It is here that we spend four years of our lives, and it is here that we complete the metamorphosis from an elementary school child to an adult citizen of tomorrow. We can be proud of our school, not only for its high scholastic record, but also for its outstanding location in Omaha. At its feet lies a growing city, in the distance can be seen the scenic bluffs of Iowa, and around it stand monuments dedicated to mankind ---- the Immanuel Hospital, the Masonic Home for Boys, and the Nebraska School for the Deaf. Yes, this is our school, and we are proud to claim were from North High . Our principal is a man of many roles. We've known him as confidante, sports enthusiast, and advocate of whatever is best for the kids . He acts as arbitrator and office manager, pinch-hits as mes- senger-boy and teacher. In whatever role he appears, though, we've known him to be a fine principal and a sincere friend. HENRY C. MEENTS NORTH HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY H. C. Garner Frank McBride Smivrs V J Guy Oberg was the nearly unanimous choice of his fellow students for presi- dent. Sometimes known as Sonny , he won fame for his record in football, basketball, and golf. Second in command was dark, wavy- haired Hal Sinclair. Hal belonged to the strong, silent type, but his love of food, baseball, and football made him one of the busiest Vikes at North. Secretary of the senior class was red- haired Shirley Alberti, whose vivacious sparkle and winning personality made her a favorite among her fellow class- mates. Patricia Dishner and Patricia Berquist found a mutual interest in sports show business, music, and their post of Ser geants-at-Arms. Two other representatives of the foot ball squad were Kingsley Smith and Dick Brandt, who were popular choices for Sergeants-at-Arms. The Council members are elected by two methods: In the spring, as nominees of various clubs, they are elected by the entire school. In the winter, as candidates of their classes, the members are elected only by the class to which they belong. The duties of these honored gold button members consist mainly of supervising the com- mission members and of taking an active part in the government of the school. Upon recommendations of teachers, 120 boys and girls have served on the blue button Student Commission this year. Unlike the Student Council, the Commission mem- bers fill out application blanks. Teachers put their signatures, the student's grade to date, and remarks on these membership blanks. If the applicant has a satisfactory remark and a B average, he is eligible for membership on the Commission. The various duties of the members include the managing of students in the cafeteria, and keeping halls orderly throughout the school. Both the Commission and the Council are under the supervision and sponsorship of Miss Alice B. Crocker. T. C. The 1946-7 term completes the eighteenth year of ROTC at North. With the eighteenth year, came Master Sergeant Cecil D. Land from Portia, Arkansas. Sergeant Land had served as an officer in Europe during World War ll. With his experiences, he set the Cadets to work on building one of North's finest battalions. The event of the year was the Military Ball. William Haycraft was promoted to colonel and made regimental commander. james Burkland was made battalion commander as lieutenant colonel. The promotions were based on year long competition. The colonels' ladies received bouquets and the lieutenant colonels received the Judd Crocker Memorial Plaque. The Crack Squad and the Silent Platoon performed. This was also the first year the Cadets had had adequate equipment since before the war. The battalion had every weapon which the Infantry uses. There were machine guns, mortars, automatic rifles, bazookas, and many others. Proof of improvement was the rating the North battalion received from Colonel Luke D. Zech of the Seventh Service Command. Colonel Zech gave North the highest rating in the city in a mid-year inspection. COMPANY B De Bolt. Duffner. Clark as the new head of the vocal music department and director of the choir. Mr. Clark, before coming to Omaha, was director of vocal music in Fremont, Nebraska. As accompanist for the choir, Mrs. Mary Silver assists Mr. Clark. She also has charge of several voice groups which include two girls' sextettes, a voice class, and soloists. Students under her direction sang in all the musical programs during the year as well as the Aurora. The largest group in the vocal department is the choir of 140 voices under the direction of Mr. Clark. Each year the choir presents a concert of Christmas music at Joslyn Memorial. A spring concert is also given in the high school auditorium by the choir and smaller vocal groups. The small groups are the Vikettes, thirty girls who specialize in modern songs, the boys' double octetteg and the Madrigals, a selected chorus which specializes in singing folk tunes. Before school two mornings each week fifty-five Vocal Vikings practice for pro- grams which they give for numerous civic organizations in the city. The Vocal Vikings were chosen from several hundred students who were given auditions by Mr. Clark. The highlight of their performances for the year was their Negro Plantation Singers act in the 1947 Aurora. ,Q 1,, 'f 3 - ' :' :1 - --.: 1 I i . - .. .