The N orseman 1 948 NGRTH HIGH SCHOOL 1 OMAHA, NEBRASKA The Norseman published by the journalism department for the students of North High School edited by -Ioan Fowler NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIG Each fall as the students enroll in North High for a new year's work, they sign and fill out the first of a seemingly endless number of printed forms. Sharpened pencils, fountain pens, inks, blotters, and teachers' name stamps are essen- tial to a successful opening of school. Through- out the year each student's program of study and his activities are arranged and directed through nearly fifty kinds of printed cards and slips. Every student of North High School will remember these printed passports to knowledge and pleasure. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS JANUARY SENIORS JUNE SENIORS I9 .... An ardent supporter of all student activities, Mr. Burkholder is seen at all sporting events. Sometimes reluctantly, trouble- making students spend time after school with Mr. Burkholder's assistance. Helen E. Robinson is known well by all North students. She is dean of girls and also a mathematics teacher. Many graduating senior girls are aided by friendly conferences with her in reference to their futures. Girls seeking help- ful guidance will always find her willing to aid them in any way possible. Henry C. Meents will long be remembered by the graduating seniors of North High. As principal, his winning personality and friendly understanding make him popular with the stu- dents whether he is administering discipline, attending to school business, or pinch-hitting for an absent teacher. In the spring, as nominees of various clubs, they are elected by the entire school. In the winter, as candidates of their classes, the members are elected only by the class to which they belong. These honored gold button mem- bers meet every two weeks on Monday after school to discuss their duties which consist mainly of supervising the commission mem- bers and of taking an active part in the govern- ment of the school. Upon recommendations of teachers, 88 boys and girls have served on the blue button Stu- dent Commission this year. Unlike the Student Council, the Commission members fill out ap- plication blanks. Teachers put their signatures, the students grade to date, and remarks on these membership blanks. If the applicant has a satisfactory mark and a 2 average, he is eligible for membership on the Commission. The vari- ous duties of the members include supervising the lunch lines, managing students in the cafe- teria, keeping the halls orderly throughout the school, and assisting the nurse, the librarians, and the absence checkers. Both the Commission and the Council are under the supervision and sponsorship of Miss Alice B. Crocker. Three dances have been sponsored by these organizations this year. They were the Christ- mas Bell Dance, the Leap Year Swing, and the Spring Square Dance. The main activity spon- sored by the Council and the Commission, how- ever, was the Courtesy Campaign. It was car- ried on at North High with the co-operation of the library and the English, art, and social science departments. North High school believes in student gov- ernment, and the students have proved them- selves capable of carrying the responsibility. Full Calendar Keeps ROTC Busy This year has been a busy year for the North High military department. The activities of the North High ROTC battalion have been many, from marching in the free bridge celebration to sending the rifle team to Missouri for the national tournament. As usual the ROTC cadets ushered at foot- ball games and the ROTC band played. The big event of the season was the thir- teenth annual military ball at Peony Park on February 27. Much time was spent in readying the decorations and preparing for the grand march. Twenty-seven officers and their ladies marched to the strains of Web Feiermans orchestra. Richard Bruner was named lieutenant colo- nel and commander of North Highs battalion. He also received the Judd Crocker Award. A new battalion position of public relations of- hcer was filled by Robert Henkel. james Klein was announced as the outstanding sophomore cadet and presented with the American Le- gion Merit Badge. The crack squad performed and the band played preceding the grand march. The rifle team won the Tri-State Invitational Tournament at Central High in February and then went to Boonville, Missouri, March 5 and 6 for the national tournament, where they placed fourth. The ROTC can thank Sgt. Cecil D. Land for the fine organization and many improve- ments