Viewed from the dir, North is seen in the shape of on E . The main holl contoins oll the regulor classrooms. The middle division houses the cafeteria ond other specialized rooms, such os science ond homemoking. The north branch of the E forms the auditorium, while the gymnasium occupies the south oreo. .fdf Word My .SZAOOK The plan of the building symbolizes Excel- lence , a term which is echoed in every phase of North High School activity. Through the years, North has steadily en- larged and improved its facilities to benefit its growing enrollment. Plans for the future include fluorescent lights and a new paint job for every room. North will also boast a new and larger art room, greatly improved ROTC facilities, a new homemaking room, a new music room, a uni- form-drying enclosure in the boys' locker room, and another gymnasium. Other ideas include a parking lot on the south side of the building, a room for the dramatics classes, and new curtains for the stage. As these dreams become realities, North Omahans can point to their fine school with a growing feeling of pride. North High has developed as the community has developed. lt has served North Omaha as North Omaha has served it. And whether the landscape is bright with lilacs and bridal wreath, or glistening under a blanket of snow, North High School always presents a pretty picture. fl Z? This year's Girls' Glee , according to Miss Cowman, 'is probably the most perfectly bal- anced of any of the choral groups at Norht. Girls may advance from Junior Glee to Senior Glee by acquiring a high grade on a series of tests on proper tone production, technique, and intonation. From the advanced group, the girls may go into choir. ln the Christmas program, several mem- bers of the glee classes participated in the all- girl number, Ceremony of the Carols , by Benjamin Britton. Also, some ofthe outstand- ing singers attended the All-City High School Music Festival and Clinic. The girls' group performed for the patriotic program on May 30. ln the Spring Concert, they sang the Angels' Chorus from Gothe's Faust by Franz Schubert. 38 J, 5 if Margie Salvatori, Donna Stull, Jean Fox, Betty Menard, Wilma Hamilton, Leila Rormhals, Dee Ann Gunderson, First row: Joyce Peck, Barbara Blumenschein, Shirley Holben, Marebell Staples Terry Stroud, Joan Dewey, Dotty Jo Sage, Jean Rowden, Carol Bovier, Kathryn Hamer, Christine Knispel. yoecia Azea! Mcafjaining The first thing done in these classes is to test voices to determine the part each student should sing. After this is done, work is begun on breath control, tone projection, and sight reading. Each day the singers take certain exercises which are designed to improve the quality of their voices. Another important part of their work is memorization. ln addition to improving students' voices, the glee classes give them a great deal of poise and self confidence. This year the importance of facial expressions and gestures were again stressed. Since Miss Cowman's arrival at North three years ago, she has done much to build up the enrollment in the vocal music department. She now has in effect a program whereby a person cannot enter choir without first taking at least one year of glee or passing several stiff vocal tests, consisting of ability to read music, tone quality, pitch, and intonation. The Boys' Glee class has concentrated more this year on vocal training and preparation for choir work than on music for outside events. Miss Cowman has stated, My present aim is to build up the boys' section in the vocal music department. mn' 99 'gfswa ,se G RLS GL E Back row Susue Garru on Mar ha Haley Marulyn Nluepmann Mary Lou Muller Shurley Tuetsort Anuta McGlynn Paul ne l-'ron Connue Morrow Charlene Menard Sharon Lund Carla Ruchardson Esther Merrruan Second row Duana Alger Arlene Beer Aluce Warruor Jeanette Robb Karen Anderson Marulyn Cyan Barbara Henry Nancy Atkunson Nadune Carsey Margaret Johnson Sharon Jackson Sandra Rohlts Furst row Mary Lou Fousey Madelyn Martus Smuth Joan Smvser Jane Stoneburg Barbara Stewart Barbara Puerce Joyce Bennett Betty Provaznuk Jacquelune Bolton Jeanette Caun Rose Caun Beverly Muff Z? The Norsemen showed strong tirst halt power as Bill Engelhardt led the scorers with two touch- downs on two long range plays. Don Winter added the other two counters, The Vikings' main opposition came from the Islanders' Larry Gay and Orville Clanton. For North, Bill Steck, Winter, Carl Dobney, and Marvin Nev- ins played headsfup football. Viking standouts were Engelhardt, Steck, and Terry Cochran. Al Italia and Rosenwald Alexander stood out tor Tech. Creighton Prep-I 8-O One of the worst games ot the season as tar as playing conditions were concerned was against Prep. The field throughout the game was a quagmire ot mud, but this did not stop the Vikes from winning, lB-O, in pouring rain. Bill Engelhardt scored all three touchdowns, one on a 75-yard run. ln the second half, Coaches Gost and Nelson ordered the Vikes to play strictly defensive football. Wilbur Huston and Tom Carl played stellar games tor North. Thomas Jefferson-20-I2 An annual mid-season slump hampered the Viking attack in their game with Thomas Jet- terson. The keyed-up Yellowjackets played one ot their best games of the season, holding the Vikes to a 20-l2 conquest, Bill Steck, Bill Engelhardt, and Phil Sodaro scored the touch- downs. Tom Carl's 76-yard scamper to the one yard line set up the second North touchdown. The chief thorns in the Vikings' sides were Bud Evans, Joe Paulson, and Bill Petit. The Vikings were no match for the keyed-up Links, who shredded North's line with powerful drives. Don Winter was the main offensive weapon the Vikes had to offer, but lack of steady blocking kept him at the minimum of effectiveness. This game decided the final ratings of the State, with North a close second to Lincoln for the second straight year. Vikes Nevins and May form blockade for Lincoln runner, North lost important tilt, 39-l3. Dan Winter few running plays against Benson Charles Dresher Benson-34-13 A new passing mark was set in this wide open aerial game that ended in a Viking tri- umph, 34-l3. Benson tried 32 passes against the injury-ridden North squad. l-loward Graves, Bill Engelhardt, Bill Steck, and Don Winter scored touchdowns. J ecwon A !Qf0m1I5ing Ar Sowing cgioorb g:fLfA1fwia5If5 With one of the most abundant turnouts at North in recent years, over 200 candidates for the four Viking spring sports, baseball, track, tennis, and golf, have started pre-sea- son practices. The most promising outlook is baseball, where Coach Carol Gast will build his team around eight returning lettermen from last year's lntercity Champions. The Vikes will receive a strong test of their predicted strength in the season's opener when they go against Lincoln Central, last year's state champs. The team has set its sights high this year and is aiming for an undefeated season, lf they are successful, it will be the first un- blemished season in the history of the Inter- city League. Lack of experienced boys in the field events could prove to be the Viking cindermen's down- fall in the coming season. Much of the squad's success will depend on the development of the inexperienced weight men. However, Coach Spec Nelson has an ample supply of runners from last season, and the team should win their share of meets. Golf and tennis advocates have hopes for successful seasons this year. Although both sports are considered as minor at North, more interest has been taken in the recent years. This is due mainly to the improved coaching and well-balanced program. Although only three veterans are returning from the l95l team, the tennis situation is just as bright and Coach Floyd Chase hopes the net men can improve last year's standing when they finished in the runner-up position in the city tournament. Coach Chase is also introducing a round robin tournament, in hopes of raising more interest in the net sports. 4 lf- ' 5 .
