because there was no set varsity squad, most of the wrestlers got some varsity experience, which should prove invaluable to the non-seniors of the team. Only four boys will leave the team in 1960. They are Seniors Steve Olson, Bill Horn, Larry Walker, and Paul Melinga- gio. Steve Olson was Tech's,on1y outstanding wrestler and candidate for City and State honors. The Paulsen Brothers, Alvin and Albert, seemed to trade matches. Being in different weight divisions, one of the two would win while the other was losing. Coach Hearn says he is expecting big things from these and other boys in the year to come. Tech's swim team under Head Coach Bill McKimmey has also been building for the future. Only four seniors dot this year 's squad. Mr. McKimmey is hoping that the experience the underclassmen have received this year will produce a successful unit in the coming year. These were coach Eldon Sheldon's viewpoints on the 1960 track season. Last year's graduation left the Trojan cindermen severely undermanned and inexperienced. Sheldon banked on his sophomores and seniors to carry the load this year. The loss of Richard I-lalcomb, ace broad jumper and sprint man, due to overage, added salt to the wound. Preston Love, a senior, who specializes in the low and high hurdles and the high jump, was also called on for some running events. A new addition, Jackie Hunter, was a big help to Tech's sprinting corps. David I-Ialcomb was much faster than last year and was expected to place high in his events. Claude Spencer, a perennial slow starter, holds Tech's 440-yard dash record which he set last year as a freshman. Rueben Jackson, another crack sophomore, was also much faster than last year. Rueben ranks second in the nation in high school AAU Hop- Step-and-Jump competition. . ,f 1 lf L . ,V .11 Tech's 440 -yard dash record holder, Claude Spencer, readies himself for a fast start. Two weeks before the first scheduled game, snow was still on the ground making outside practice impossible. However, these eager beavers improvised and held workouts in the gym where these photos were taken. Coach John Morse looked forward to quite a successful season after the great finish made by these boys in the summer league playing under Roberts colors. After beating Georges', 9-8, in the first game of the summer tour- nament, Roberts ousted the number one title contender, Metz, 7-3, before 600 shocked fans at Brown Park, Meu's home field. Coach Morse was satisfied that his infield was as good as any in the league. Don Boone, coming back after a year lay-off, rounded out the infield by taking over at third base. His fielding and big bat were a boost to the team. Tech had as fine a double-play combination as any team in the city. Both veterans, Cary Sindelar at short, and Chuck Skaggs at second, these two turned in many sparkling plays throughout the year help- ing Trojan hurlers out of many jams. These two also provided Tech's one-two punch at the plate, assaulting opposing pitchers. Carl Anderson held down first base. He is only a sophomore and is expected to bolster the team's defense in his final two years. Also Bob Corner, dependable outfielder, was converted to a catcher and filled in very well for the graduated Vaughn Robidioux. Bob turned into a clutch hitter in many instances. In the outfield, Tech had Dick Hodges, a hard-hitting two-year letterman. Dick's big bat slammed home many runs. Jack Connell, James Carter and Don Robidioux commanded the other two fly- hawking positions. Pitching was Tech's main problem. Wally Jernigan, only a junior, was the Trojans' senior hurler with Gary Miller running a close sec- ond. With several games back to back, there was little or no relief pitching. Don Dober was the chief fireman with Don Boone filling in at times. The returning lettermen were Wally Jernigan, Carl Anderson, Bob gorner, Chuck Skaggs, Gary Sindelar, Dick Hodges, and Don Robi- ioux. 1960 Baseballers were, FIRST ROW: Wally Jemigan, Carl Anderson, Bob Corner, Gary Miller, Jack Connell.
