A true friend of books faculty members and students thats Mrs Agnes Nilsson Head librarian of O30 she has completed ll years of the work she enioys most working with books and young people Mrs Nilsson attended the Universities f Omaha and Nebraska and is doing gradu ate work now at the University of Omaha She is always willing to participate in any activity which promotes a love of America as her work on the Patriotic committee proves Rose can you help me? So everyone asks Miss Rose Ostronlc who in 28 years as the school secretary has accumulated a vol ume of knowledge and experience which would be hard to equal and upon which the staff relies without question Miss Ostronic is capable of solving almost any problem concerning North High She is a member of the Auditorium and Stage com mittee What little spare time she has is spent in reading Shouldering the problems of the publica tion of the North Star and the Norseman is one of the iobs of Mrs Ellen Pearey She also teaches world history and serves as chairman of the Homecoming and Pa triotic committees Her daughter a new niece writing and ice skating give her pleasure in her leisure time She received her Master of Arts degree from Creighton University and will continue her studies this summer in history at the University of Minnesota In a chess game each pawn moves straight forward one square at a time as David K Petersen well knows as sponsor of the Chess club He has employed the same technique in building up the interest and activities of the boys in Hi Y As a mathe matics teacher he has little difficulty n keeping track of trumps in his favorite game of bridge Mr Petersen received his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics at the University of Omaha Mrs Helen Plamondon s English classes are some of the most interesting conducted in the school Her pleasant personality makes her a favorite of many students Her edu cation and training are as broad as her main interest traveling In the past year she has been to California Louisiana Florida and Colorado Her hobbies include reading the theater and good music. A a member of the Patriotic committee she is vitally interested in promoting the demo- cratic ideals of America, A kind and understanding teacher are the best words to describe Miss Maude Poley. She was a member of the first faculty when the school opened in 1924. Her stimulating American history classes are always filled to capacity. As freshman counsellor for boys Miss Poley guides them through the problems of that first trying year in high school. Her hobby is traveling. The 'call of the open road has taken her across the United States several times. 162 QW Miss Alice V Porterfreld received her Bache lor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin She has devoted many hours to encouraging scholarship as an ideal among her students Her establishment of the S300 Herbert and Mabel Porterfield Memorial Award in l947 to be given each year to the graduate with the highest average is an incentive to many to strive for scholarship As a teacher of English she naturally pursues a leisure activity akin to her work reading Forward march' is the command issued by Master Sergeant William H Roberson which the ROTC battalion has followed in its growth this year Sergeant Roberson served in China Japan and Korea before returning to the United States in October l95l He was assigned to North High in January i952 Since that time he gra ciously has made his services and those of the battalion available for any activity or interest Her petite figure is no measure of Miss Nona Robinsons administrative ability for as head of the English department she handles that task with ease and efficiency Always interested in public speaking at one time she was the debate coach and now is sponsor of Glaciers a girls discus sion group She also serves on the Board of Control and the North Star Board Music is Miss Robinson s special interest She re ceived her M A degree at Northwestern As a newcomer to the English department this year Miss Marguerite Robison soon made herself popular with the faculty and students She was initiated into club activi ties as a Red Cross sponsor She taught previously at the University of Maryland and also in Beatrice and Grand Island Nebraska high schools Miss Robison at tended Penn State Teachers college and received her Masters degree at the Uni versity of Colorado She enioys reading and meandering through art museums In iust one year Miss Marrorre Scheerger has become a loyal Viking and a capable assistant in the office Through an aunts persuasion she came to Omaha from Bat tle Creek Nebraska to attend Van Sants Business School which recommended her for her pre ent position Miss Scheergers prettiness pleasant disposition and interest in the school's activities have made her a popular member of the staff. The beauty of any vocal solo or choral number can be enhanced by a good ac- companist. The talented fingers of Mrs. Frieda Schroeder have accompanied North High vocalists for the past two years. A graduate of the Cleveland School of Mu- sic, Mrs. Schroeder has also spent several summers at the Baldwin Wallace college. She has served as organist and choir direc- tor for several Omaha churches as well as accompanist in the music studios of Mary Munchhoff and Fred Ellis.