in the battalion and its headquarters made this year. LT. COL. BRUNER AND JUNE WILLIAMS W? Under Director Samuel F. Thomas, the tal- ents of the senior orchestra, the senior band, the ROTC band, and the dance orchestra were outstanding in all of their many performances. Decked out in their new blue and gold uni- forms, the band opened their year's activities in September by representing Omaha at the State Fair in Lincoln. Several weeks later theatres showed newsreels of the band in the Ak-Sar- Ben and South Omaha free bridge parade. Towering John Kuhn as drum major drew eyes in his new uniform and white fur drum tnajor's hat. Seventy-two band uniforms and costumes for the baton twirlers were financed by the P.-T.A. and North Omaha businessmen. Violinist Beverly Houser was chosen concert mistress for the second year at the State Music Clinic in the fall. The highest rating instru- mentalists attended the State Music Contest later at Fremont, Nebraska. Beverly was also chosen concert mistress of the All-City High School Symphony and elected its president. The ROTC band opened the thirteenth an- nual military ball with a thirty minute pro- gram. Their other performance was reviewed at Federal inspection this spring. The sweet strains of North's dance band were heard at several school dances in the gym. Their noteworthy showings in the Aurora and the Best Show were fine examples of what can be done by young musicians. Football games, the senior play, and the Christmas concerts were augmented by the se- lections of the band and orchestra. New Director Leads Vocal Music In September, Miss Marvella Werner be- came the new head of the vocal music depart- ment and director of the choir. Miss Werner directed vocal music at Pawnee City, Nebraska, before coming to North last fall. Mrs. Mary Silver is the voice teacher and the accompanist for the choir. Under her direction, the soloists prepare for the annual Christmas and spring concerts, music contests, and other musical programs during the year. The choir of l0O voices is the largest group in the vocal department and is under the direc- tion of Miss Werner. This year the Christmas concert was held on December 14 at Joslyn Memorial. The spring concert was presented on May 20 in the school auditorium. These con- certs are presented annually by the choir and the smaller vocal groups. The smaller groups include the Vocal Vikings, a chorus of 48 mem- bers who present the annual Aurora Act, the Vikettes, a group of girls who sing at contests, at the annual concerts, and at special musical programs, the girls' sextetg and the boys, quar- tet. The Aurora Act this year, entitled The Old Look New, was based on the changing fash- ions. Besides their school concerts, these music groups present special programs for various organizations throughout the city. Highlights of the year for the music department are the All State Music Clinic in November and the district, state, and national Music Contests in April and May. Early in the fall the choir received new col- lapsible risers. The risers were bought with the S200 given to them last year by the Concord Club. Student Journalists Serve In Varied Ways Journalism students spent most of their time and energy in the publication of the bi-weekly North Star and the yearbook, The Norseman. Other activities also attracted their attention and ability during the past year. Popularity polls were conducted by the North Star to determine the Mosts and Bests among the january and june graduating classes. Foot- ball programs for the Fremont, Central, and South football games were published and dis- tributed free of charge to the students by the North Star staff. Members of the journalism I class compiled complete basketball and football records for the past 24 years. Copies of the records were presented to the athletic department. Ann Pot- ter and Dorothy Smiley served as correspondents for the Wcvrld-Herald by keeping the newspaper informed of North Highls activities. Members of the North Star staff also served as guest edi- torial writers for Kermit Hansenls Youth Ac- tivities column. The school paper received 'lhonorable men- tion in a Book Week contest conducted by Quill and Scroll. The award was a book to add to the journalism departments library. Eighteen journalism students attended the Nebraska High School Press Association meet- ing at Lincoln, Nebraska, October 51 and No- vember l. They were accompanied by their adviser, Mrs. Ellen Pearey. Contests sponsored by the University of Nebraska were entered by Nina McEwen, Jeannette Renner, Keith Scher- merhorn, Ann Potter, Gordon