- ,- .- I 5, I V U I , . Thomas, climaxed its work for the year during National Music Week with its annual spring concert May 6 in the Joslyn Memorial concert hall. This year was a busy one for Norths eighty piece senior orchestra, ROTC band, dance orchestra, and newly organized senior band. The ROTC band opened the season with a trip to the Nebraska State Fair at Lincoln the day after school opened. The band was on hand throughout the football season to pep up the student body, The highlight of the year's performances was the thirty minute concert given to open the Military Ball February 28 at Peony Park. The week end of November 21-25 found members of the senior orchestra in Lincoln attending the Nebraska State Music Clinic. Several North musicians held key positions in the Clinic orchestra and Beverly Houser was concert mistress. A selected string en- semble played at the Christmas Concert given by the choir. North's dance orchestra was named the best in the state of Nebraska when it played November 22 at the Clinic dance. Other outstanding performances by the dance group included the Erwin Show and the Aurora. Thirty students from the instrumental groups went by chartered bus to the State Music Contest April l8 at Fremont. Three weeks later a fortunate and talented few who had hurdled the State contest were entered in the National Music Contest April 9 and 10 at Si joseph, Missouri. North won only two games in 1945. Over l5O potential football players were on hand to greet Coach Carol Gast upon his return from wartime duty with the United States Navy. The large turn-out was fortunate in having a coaching staff equal to the task. Mr. Gast had the able assistance of William C. Spec Nelson in coaching the varsity squad. Vernon Ekfelt, wartime coach at Central, was in charge of the second team. Kenneth Swanson, a North High alumnus, coached the freshman team. The Vikes experimented with their new plays in winning the seasons opener 20-l3 from Nebraska City. The next game saw Hal Sinclair lead the Norsemen to a 6-6 tie with Tech. Creighton Prep crushed Viking hopes in the following encounter 26-7. Aksel Schmidtis touchdown wasnlt enough to save a Hghting North squad from a 7-6 loss to Thomas Alefferson of Council Bluffs. Fremont made it three straight losses for the Vikings l9-O. Then the Vikings' luck changed. Howard Calkins scored both touchdowns as North ran over Benson l2-O. Dick Brandt caught a partially blocked Central punt and raced to a touchdown on the third play of the game as the Vikings bounced past Central l4-7. In the final game of the season against South, end Guy Oberg took a Jack Croudy pass and surprised the defending city champions by scoring the first points of the game. North lost to the Packers 26-7. lt was Oberg's outstanding performance in this, and the other games of the season, which earned for him a first team position on the l946 All-Intercity honorary football team. Chambers, Woodworth, Collatz, Ingrnan, Barry, Leigh Nicholsen, Petersen, Toynbee, Benning, Gerhardt, Freeman Grau, Nielsen, Fabian, Maddalena, Carpenter, Fisher Davis, Allen, Leitel WRESTLING Wrestling was revived at North this year under the able tutoring of Vernon Ekfelt, former Central mentor, When he arrived he had but three weeks to get the team ready for its first match. With the help of Gene Driscoll, ex-Tech and Coast Guard champion, he held the All-North Wrestling Tournament. The winners in the tournament became members of the first team. The young and inexperienced grapplers had a poor season, losing all ten of their dual matches and failing to place a winner in the state tourney at South High. It takes time, however, to produce a winning team. Very few of the boys had even seen a high school wrestling match. Coach Ekfelt thinks that in two or three years our opponents will regard us with respect on the wrestling mat as they did in our pre-war wrestling days. Promising prospects for next years team include Bob Grau, who reached the 105-pound semifinals in the state tournamentg Perry Leitel, 95-pounderg Sam Car- penter, weighing 1123 and Fred Maddalena, 118 pounds. A A c .