Whether its an intricate tap step a back handed serve on the tennis court o a sight for a bulls eye on the rifle range Mrs Ruth B Seely can c emonstrate how to do it Besides teaching physical education and dancing classes she also serves on the Activities Aurora Girls Athletic Board Health and Military Ball commit tees Her personal interest in her students and her sparkling personality make her a favorite teacher Her hobbies include dancing bowling and traveling He may he soft spoken but he is per uasive so soy students of Charles E Severyn as he clears the halls after school A teacher in the mathematics department he is probably best known for the interest he shows in the scholarship of his stu dents His committee work includes Hand ling of Crowds Scholarship and Honors and U hering A former coach Mr Severyn still shows his interest in the soorts pro gram He is a gra uate of the University of Nebra ka A good book is a good friend' This is the advice that Mrs Elmo Simpson tries to pass on to everyone who enters a North high library As head librarian her energies are directed toward efficiently operating the library and providing the best in classical and current reading ma terial Mrs Simpson received her degree in library science from Columbia Univer sity Devoted to good music and drama she also loves the out of doors Keep the pink sheet on top is the per sistent admonition of Harvey A Smith to anyone making out a request for school funds Mr Smith has been chool treas urer for l9 years Teaching and coach in fo 37 years he has spent 28 of them at North He is the head of the Visual Aid department and a teacher of commercial arithmetic He serves on tne Board of Control and the Military ball committee He attended Nebraska Wes Ieyan and the Univers ty of Nebraska With a twinkle in her eye and a straight face Miss Foy Southwell has a subtle sen e of humor which at times can be discon certing to her students. Her English clas-es have been entertained by tales of her be- loved cocker which are unequaled by any- thing in print. Her serious illne-s first se- mester brought worried looks to her friends, but her return was gay-spirited and ac- companied by a new interest in and cr'- tical attitude toward television programs which she developed during her convales- cence. As 0 member of the Student Council com- mittee Edward Stech lias become a familiar figure as he maintains order and neatness in the cafeteria during lunch, Flash bulbs, cameras, and assignments are well-known to him as he directs the activities of 70 Shutterbugs. A graduate of the Univer- sity of Omaha, he teaches social science and world history. Outside of school he is state treasurer of Alpha Phi Omega and an Explorer Scout leader. These are the yearly worries of Mrs Louise Sutton as she supervises the Aurora She also serves on the Courtesy committee is o senior class sponsor and counsels senior girls In coniunction with her Spanish classes she is sponsor of El Polo del Norte Mrs Sut ton is president of Nebraskas Modern Language Teachers Association She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Whether it s a classical concerto or a popu lar iazz tune Sam F Thomas can find the right instrument and the music student to play it He teaches the beginning IUDIOY and senior bands and orchestras as well as a harmony class The success of the Fall Follies the Aurora and football half time programs depends to a large extent o this man Mr Thomas received his Ma ter of Science degree at the University be found with his family ishing on som quiet lake Mwst of Omaha During the summer he p to con teaching is the answ Miss Marilyn Vingers has given to ques tions asked her since the announcement of her engagement this year Her chic wardrobe and her role as an Ak Sar Ben princess have made her a real princess to the 300 girls in YTeens she helps sponsor Miss Vingers teaches social science and world history She poined the faculty in January l952 She was an honor grad uate of the University of Nebraska A model a piece of cloth a needle and thread combined with Miss Florence Wal kers talent for designing produce many costumes for Fall Follies and Aurora cast member Miss Walker heads the com mittee in charge of making designing and caring for costumes used in North stage productions, Students in her home- making classes have also discovered her flair for preparing delicious dishes. Miss Zdenka Sedlacek teaches English, but tinged with a love and appreciation of nature and its beauty. Heading the list of her special qualities is her unique in- terest in flowers and plants of all kinds. Her room on the second floor is gay with the blossoms and foliage of numerous plants.
