George Palmer, Esther Howe, and Jack Pinker- ton have debated, George having been in three tournaments and Esther in two. Among those on the North Star, Leona is editor-in-chief fol- lowing her term as second page editor last semester. George is advertising manager of the paper, and Carlo is a reporter. Delmer and Carlo drill, Delmer being a supply sergeant and all the boys are in Hi HY. Following the organization of the class in February, everybody enjoyed the party March 30 at Fontenelle Pavillion when entertainment was furnished by members of the class. The hike May 2 was a success although several peo- ple went home 'rather bruised. On june 6 the class closed the year with a banquet in North's library carrying out the idea of pirate ships. Eldon Myers was toastmaster and Lois Edman, George Palmer and Miss Sedlacek gave very interesting toasts. From a class of about ISO, twenty-two are new to North this year, while eight intend to stay over a semester and graduate in june, l932. From this number, Robert Boyd, Carlo Christensen, Lois Edman, Leona Hurlbut, Cyn- thia McMillan, Dorothy Metcalfe, Eldon Myers, and George Palmer are members of National Honor Society while Selden Adkins, Carlo Christensen, Lois Edman, Curtis Gerald, Earl Haffke, Leona Hurlbut, Ruth Matschullat, Fay Lane, Lorraine Michelsen, Maxine Miller,George Palmer, and Ernest Priesman are members of Quill and Scroll. x X f d L. ,' 'iff V 4- mf :F gl -r ' rw H :Jw 'lil t - ' 'QQJQCQVAQK ' v 502.229 fvv A - JXNM ,. f .J ff YX 9 '559??mmng ' QW W5 X 'Q SIVWNH Q ff' W 'WV Q5 ' W' 'ZW :Vx -In aim , wil, UISWQ i, viiif- Q, laqsoffifn 2, EU' 11:5 5 Q ZS:-wig' fu fx .dunnn Q xg E . From the upper third of the classes, 5 per cent of the IIB students may win this honor, I0 per cent of the I2A's, including those who were chosen the previous semester, and a total of I5 per cent of the l2B's. Before an assembly, new members were escorted to the platform by former ones, and given the charge of the society by Miss Nona Robinson the first term, and Miss Fay Southwell, the second term. With the two senior members elected in their junior year With the I6 chosen in December, one of whom graduated in January, and with the I6 newly elected on May I3, North's chapter now includes 33 active members. From this group, William Carter was recently selected as president, Rowena Adams as vice-president, and Russell Rullman as secretary-treasurer. The members of this organization are honor guests at the Scholarship banquet each spring. The dinner, which was held at North on February 21 this year, had as its theme, l..ife's Report Card. Carlo Christensen was toastmaster and introduced the speakers who showed the guests how to best fill their report card of life. -33- .vig Roweua. Membership in Quill and Scroll. national journalistic honor society, is the prize awarded to journalism students in the upper third of the junior and senior classes, who have done some outstanding work in journalism, who are recommended by a faculty committee, and who are accepted by the national secretary of the society. Adding to the ten members of Nortlfs chapter, chosen the first term, ten new members were chosen at a general assembly on May 22. All these students had worked either on the editorial or advertising staffs of the North Star or Polar Log, and all except the reporters had served for three semesters in journalistic work. This organization each spring sponsors a banquet, at which new members are chosen and a toast program given. This year, almost 200 journalism and honor English students convened at a dinner at the Conant Hotel on January 29, at which Ruth Wallace was toastmaster and where the ten students were awarded their Quill and Scroll member- ship and pins. The national Quill and Scroll society also each year sponsors writing contests, one national and four group competitions. Students from all over the United States may enter, and the best articles submitted each year are published in book form. ..34... However, the Forensic League differs from the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and the Athletic Honor Society in that it is not only a reward for meritorious work, but offers further awards for continued excellence in debating. At present, there are seven members: Russell Rullman, president: Miss Nona Robinson, treasurer: Esther Howe, secretary: William Carter, George Palmer, Ernest Priesman, and lsadore Richlin. Russell Rullrnan and William Carter will graduate this june. To