In the spring, as nominees of various clubs, they are elected by the entire school. In the winter, as candidates of their classes, the members are elected only by the class to which they belong. These honored gold button mem- bers meet every two weeks on Monday after school to discuss their duties which consist mainly of supervising the commission mem- bers and of taking an active part in the govern- ment of the school. Upon recommendations of teachers, 88 boys and girls have served on the blue button Stu- dent Commission this year. Unlike the Student Council, the Commission members fill out ap- plication blanks. Teachers put their signatures, the students grade to date, and remarks on these membership blanks. If the applicant has a satisfactory mark and a 2 average, he is eligible for membership on the Commission. The vari- ous duties of the members include supervising the lunch lines, managing students in the cafe- teria, keeping the halls orderly throughout the school, and assisting the nurse, the librarians, and the absence checkers. Both the Commission and the Council are under the supervision and sponsorship of Miss Alice B. Crocker. Three dances have been sponsored by these organizations this year. They were the Christ- mas Bell Dance, the Leap Year Swing, and the Spring Square Dance. The main activity spon- sored by the Council and the Commission, how- ever, was the Courtesy Campaign. It was car- ried on at North High with the co-operation of the library and the English, art, and social science departments. North High school believes in student gov- ernment, and the students have proved them- selves capable of carrying the responsibility.

Full Calendar Keeps ROTC Busy This year has been a busy year for the North High military department. The activities of the North High ROTC battalion have been many, from marching in the free bridge celebration to sending the rifle team to Missouri for the national tournament. As usual the ROTC cadets ushered at foot- ball games and the ROTC band played. The big event of the season was the thir- teenth annual military ball at Peony Park on February 27. Much time was spent in readying the decorations and preparing for the grand march. Twenty-seven officers and their ladies marched to the strains of Web Feiermans orchestra. Richard Bruner was named lieutenant colo- nel and commander of North Highs battalion. He also received the Judd Crocker Award. A new battalion position of public relations of- hcer was filled by Robert Henkel. james Klein was announced as the outstanding sophomore cadet and presented with the American Le- gion Merit Badge. The crack squad performed and the band played preceding the grand march. The rifle team won the Tri-State Invitational Tournament at Central High in February and then went to Boonville, Missouri, March 5 and 6 for the national tournament, where they placed fourth. The ROTC can thank Sgt. Cecil D. Land for the fine organization and many improve- ments in the battalion and its headquarters made this year. LT. COL. BRUNER AND JUNE WILLIAMS W?