- .. ... Manager Brooks, McCoy, Leach, Schmidt, Murray. Penney, Coach Nelson Roeder, O'Connor, Nielson, Zich, Johnson, Croudy BASKETBALL The Viking basketball squad found Creighton Prep a jinx to their victory hopes all season long. Twice during the regular season North fell to the junior Blues. Came tournament time, and North lost in the opening round of the district tourney to that same Creighton Prep team 37-26. The Norsemen had an up and down season. They won 15, lost 8. North started strong with four straight victories, including wins over Tech and Benson. Following this victory string, the Norse dropped five straight. They lost to McCook, Lincoln Northeast, -Creighton Prep, Boystown, and South. Then the Vikings hit a fast pace to win five in a row. The Blue and Gold squad defeated all five foes decisively. Most notable victories were over a fast moving Columbus club, 55-44, and a 49-28 romp past Thomas jefferson of Council Bluffs. During this span of victories, North was to suffer the first of two great losses. The Vikings were prepared for this first loss, first string center Guy Oberg's graduation in January. But in the following game, Viking hopes were struck an unexpected blow. Dick McCoy, second high scorer on the Norse squad, fell and broke his wrist, thus erding his competition for the season. After another loss to Creighton Prep, the Vikings concluded their regular season with six straight triumphs. The Vikes copped thrillers from York, South, and Fre- mont, 43-42, 45-43, and 35-34, respectively. Falls City, Tech and Central fell to the North axe by wide margins. Forward Henry Zich was North's pride and joy of basketball. Hankls 141 points led the Intercity scoring race. Nonetheless, spectacular was his defensive play. As a crowning tribute to his ability and performance, Zich was named to the All-Intercity basketball squad. Said the Omaha World-Herald, The poll disclosed that Henry Zich, blond bomber of the North High team, is-without a doubt-the No. 1 basketball player in town this season. The flashy 6-foot, lk-inch Zich was the one unanimous selection. The lone letterman, Dan Petersen, was a speedy quarter-miler and sprinter. However, Coach William C. Spec Nelson had experienced veterans to fall back on, including Lloyd Fouser, a quarter-miler and a member of last year's record breaking mile medley relay team. Petersen was also a member of the relay team. Other cindermen with experience were Bill Butler, 880 and mile run, Howard Calkins, 880 and relays, Keith Schermerhorn, hurdles and relays, Tom Nilius, sprints, Rod Golding, sprints and relays, Henry Zich, sprints and relays, Earl Benning, mile run, Dean Brown, weights, Harlan johnson, weights, and jack Reddan, hurdles and high jump. The team had a full season. The boys entered the Tee Jay relays, Intercity meet, Interstate meet, and the Omaha University meet. A few runners competed in the state meet at Lincoln. The Vikings also met the local high schools in a series of dual meets. BASEBALL North's chances look good for batting to the inter-city league championship this spring. Last year the Vikings wound up third in the city standings, trailing Creighton Prep and South. The six lettermen returning this year are Bob Krebs and Dick McCoy, both pitchers and McCoy an all-city and all-state selection last year, Richard Harrison, 'an all-city catcher, Infielders Bob Moscrey and Henry Zich, with Zich an all-city and all-state first baseman, and Outfielder Bob Murray, another all-city and all-state player. Among the hopefuls for the team are alumni of the North Side Bank midget team including JerryiGuinane, John Leach, Bob Schropp, Roger Bridenbaugh, and Bill Duffack. Coach Carol Gast returned last year from the Navy to lead the Norsemen to an 8 win, 5 loss season. The boys from North should easily better last seasons showing. Mr. Gast also coafched the McFayden American Legion baseball team last year. The McFayden team was composed of boys from North High, with the exception of George McGinn of Holy Name High School. The team was runner-up for the state champion- ship, losing only to Fremont during the state finals. 9375 Wa ' QR? if ,Sa is ii 33, -,,.+,..., z?5l3ft ?- Q M,,'-Z TENNIS Viking netmen, under the direction of Floyd L. Chase, took part this spring in all city tourneys and in the state meet. The return of three lettermen, Mark Gautier, Charles Geisler and Don Wright, bolstered the hopes for a successful season. During the 46 state meet, the team advanced to the semi-finals as a result of an impressive win by the doubles team, composed of Mark Gautier and Charles Geisler. The doubles team was beaten by Omaha Central, a powerful duo who went on to sweep the State Championship. In city play, the squad wound up in fifth place. Both doubles and singles team won at different times, but they seldom managed to produce the two victories needel to win a match. GOLF Six returning lettermen turned out this spring to try to bring the city golf champion- ship trophy to North. They included Bob Murray and Gordon Severa who were school golf champions last fall, and Bob Lindberg, Don Blair, Don Carsey, and Herman Blair. In the fall the Norsemen finished third in the city and sixth in the state in high school golf competition. In individual scoring, Bob Murray paced the Norsemen rand concluded the season fifth in the state. The Vikings' victims last season were Tech, Benson, and Fremont. They bowed to Central, Prep, and South. Wins and losses totaled a .500 average during the season for the boys coached by C. W. Myers. ' Entrants in the North High intra-mural tournament teed off in March at Fonte- nelle Park.,4Guy Oberg was the only member of the fall squad to graduate in january and thus be Qjggtinated from spring competition.