Shafer, Patricia Palmquist, and jean Jackson. Mark Gautier and Charles Geisler were speakers on two conven- tion panel discussions. Initiates into Quill and Scroll, international journalism honor society, numbered 20 during the year. Each new member had published at least lOO column inches, ranked in the upper third of his class scholastically, and rated supe- rior in journalism work. It is the paper which gives the stu- dent permission to participate in competitive athletics. What fun and physical Htness lie ahead for those with the signed slip-baseball, basket- ball, football, wrestling, tennis, and golf! The activity ticket printed on light green cardboard this year entitled the entire student body to share in an exciting year's athletic program as spectators. Even that Viking spirit which splits the cold night air at a football game or rings from the gym rafters in a hotly contested bas- ketball game finds its inspiration in type, ink, and paper. ...... - .-vmn nn.-Jn ULHUOL Circular Yunlccr M7 lcontinucdl Ilovffwff 6' DMM 6 Q- 5 X ya o mxcmzs nm PLJPILS: NMVQL f 72601 ' ootball: Second Team Gane, Thomas Jeffffreon vs. North Xqbfl Emersiig' L30 his afternoon at l+:OO. The Norsemen started the season by drop- ping their first three games. South handed the Vikes their first setback in the opener with a 6-1 win. Central gave the boys their second lesson to the tune of 8-2. Then Tech's hard hitting Maroons slugged out a 4-1 triumph. The Viking luck changed as the Blue and Gold dumped Prep 3-1. Next came the Benson Bunnies who absorbed a 3-2 drubbing. Tech edged the Vikes 5-4 for the Maroons' second win. With revenge spurring them on. the Vi- kings knocked the South Packers out of the Inter-city league lead with a 2-1 victory. Benson again fell by a 5-2 score as john Leach clubbed home the winning run in the last of the ninth inning. Hank Zich paced the North Siders with his only home run of the season as the Vikings nudged Prep 7-6 in the season's finale. Bob Moscrey, shortstop, Hank Zich, first baseman: and Bob Murray, outfielder, were chosen to represent North on the mythical All-city team. When school was out, thought turned to Le- gion ball, where North was represented by the McFaydens in the junior division, and North Side Bank in the midget leagues. ln the junior league, McFaydens won the city title with only two losses. A 12-11 decision in the finals of the State Tournament went to South who was the runner-up in the city title chase. North Side Bank, in the midget league, suc- cessfully defended its State championship. The North Siders, managed by Bubby Harrison, catcher for the McFaydens, went through their entire season without defeat. Matmen Surprise City Competition The Viking wrestling squad made a hne showing in their second year by winning live matches and losing five. The Vikings also placed second in the state tourney, two points behind South. North placed seven grapplers in the finals, and had three state champs: Jack Davis, 85 pounderg Ralph Nielsen, 136 pounderg and John Gerhardt, 165 pounder. North started the season with a bang by surprising Central, last year's State and City co-champs, 28-22. They piled up a winning streak of three matches by turning back Abra- ham Lincoln 23-22, and Tech 52-14, before be- ing downed by Thomas jefferson 26-14, South 21-15, Central 31-11, and Tech 24-22. However, in the latter four matches, the lineup was studded with reserves as injuries and weight troubles beset varsity men. A valu- VVRESTLING-Back row: Bill Best, Iohn Gerhardt, Bob Nicholso able point-getter, Gilbert Chambers, graduated in January. The Norsemen came back to romp Thomas jefferson 26-14 and Abraham Lincoln 32-9. But again the Packers downed the Vikes 24-12. In the State Tournament the Vikes were squeezed out by a referees decision favoring South, and giving South's Fred Martinez the nod over Sam Carpender. Seven Vikes entered the finals leaving three champs, four runners-up, and three thirds. The runners-up included Perry Leitel, Bob Grau, Sam Carpender, and Bob Nicholson. John Fabian, Ed Baker, and Dick Bernhardt placed third. Ed Baker, Dick Bernhardt, and jerry Wolpa were the only non-letter men on this year's squad. n, Coach Vern Ekfelt. Wjffl 1 Yearlings Pla in Revived League For the Hrst time in several years, the fresh- man football squad competed in an official inter- city league. The Viking yearlings, coached by Kenneth Swanson, ended the 1947 season in third place in the city, winning three of their Hve scheduled games. The young Vikes opened their season with a 7-0 loss to Central, the team that was later