Here is your year around school: familiar faces, beloved places, most of all the cultivation of ideas and of lasting friendships. If the Liongate reminds you of this year, if future years find you referring back to it and smiling, our task has been worth while. - The Staff - Table of Contents Autumn Winter Spring Administration Classes Organizations Sports Sports Junior-Senior Prom Heart Hop School Daze Sports Starlift Spring Concert Seniors Since this is the initial publication of the LIONGATE, we will give a short account of its christening. The exact name, LIONGATE, was applied to the name of the main entrance to the city of Troy. After considerable research, LIONGATE was selected because the staff liked the size and sound of the word, and because its association bore with it appropriately suggestive meanings of the Trojans. Jack Dyer, James Swanson, Dwain Eckberg, and Craig Bradbury put the school in second place in the Boys' Missouri Valley contest. Cora Lee Groves, Joan Vecera, Carol Raddle, and Kathryn Nosky pulled in second at the Girls' Mis- souri Valley tournament. The squad was not at a standstill. Proof of this was shown through the participation of thirty people in speech activities. In tact, they took part in over 225 interscholastic debates, plus numerous practice tournaments. The second semester the sponsor was Dr. Ira Jones, with Mr. George Laitner as the classroom advisor. The Council engaged in numerous activities during the year. The first pep rally was spon- sored by the council and the first dance of the year, The Third Annual Fall Opener. Another important project of the Council was the setting up of the Student Commission, as a separate, independent organization, with its own officers, instead of being merely a part of the Student Council. Throughout the year this group sold Trojan decals and provided members to work in the lunchroom along with the teachers. They A carried on locker inspection programs, and pre- sented awards to those having perfect attend- ance and those who made the honor roll. They helped with the Community Chest, stuff- ing envelopes for the homerooms. The Student Council provided ushers and helped to sponsor both Freshman Night, Cfor new freshmen and their parentsl, and Open House, held November ll. At Christmas the council was especially busy. They operated records in the lunchroom, and decorated the tree in the lobby. The council has always sponsored the annual Christmas dance, and did so again, naming it the Holly Hop. The Troians were then put on the city forecaster's list as an upset team. Tech next saw action against Abraham Lincoln of Council Bluffs. The Troians were masters of the first half, but wilted in the final stanzas, to be defeated 20-12. The Cuming Street Kids then met powerful North on the Benson field and the Tech lads were rebuked in their try for their second inter-city win. Tech went on the first of two road trips of the season and returned to the school campus with a 6-O victory over Sioux City Central. Fine defensive work saved the Tech victory. Parade South High furnished the opposition at Munici- pal Stadium as the Troians rambled to a tie with the Packers 6-6. Extra-point-itis crippled the Tech outlook for a victory. Central then nudged the Tech Boys in one of the oldest rivalries in the city, 7-6. Again the extra point was the cause of defeat. Creighton Prep then stampeded past the Ma- roons, 33-7. Prep was the top team in both the city and the state. One Tech player was awarded the honor of being placed on the World-Herald All-State team. He was hard-running Jack Hansen. Jack also re- ceived honors as the outstanding prep player in the city by WOW-TV, and was named an Inter-City team halfback. Girls' Sports Another year full of girls' sports activity, which to many a young girl has meant enioyment and sorrow, has endedf But new stars Wiilmbeuthere to take the place of the old ones, with the thought in mind, to participate in a good sport and to be- come one. Sports that were participated in this year were sottball, volleyball, basketball, advanced and be- ginning badminton, tennis, archery, swim, and table tennis. Modern dancing and tumbling were the newest activities to be added to the girls' pro- gram. This year has been very successful in all of the sports that were offered. Basketball One of the most enioyed sports played by both boys and girls is basketball. This year, for the girls interested, there was lots of action in the girls' gym. When the teams were organized, there was a practice game for the girls to warm up, then the tournament began. The teams that participated were the Hey-Hey- Be-A-Champs, the Morons, the Junior Globe Trot- ters, the Eight Balls, Joy Neuhaus' team, and Percilla Beddow's team. About sixty girls came. The organization of the teams was easy. Then the tourna- ment began with each team play- ing all others twice. The teams participating were the Morons, the Hey-Hey-Be-A-Champs, and the Fireballs. The Hey-Hey-Be-A-Champs won the final game making them the champs of volleyball. One of the most popular activities of the winter season was the tum- bling class. After the first few lessons many of the tumblers found muscle aches. However, by the end of the class it was quite amazing to see the stunts the class members performed with the greatest of ease. This year for the first time the freshman cheer- leaders were required to enroll in the tumbling class. ,Y MZ , f , 76 , Q, I fy . J, X.. There were approxi- mately l5 girls who went out for the sport. Archery takes a lot of muscle and energy. Mrs. Burdette Norton, the instructor of the archery class, found it very interesting to watch the way the girls reacted to this sport. The girls also found it very interesting, but found some very sore muscles after the first few days. The class lasted eight weeks. Badminton Watch the birdie! Swish! That is what was happening in the girls' gym after school on Thurs- day during the winter activity period. Badminton takes lots of pep and energy but the girls were equal to it. Following several practice periods they were all entered in a double elimination tourna- ment. The final game was played between unbeat- en Sophomore Roberta Longmore and once beaten Sophomore Marlene Gottula. Roberta kept her per- fect record by defeating Marlene, thus becoming the Tech High badminton champion for 1954. Left to right: Gottula, Longmore. A question of numerous answers isn't it? Here's the most common: A coach is a man or woman who is expected to take charge of a group of young people and produce from them a winning team. A better definition is found in the following: A coach is a person in charge of a sport who is ex- pected to build the character of mind and body of his team. If a coach can succeed in making ath- letes good Americans, he has won the greatest and highest award of all. So, to the Tech mentors, Congratulations for your fine contributions and whole hearted effort in bringing sportsmanship and winning teams to Tech High. This sport, otherwise known as ping pong, was played in almost all recreational activities. This year the sport was played in tournament style. The final games were played and a champion was selected. This year's cham- pionship went to Margaret King, who was a Freshman. The runnerup spot went to Denise Martin, who was also a Freshman. Modern Dancing was introduced to the girls' af- ter school program for the first time during the fall activity period. This proved to be a very suc- cessful venture. The class closed with a recital given by the Omaha University Orchesis Dance Group. Z 1124 'lubrrsnts if iw, fbi! f 322 .Elf ,V iz ., ua.. I W...-1 Left to right: Martin, King. There were more than 40 girls who signed up for this G.A.A. sponsored sport. Mrs. Burdette Norton headed the play and was very pleased with the girls' turnout. The usual argument with the umpire is shown here during softball practice. Starlift The annual Starlift Talent Show production put on by a cast of over 200 students was presented April 8 and 9.
