Omaha Technical High School is a general and comprehensive high school. Technical offers a com- plete range of academic -work. Exceptionally well equipped shops and home economics laboratories provide for a wide variety of courses. The basic subjects and sequences are required for graduation as they are in all high schools. Omaha Technical High School is fully accredited by the state university, and is also a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Graduates may enter any college in the coun- try by selecting the proper electives, and by keeping and maintaining high standands of work. Average school enrollment during recent years has been 2,300. Athletically speaking, it is the state's largest with 1,500 boys. The school's physical plant covers a three-square-block area at Thirty-third and Cuming Streets. f25ecZicaZion The staff of the 1952 Reflector, on behalf of the student body of Omaha Technical High School, dedicate this yearbook to retiring vice-principal, Mr. Chester G. Linn, for his untiring efforts toward the betterment of this school during the many generations since 1910. , r ,M 0 .QQ . , V' 1 ,- xx f W, C, Y -- Ax ,ff 1 'x x ' . W, ' , . , ,f . Mr. DeBoer assumed the responsibili- ties of athletic director during the first semester absence of Mr. Linn. Scheduling, athletes' insurance, ln- tercity League rules and the school's athletic facilities all fall under the jurisdiction of these two. Affairs of state are being dis- cussed by Assistant Principal Louis Adolphson and Principal Carl Palm- quist. Caught in the usual routine of daily conferences they may be probing Tech's administrative prob- lems, recommending a student to a specialized college, or putting the final approval on the night school schedule. All in a day's work for Tech's top executives. MMM . . . Smell that coffee . . . Perhaps 1952 will count as a milestone in your life-or it may simply recall a nightmare that was your lirst English test. For some of you the school will always mean the excitement of new worlds to conquer. For others, it has been the focal point of that desire to know. What do you remember? A basketball game? A bit of philosophy from a favorite teach- er? People? Saturday night dances? Maybe for you Tech is all of those things-for you learned that knowledge, and truth, and even wisdom, pop up at the darndest times and in the darndest places. You see, it doesn't matterg it doesn't matter whether you drove an ancient car to school, or walked five blocks to see the senior playg it doesn't matter that you carried papers and the fellow sitting next to you in Social Studies lived across town. The physical aspects don't matter-because you shared an ex- perience, and yet that experience was, in another way, just your own and no one else's. That's why this book, the REFLECTOR of 1952, is only an image of Omaha Technical High School with its 2,200 students and two-block-long campus. If you are one of the lucky ones, you have felt the heartbeat of the real Tech High: you know its prejudices and ideals, the direction of its pattern. You realize that beneath the surface of routine and red tape and protocol, lies greatness. But, as we said, this book can show only that surface, only the image. It cannot reproduce, it can only reflect your school, for even though your life here forms a part of the image, yet the reality is deep within each of you. So all we can hope is that in looking through the 1952 REFLECTOR, you will feel the urge to reach back and beyond the reflection to touch that reality-the reality that is Omaha Technical High School, All for each and each for all, f :W ff - 4. CBENSON 75 The only bright spot in an otherwise drab and win-less season was Tech's 7-7 tie with the Benson Bunnies early in October. The Maroon tally, the first in three games, came in the third stanza on the kick- off. Scatback Haskell Lee gathered in the ball and razed 97 yards to score. Captain Bob Gloden converted the extra point. ' Benson's only score came from the famed spread-formation on a 26-yard scoot by Jack Brandt. And Brandt also kicked the all-important extra point. That wasn't all the scoring, however. Tech's Charlie Corbin broke through center for a 42-yard gallop only to have the TD called back on an off-side penalty. RESERVE UNNERS-UP IN 'Sl Points were precious to Coach Bob Anderson in his initial season as assistant football coach. Ander- son's reserve squad was the team to beat all during the rugged season. But Omaha Benson caught his eleven at a weak moment in the closing game of the year. And the Intei-city League cliampionsliip went to Omaha Central by default by virtue of a 6-0 Benson victory. Standouts for the reserve gridders were Roland Russell, Dick Mackie, Dick Carr, Jim Andrews, Frank Rule, Don Maclvlaliill and Rex Hill. At mid-season Negro scatback Haskell Lee went into varsity togs by virtue of his sterling play on the reserve squad in early games. The frosh gridders, under the tutelage of Neal Mossel' for the past three years, had a 23-gaine victory string snapped hy Omaha North yearlingsf The winning habit stretched all the way back to the days when Dutch White was the frosh mentor. It was Mosser's initial loss since he took up the coaching reins on the gridiron. His record was marred by three ties in this three-year period. The Omaha North win gave the Vikings the lntercity League championship. The game, a hotly Contested classic, was not de- cided until the final gun. Tech came out on the short end of a 7-6 decision. The half ended as the Lil' Maroons pushed Within one yard of