to become the league champ. Young Jerry Tan- nahill gave the little Eagles a bad scare when he scampered 46 yards on a dash around end. However, the freshman eleven was not doomed to be the pushover of the league, as they came storming back in their second game to dump a favored Prep squad 19-O. This time fore falling 12-6 in the final quarter. Dale Hauk- land and Pete Rigatuso, the starting fullback and halfback, provided the scores for the Vikes. Hard driving and fast running by Tech's freshman star, Harold Taylor, proved to be the downfall of the freshman squad. The North High lads fell before the offensive machine of the Maroon and White eleven 21-0. Poor de- fensive play on the part of the Norsemen aided the Tech High freshmen in their conquest.. The little Norsemen concluded their season with a bang as they smashed their way to a 19- 0 victory over the supposedly stronger South High eleven. Ekfelt's second team foot- ball squad disposed of all seven of their oppon- ents to take undisputed Hrst place in the Inter- city League. The Vike reserves got off to a fast start by downing the Tech seconds 25-12. Bill Best scored three times to lead the Norseman attack. twice on passes from Bob Moscrey and once on a I2-yard plunge. In their second game, the North seconds breezed past Abqaham Lincoln 28-0. Jack Reddan, Dewey Wade, Dick Krenzien, and Bill Duffack all scored for North with Moscrey booting the extra points. The undefeated Vike reserves gained their third straight win 28-0 at the expense of South. Best led the Vike attack by scoring two touch- downs. jim McCart spilled a South ball cartier behind the goal for a safety. Dewey Wade and Bob Cody added two more touchdowns. The North seconds trompled a previously undefeated Creighton Prep squad 27-0. Bill Best scored the first tally and Bob Moscrey passed to jim Freeman for the Hnal touchdown. Making it live straight North rolled over the Central Eagles 24-O. jack Reddan started the Hreworks by romping 25 yards to score. Moscrey threw two long passes to jack Chris- tensen which were good for two more tallies. Coach Ekfelt's seconds clinched the Inter- city championship by nosing out a strong Bunnie eleven 9-0. No score was made until the third period when center Don Smith came through to block a punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone for an automatic safety. Mid- way in the final quarter Bob Moscrey threw 25 yards to jack Christensen for the only touch- down. Not taking it easy after they had clinched the League crown, the North reserves over- powered the Thomas jefferson seconds 15-O in the season finale. Grid Team Finishes Second in Cit FOO'l'lZ,-Xl,l. Coach Spec Nelson had an 18 game schedule to face which included some of the toughest squads in the state. Building his squad around three lettermen, john Leach, Babe Penney, and Ron Roeder, Coach Nelson added Bob Schropp, Jim Mc- Cart, Bob Moscrey, Chad Taylor, Jerry Gui- nane, Bob Lindberg, Don Fitch, and later Dan Hartman. The Vikes opened their season with a 28- 24 win over the Tech Eve. Next the Vilte offense fell apart as the Boys Town lads downed the Norsemen 36-22. The next week North slipped past the Benson Bunnies 35-32. After losing to Lincoln Northeast 37-28, and Prep 45-20, the Blue and Gold quint managed a 45-34 win over South's Packers. Following a 52-35 loss to a surprising Cen- tral squad, North's five dropped a 32-29 heart- breaker to the Thomas jefferson team. Shortly after, the Vikes again faced the speedy Boys Town kids, losing 52-39. Touring outstate for the next game, the Vikes gave the Columbus five a good scare before falling 29-25. Meeting Benson for the second time of the season, North fell before the improved Bunny five 44-29. After losing to Prep, 49-42, the Norsemen snatched a 44-43 thriller from York. Grand Island, the State champs, then slaDDed a 49-22 defeat on the Vikes, after which Cen- tral again slipped past the North quint 32-31. A greatly improved South High team downed the Norsemen 47-32 when they met for the second time. North then broke their losing streak with a 42-30 win over an eouallv luck- less Tech five. In their last two scheduled games. the Vikings fell before the Fremont Tigers 39-32, and Falls City 30-29. Hoping to regain some of their lost glory. North's squad turned on the heat in the Dis- trict Tournament and dumped Benson 32-26. The fire died out when thev came up against the Creighton Prep team and fell 46-27, to bring an end to a definitely uneventful season. l 'xSKb1'lfl1Al.l, SECOND Tllfkllfallack row: Bill Jensen, Student Manager: Leroy Katz, Ramon lianmto, Ronalfl