be eligible for membership, students must stand high scholastically and have participated in two non-decision debates or have won a decision debate with another school. To each member of the Forensic League participating in an outside debate, points are given as follows: For non-decision debate, eight: for winner of decision debate, IZ: for loser of decision debate, six. The degree of Honor is given a member with 30 points: the degree of Excellence, 60 points: and the degree of Distinction, l00 points. Russell Rullman is the first to gain the degree of Distinction: George Palmer and Miss Nona Robinson have gained the degree of Excellence: while the other members have been awarded degree of Honor. The social activities of the chapter included a theatre party Saturday, May 9, followed by refreshments served at the home of Miss Robinson. ..35... A record, not of brilliant, but of steady effort marks the accomplishments of North's debate team this year. With two veteran debaters, Russell Rullman and George Palmer, the team from North was a contender in the annual Midland College Tournament, in February and the preliminary city meet of the State Debate Tournament, in March. Tech high, which eliminated North in the second round, went to the finals in the state meet at Lincoln during April. Non-decision debates played an increasingly important role in debate activities this year. The Missouri Valley League, and the Interstate League, by a vote of the cc-aches held only non-decision debates. Besides league debates, teams from North par- ticipated in several forensic meets with other Omaha schools, before the Concord Club, the Masons, and North High and Walnut Hill P. T. A. The state question, Resolved: that the nations of the world should adopt a plan of complete disarmament except for those forces needed for police protection, was often supplemented with Resolved, that chain-stores are detrimental to the American public. The Midland tournament team was composed of William Carter, Esther Howe, George Palmer, and Russell Rullman, while George Palmer, Ernest Priesman, and Russell Rullman debated in the city meet. Others who participated in other debates with out- side teams are Robert Boyd, Earl HaHike, Dorothy Metcalfe, Jack Pinkerton, and lsadore Richlin. Jackson. mvm One victory and seven straight losses was the record of North's i930 football team, which made that year the most disastrous by far during Coach W. .lackson's time at North. After winning ten straight in i929 and winning all or part of three different championships, the team played in reverse gear and finished at the bottom of all three leagues. Starting the season with four lettermen, Captain Tietsort, Wurgler, Swanson and Kauffold, Coach jackson was working against odds from the beginning, and as the season went on the odds grew like weeds. After winning the first game and losing the next two, it was just beginning to look as if the boys would! develop into something resembling a football team. Then ten regulars forgot about training rules and Watched the Fremont game from the bench. From then on suspensions, injuries, ineligibilities, and illnesses kept the line-up shifting so fast the players hardly knew each other. The Vikings opened the season at Plattsmouth with their only victory of the year. After trailing by one point for three quarters, the Vikings' weight finally told and they won out by a I3-7 score. From the viewpoint of the spectators this was one of the three best games of the year, the other two being the Benson and Creighton Prep games. With a different lineup playing every game it was hard for any individual to be outstanding during the season. However, five Vikings were good enough to be mentioned in all city selections. George Kauffold was placed at end on both the World Herald and Bee-News second teams, The Herald placed Emerson Guthrie at tackle on the second team, and Carl Gibson at guard on the third team. Paul Anthes, fullback, and Harvey Swanson, tackle, were given honorable mention by the Bee-News. Barras, Kent, Turner, and Zentz also played good football during the year. Emerson Guthrie was placed at tackle on the Interstate First Team. ' V The l93I record should tell a different story. Considering the number of sopho- mores and juniors who played some this year, the whole first team will probably be more or less experienced. Foot-ball letters were awarded to Bert Cahow, Woodrow Tietsort, Emerson Guthrie. Carl Gibson, Joe Scarpa, joe Beran, Ralph Smith, George Kaufiiold, Max Zentz, Kenneth Turner, Adrian Kent, Paul Anthea, Don Flasnick, Harvey Swanson, John Kane. l.