North's goal. Injuries were stumbling blocks all season for Ken Kennedy's gridiron charges. Here's an on-the- spot picture of Gordon Dunn just after he sustained a head injury in one of the seasons bruising con- tests. He recovered. Missouri Valley Title to Tech Championship honors went to the 1951-1952 Omaha Tech basketball entry in the Missouri Valley League. The Maroons' title bid came during the Iinal year of the circuit's life. Re-scheduling of Omaha teams has forced extinction of the once-powerful Missouri Valley League. Tech's record of six victories against a single set-back was the top cage record against conference foes. Lincoln Central finished second with a 5-1 record. Both the Omaha World-Herald and the Council Bluffs Nonpareil named Glen to the first team. Ball-handling Bob Gibson regis- ters surprise for the photographer during the Hastings trip. The Maroous upset the tough out-state club, 67-57, and Brother Gibson's grasp on the round-ball was a de- ciding factor. No, he's not a flat- head . . . that's the photographers fault! The Reserves' 11-3 record in circuit play fell short of Benson's 9-2 record in Iinal standings. The Maroon Reserves played a double round-robin with every team in the loop, losing only to Benson Ctwicel and Central. Sophomore Jack Hansen was named the team's most valuable player by his teammates at the conclusion of the season. Hansen, playing his second year on the reserve squad, received a plaque donated by Coach Berg for his outstanding play. Many fine team performances were sprinkled through the season with one of the high points coming against Abe Lynx on the Tech maples. The Reserves held a usually potent, fast-breaking Lynx quintet to only three baskets in the entire contest and limited the Council Bluffs club to six free tosses in the opening half. Tech won easily, 29-19. Some sort of a record in futility was set during the cage season. Berg's maplemen missed over 200 chances at the charity line in 16 contests! This weakness was one of the direct causes for the team's trio of setbacks, Outstanding players on the 1951-1952 squad included Norman Lastovica, Russell Cook, Jack Han- sen, Donald Russell, Frank Rule, Bob Bass, Tom Peterson and Merle Boite. He's a good floor man, a driver and a Hue leader, said Kennedy when speaking of Jack Hamilton. Swish! A Tech basket is regis- tered against Fremont and the tally was caught by this unusual shot. A year of sports has ended. This dynasty of athletes cavorting in their chosen Helds was sprinkled with comebacks, peculiarities, surprise and tragedy. There has been much to remember . . . Recollections of football recall early season despairs, mid-season mediocrities and oc- casional flashes of brilliance in the closing games. Basketball-There are memories. Another successful season was marred only by rough treatment in Lincoln. In the state tournament, against an inspired Fremont team, the three deities of fate, Clotho-, Lachesis and Atropos according to mythology, but in this case Faris, Neff and Donohoue, once again stepped in, and this time their entrance was fatal. The Maroons were tumbled in their second successive state tournament outing. It took fine team play, inspiration and ill luck to do it. Not to be shunned in the memory parade is wrestling, for rnemorics play no favorites. Skillful Maroon matmen won their share of individual honors, but overall strength and dame luck prevented more grappling plums. The swimmers, too, carved a niche in the athletic memories. Competing against the state's Hashiest tankers, the Tech splashers, a bit shy on skill, were long on guts and showed well. Spring, as in other years, brought track. A valiant band of thinclads provided gay memories of warm afternoons and stunning victories. An inch more in the broadjump, a quicker exchange in the relays, and things might have been different. But meets aren't won on might-have-beens. And the guiding light for the cindermen was Dutch White, the perennial molder of tomorrow's men. Slow paced, slightly bent forward, a man who loves boys and athletics, is Dutch White . . . a man with a voice calloused and hardened by years of summoning athletes on the Held. Dutch White will always be remembered as a gray-haired believer in the rock-'em-and-sock-'em', theory who was ever alert for a possible sprinter or a man in the weights, and always surprised to find that this boy or that boy isn't out for track. The annual staff, bound by printing deadlines, was unable to give track any picture coverage. And for this reason the staff members-joined by the many generations of ath- letes who were products of the ole Dutchman-would like to pay tribute to Dutch White by printing this typical pose. . . V. Mvh SWEET, NEW YORK IE, N Y, Certainly worthy of being included among the activities of the past school year are these picture reports of a mid-year robbery at Tech High School. The photograph at the upper left shows pieces of the combination lock, damaged beyond repair. A hand points to the safe handle and fingerprint powder used by investigating officers. A considerable sum of money was taken, but the culprits were later captured. This comic one dollar bill was just one of the many tricks en- joyed by Tech students at a first semester activity number featuring George Jason in a fun-filled hour of mirth, music and magic. Larry Jones moved into the television limelight this year as he was starred on his own Country Store program on KMTV. Larry'S 12:15 show featured request numbers ranging from cowboy ballads to popular song hits. '7fnan.k4Zo.i..
