E31 Carl B. Palmquist, Principal II43 On Reaching Your Goal ONGRATULATIONS, graduates of the June class of 1953! The facts disclose that only one out of every two pupils of your age who should have graduated from high school this June has reached the goal. Why have you suc- ceeded and others failed? The answer lies primarily in your own personality. As you traveled along the four-year high school stretch on the highway of life, the traffic lights shone green because you, and others who are interested in you, your parents, your teachers, and friends, put forth effort to keep the way open. There were a few times when others carried more of the burden than you did. Among those who have failed to reach this milestone, however, are many who have thought to rely almost entirely on others. Theirs was a foolish view, they are left behind. Now as graduates, you leave Technical High School to continue along the highway of life. It is my wish that you attain as a reward a happy, successful life. Your principal, CARL. B. PALMQUIST If I Z, Louis J. Adolphsen, Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys E61 PRINCIPAL CARL B. These are the precepts to which we subscribe: We shall be a loyal group for we shall speak well of our school, our city and our country. We shall be a friendly group, respecting our fellow students without regard to race, color, or religious belief. We shall be a responsible group for we shall take care of our fine building and equipment for those who will come after us. We shall'be a courfeous group, we shall respect the rights of others in our halls and en route to school, whether it be on foot or on a public conveyance. We shall be a law-abiding group, for we know that rules are made to preserve our freedom, not to shackle it. We shall be a to-operafive group by taking part in, or supporting, our various activities, by remembering to be sportsmanlike in victory and defeat, and by giving of our time and resources to worthwhile projects. We shall be a businesslike group for school, at the moment, is our business. We shall be prompt and regular in attendance and we shall strive to learn to the limit of our capabilities, being ever grateful to all who help us. Aware of the investment that our community is making in us and of the fact that Technical is our school by choice, we propose to keep ourselves physically, mentally and morally fit so that we may be able to contribute our share as happy and useful citizens of a democracy. llll -KWH M Sv ml ' 1. :R X H I ,Ji ff xl' Seniors ff' Q1 ,Vg . .,., c . as, nwfge '15-f.'T, fllsfwg V Yfiffr ' A? Debate has grown new muscles the past year and will take a back seat to no extra-curricular activity at Tech High. The highlight of che season has been the re-birth of the traditional debate clubs. Cogide, Prinar, Senate, and Ec- remmoc are strong and ready to participate in a full program of intra-school speech activity. Next fall should see approximately 120 Tech- nical students competing in debate and indi- vidual speech contests. The squad, predominantly Junior, portended things to come by winning the Central High Invitational Class A debate trophy. Last, Tech High was named the leading NFL chapter in the Nebraska-Kansas district. Pan American Club ! pi Furs: Rxxxxc lwlari Slgxma, Phyllis Riflcm. loanne Placelf. Frieda Naujolraitls. Jerry Ohlman was elected President, Craig Bradbury, Vice President, Lucille Simpson, Secretary, Barbara Fahey, Treasurer, and Betty Black, Sgt. At Arms. The Council sponsored the first school dance of the year and the Christmas dance. One of the main projects was the formation of a Student Commission and the award- ing of the Trojan Award of Merit to students who had given a certain amount of time in service to the school. The Council officially adopted the Trojan as the school emblem and to promote the interest in this sponsored a contest to find the official Trojan head of the school. Decals were also sold by the Council as a part of the promotion. Girls, who were in their chosen fields, were sprinkled with peculiarities, surprises, and tragedies. There has been much to remember . . . New stars were appearing on the scene while the old ones were brightening up. Sports that took place in the fall were: Intermediate Tennis, Beginning and Advance Archery, Volleyball, and Lifesaving. The winter sports were: Basketball, Beginning and advance Badminton, and last but not least, in the Spring, Softball, Beginning and Advance Tennis were in full swing. The only year around sports were Table Tennis and recreational swim. Swim was held on Wednesday night after school, with mixed swim once a month. This has been a successful season in all sports. These sports have been both enter- taining and beneficial to physical education. Girls Tennis .i 'J,. First Row: Arlene Hrbek, Mildred Munson. Volleyball All girls interested in volley ball reported to the gym to take part in the fall volley ball tournament the last of September. After a brief period of practice, seven teams were organized and captains elected. A Round- Robin tourney was run-each team play- ing every other team twice. The games were all good with Well matched teams and close scores. When the final tally of wins, ties, and losses were figured, the Morans, a freshman team captained by Marlene Gottula, was the winner of the tournament. Dutch White completed his 40th year of a great and colorful cc-ching career with the end of the 1952 football season. Dutch's charges finished their campaign with 3-3-1 record. Although this was no league winner, it was a great improvement over the past two seasons. Bob Anderson, who doubles as wrestling tutor, helped Dutch guide the inex- perienced Trojans to a .500 season. The powerful Jack Hansen and slippery Leonard Hudgins provided the fans with many thrills when they broke away for long gains. Defensive standouts were Herbie Davis, Bob Sokol, Sam Amato, and Dick Mackie. Herbie Davis was chosen by WOW-TV to its all-city team at guard position. Recognized as one of the better high school basketball coaches in Nebraska, Neal Mosser has brought the round-ball sport to a new all-time high at Tech High. When Coach Mosser first came to Tech five years ago, the Maroons were snugly nestled in the lower division of the League. Mosser then took the boys in hand and sent them skyrocketing to the top half of the standings. The following season the crew captured the loop crown, and for the first time in 26 years took their first trip to the state tournament. The Trojans have had equally fine seasons since, but the breaks have kept them from winning the big prize. 51071 STATE CHAM S Wrestlin Patterson, Sokol, Anderson, Farris, Corner. A Tech wrestling team, figured to offer no competition, walked off with the first wrestling title a Trojan team has enjoyed since 1938. Not content with any small title, Bob Anderson's grapplers packed away the biggest mat prize of the season, the State Championship. The Trojans edged out a strong Central crew. The Eagles finished the regular season undefeated, but the Trojans had it in the big test. Anderson placed four boys in the finals of the meet, three coming out victorious - Bob Sokol, Dean Corner, and Lloyd Farris. ' Bob Sokol finishing three years of wrestling, reached his peak in the tournament and walked away with top honors. Dean Corner has one year left after winning two state crowns for himself. Lloyd Farris, younger brother of Lynn, a former State Champ, is a Sophomore and is looking for more honors to add to his state crown. Rich Staffacher, the only matman to go the whole season undefeated, was edged out in the finals. Ralph Patterson, fourth in finals, was edged out by Schoonover of North. Dean Corner and Rich Staffacher were elected next years co-captains. 51081 rg. This year's swim team includes eight lettermen and nine reserve lettermen. The outstanding membrs were Bill Livingston in the 100 yard free style, Don Wells in the 200 yard free style, Mike Shinrock and Bill Tagney in the diving. This season was more successful than the win-loss record shows. Several meets were Won or lost in the last relay. A disqualification in the last relay in the State meet slipped the team to fourth place behind Hastings. Looking at the number of freshmen, and sophomores, the team should be stronger in the next few years. 51113 W f 2' I I I r -, f 'yf ' Q flf 'X X ' 'L T 'W' X , . : s 11452.19 - 'J 4 14442: ' ' 6 - ,..,... if J .f-Av' A-fAiJ v.f ' -Avhf ncz,0Sf7OZfS X 'N Z' VMS, .4.4-., W .