-awrence Gridley, Howard Brady, Francis Davis, james Leddy. The Vikings were third in the lnterstate conference and tied with Tech for third in the city. Benson again won the city, also took the Interstate, while Creighton was second in both leagues. The season opened with the first annual alumni game, the proceeds of which went to buy suits for the team. The score was 29-28 in favor of the grads after one overtime period. The game wasn't much as basketball, but the crowd got its money's worth. Both teams were erratic and lacked teamwork, and so it was just a question of whether or not Paul Mason, l930 captain, could score enough points to win for the alumni. As usual, Paul could. After the alumni game, the Vikings took a little trip and came home with the scalps of Glenwood, Fremont, and Missouri Valley, but they left their own hair at Platts- mouth. They beat Glenwood 37-l7, Fremont 24-23, Missouri Valley 3l-l5, and lost to Plattsmouth l4-9. They later avenged the Plattsmouth defeat by a I8-I4 score, and beat Fremont and Missouri Valley again. Two wins from Central, two from Thomas Jefferson, one from Creighton, and two from South, and two losses to Tech, two to Benson, and one to Creighton complete the record. The team was captained this year by two men. Douglas Lane held the reigns until he graduated in january, when the duties of Captain were taken up by Max Zentz. High- est individual honors for the year went to Captain Zentz. He not only was placed on the World Herald all city team at forward, but he was second only to Max Egbert of Benson in individual scoring. Harold Mitchell, forward, Francis Davis, center, Woodrow Tietsort and Frank Groves, guard, were given honorable mention in the all-city selections. Mitchell burned up the league with his scoring for a while, butkhe was out of several games on account of illness and finished the season in sixth place. The teams scoring record was 438 points to opponents 308. The Vikings averaged twenty-three points per game. Letters in basket ball were granted to Max Zentz, Harold Mitchell, Jack Zeigler, Francis Davis, Robert Thompson, Frank Groves, Woodrow Tietsort, Paul Anthes, Ernest Jensen, George Syas. -34- Wrestling On the Mat: Winters, Bramm. Losing all matches but two, and taking fourth place in the city tournament, the North grapplers, under the guidance of Coach N. V. Franklin, finished out their l930-3l schedule. Flasniclt went through all the meets undefeated, and was one of North's three runners-up in the city tournament. The other two were Kauffold and R. Newell. South High copped the city trophy for their second successive year as city cham- pions, there being only five schools represented this year as Central did not enter the race. Tech placed second, Creighton third, North fourth, and Thomas Jefferson fifth. The trophy has now been won for two successive years by South. If they win it next year it will remain theirs. The Viking squad, under their captain, james Hunt, and Mr. Franklin, started out with two losses, one to South and one to Tech. Instead of being weak in heavyweight material, as the squad was last year, the Viking's strength lay in her heavy and middle class men. Beran, Flasnick, Kauffold, and Newell, showed up well, providing exciting matches throughout the season. The lightweight material was limited however, and most of the bouts in these classes were lost. This year's schedule was made up of two matches with each school in the city and two with Tee jay. The decision to adopt National Collegiate Athletic Association rules for the city meets this year made the matches more interesting. North lost all the meets except the two with Tee Jay and the two which Central forfeited. However the Vikings always managed to put up an exciting fight, especially in the middle and heavy weight c asses. During the season the lightweight divisions were taken care of by Winter, Rudolph and Shafer. Hunt, the captain of the squad, demonstrated his abilities in the l25 pound class, and Newell held down the l35 pound division, Kaufliold the I45, Flasnick the I55, and Beran and Gibson the heavyweight. The graduating classes will take little of this year's squad, and Mr. Franl:lin's chances for rounding up a powerful team from the remaining letter men seem likely. Wrestling letters were earned by Robert Allgoocl, Joe Beran, Carroll Babbitt, Robert