Student Journalists Serve In Varied Ways Journalism students spent most of their time and energy in the publication of the bi-weekly North Star and the yearbook, The Norseman. Other activities also attracted their attention and ability during the past year. Popularity polls were conducted by the North Star to determine the Mosts and Bests among the january and june graduating classes. Foot- ball programs for the Fremont, Central, and South football games were published and dis- tributed free of charge to the students by the North Star staff. Members of the journalism I class compiled complete basketball and football records for the past 24 years. Copies of the records were presented to the athletic department. Ann Pot- ter and Dorothy Smiley served as correspondents for the Wcvrld-Herald by keeping the newspaper informed of North Highls activities. Members of the North Star staff also served as guest edi- torial writers for Kermit Hansenls Youth Ac- tivities column. The school paper received 'lhonorable men- tion in a Book Week contest conducted by Quill and Scroll. The award was a book to add to the journalism departments library. Eighteen journalism students attended the Nebraska High School Press Association meet- ing at Lincoln, Nebraska, October 51 and No- vember l. They were accompanied by their adviser, Mrs. Ellen Pearey. Contests sponsored by the University of Nebraska were entered by Nina McEwen, Jeannette Renner, Keith Scher- merhorn, Ann Potter, Gordon Shafer, Patricia Palmquist, and jean Jackson. Mark Gautier and Charles Geisler were speakers on two conven- tion panel discussions. Initiates into Quill and Scroll, international journalism honor society, numbered 20 during the year. Each new member had published at least lOO column inches, ranked in the upper third of his class scholastically, and rated supe- rior in journalism work.