Kap i1 fl Slniirorlt, Dean Griffitlit Peter Rigntuso, Raymond Dooley, Coach Carol R. Biggs Paces Reserves to ine Wins North's reserves had a mediocre year on the court. They won but four while dropping 10 in the intercity league. Outside the league they were undefeated, dropping the reserves of Belle- vue, Columbus, Papillion, and Fremont and bested the hrst stringers from Sacred Heart twice. In the league, they finished next to last, edging only Tech. Their only wins were over Tech once, Thomas Jefferson once, and South twice. The worst shellacking North took was at the hands of Benson 57-16 and the widest margin of victory 51-20 over Tech. Leading scorer was Louie Biggs who paced the team. Biggs, it seemed, was always good for ten points or better. He had the highest percentage of accuracy on free throws of any player on the second team. His best night was against the Sacred Heart regulars when he scored 23 points. Other standouts were: Bill Duffack. a left- handed artist from the cornerg Fred Shinrock, a tower of strength under the backboardsg Jim Danze, a sophomore hot-shot who was deadly on long shotsg and Ray Dooley, a good guard. John Whalen was an early season standout but was forced to quit because of the aggravation of an old knee injury. Biggs also won a new basket ball from the coaching staff for having the highest percentage of free throws with a .583 average. Other Sports Hold Interest of Many GOLF Viking linksmen, under the direction of D. W. Myers, won the Interstate Golf crown for the I947 season by trimming the Benson Bun- nies and the Fremont Tigers. The Vikes last held the Interstate Golf Cup in 1944 when they were undefeated in league competition. Don Carsey, a two year letterman, made a very good showing for North when he placed fifth in individual scoring at the state meet with 82, despite a cold putter which caused him to use 37 putts. His inability to make putts probably kept him from setting a new Nebraska Stare High School record. Lettermen for the '47 season included Bob Murray, Gordon Severa, Bob Lindberg, Don Blair, Don Carsey, and Herman Blair. North's able linksmen had a good season in inter-city competition also, for they won three and lost two. The Norsemen Won from Creigh- ton Prep, Tech, and Benson, and they lost to Central and dropped a close one to South. The Viking golfers set a new record for the school, and came within seven strokes of the city record when they defeated Tech, 327-403. TRACK The Viking track team won two of three dual meets in 1947 winning one each from South and Benson and dropping one to the Bun- nies in their second meeting. Lloyd Fouser, the only Norseman to place in the city meet, ran third in the 440-yard dash. North qualified seven speeders in the Inter- state meet. They were Charles Sorenson, high- hurdlerg Fouser, 440, Howard Calkins, 880, and the freshman relay team of Ray Moyer, Bill Cody, Dick Furey, and Dick Weston. Dick Weston transferred to Benson after the meet. Fouser and the freshman relay team earned third and second places respectively. Ten trackmen lettered. They were john Whalen, Charles Sorenson, Lloyd Fouser, Bill Cody, Dick Furey, Ray Moyer, Dick Weston, Herb Grau, Earl Benning, and Dan Peterson. Whalen, Sorenson, Fouser, Cody, Furey, and Moyer are out this spring to bring some track trophies to North. TENNIS North High netmen were runners-up in the 1947 state spring tennis tournament. The doubles team lost to Hastings High school in the state tournament. They finished third in Intercity competition with three wins and one loss. They were second in Intrastate, winning two and losing one. In the state tournament, Don Wright lost to Holbrook of Beatrice 8-6. The doubles, com- posed of Mark Gautier and Charles Geisler, won over Boys Town and Fremont before los- ing to Hastings. Duane Post, Don Sealock, Bud Olsen, Bob Bass, Mark Gautier, Charles Geisler, and Duane Wright received letters. The first four are re- turning to boost the hopes for a good season in 1948. Advisers through- out the students' four years have kept informed of their charges' scholastic progress through office cards which report grades and through special reports of unsatisfactory work. Graduat- ing seniors are informed on printed cards of all courses they must take their last semester in order to fulfill the requirements of graduation. Receipts stuff the billfolds of all seniors-a re- ceipt for cap and gown rental, one for a class ring, another for their class party. The most coveted of the printed forms and the last is the one which is handed to the graduate at commencement-the diploma.