Dunlap, Roy Eckland, Don Flasnick, jack Gale, Carl Gibson, james Hunt, John Kane, George Kauffold, Herbert Kletke, Robert Newell, john Rudolph, Richard Schaffer, Arnold Willett, Maurice Willett, Henry Winters. -55- .T Athletics ,M - I fb V W 61516117 14g A QF W Baseball First Row: Jacobsen, Groves, Smullen, Ziegler. North's 1931 contribution to the great American sport placed the Nordic name in the honor position of the Interstate League and tied with Tech for second in the city summaries. Led into their battles by the efficient captaining of Eugene Peterson and Wayne Nicholson, the Blue and Cold sandlotters won nine out of their twelve encounters. The Polar Bears topped their list of victories with a very decisive victory over the Nebraska School for the Deaf by the overwhelming score of 24 to 3 in the season opener. ln this battle the Norsemen pounded the Deaf moundsmen for many hits while the Mutes were unable to connect with any of Frank Groves' or Wayne Nicholson's tosses. Creighton and Central were next on the list of the vanquished, through the stellar work of Groves and Nicholson against Creighton and Peterson facing Central in his first mound game, by the rallies of I6 to 7 and 4 to l. South, the present city champions, proved to be the First bump for the slick work- ing Norsemen, turning them back by the score of 9 to 5, the Packer pitchers holding the Northerners to seven scattered hits. This defeat was offset by the Vikings pounding out a I0 to 5 win over the Missouri Valley aggregation. The Central sandlotters were tlnen given their second beating at the hands of the Norsemen to the tune of 9 to 3. The next two games were disastrous for North, South handing them their second defeat, and Tech also turning them back. The scores were 6 to 2 and 7 to l. The next four aggregations, Missouri Valley, Tech, Creighton, and Lincoln, were all taken into camp, Missouri Valley being beaten for the second time to the tune of 4 to 2 through the efforts of Zeigler, Clark and Peterson on the mound. Tech was then taken for a loss in a very tight game which was put on the ice for North by a home run in the last inning by Vernon Smullen, the tiny outfielder. Creighton was again the victini of a slaughter, which assured the Polars the lnterstate championship, by a I0 to 3 tally. Then the Vikings gave Lincoln a beating in the annual game which concluded the North baseball season. The score was 9 to 6, with Zeigler pitching his first full game. Two of the Vikings received berths of the World-Herald All-City team, Adrian Kent being chosen for- second base, and Eugene Peterson, centerfielcl. The Vikings re- ceive the Spalding trophy as a presentation for their winning the lnterstate Champion- ship. Coach Jackson will probably have to find someone for the mound next season, since Groves, Nicholson, Peterson, Zeigler and Clark all graduate before next spring. while all three catchers will remain. Others who graduate are Barras, Jacobsen, Mitchell, Smullen and Zentz. Letters in baseball werevgranted to Kenneth Turner, Donald Flasnick, Robert Thompson, Eugene Peterson, Frank Groves, Jack Zeigler, Wayne Nicholson, Adrian Kent, Max Zentz, Harold Mitchell, Kelly Clark, Norman Jacobson, Bert Cahow, Vernon Smullen. -55- Track First Row: Neef, Gidley, Skow, Cushing, Shaner, Mallette, Slade. North copped lnterstate honors, and a cup, in a meet at Fremont, May 29, which was so close that the final race decided the winner. May I5 and I6 North took part in the State track meet at Lincoln, hut failed to place. The Vikings amassed a total of 6 points at the annual city meet, held this year at Creighton Stadium, May 23. ln the first meet of the season, at T. -I., April 18. in which 26 Nebraska and Iowa high schools were entered, North won first in the sprint relay, Barrie second in the 440 yard run, and the relay team placed second in the 880 yard relay, two thirds were taken in the 440 yard relay and Brady in the 380 yard run, and Hoffman placed fourth in the broad jump. ln the Wesleyan meet April 24, held in spite of a drenching rain, Brady scored a second in the 880 yard run, and Sutton took third in the l00 yard dash, while the relay team received a fourth. ln a dual meet with Central May 6 the Vikings bowed in defeat, scoring four firsts, seven seconds, and four thirds. Those placing were, Battiato, Murphy, Clinken- heard, Widstrup, Barrie, Anthea, Reynolds, Kaech, and Sutton. On May 8 North took second in a triangular meet with Benson and South.
