“Some Enchanted Evening. “South Pacific” was first produced at the close of World War II. The musical had its setting on a remote South Pacific Island w here the Navy Seabees were stationed for two years near native villages. American Nurses were assigned this outpost, to the delight of the military personnel on the island. Comedy situations, musical per- formances and dance numbers were the result of the mixture. One of the nurses, Nellie Forbush, reluctantly fell in love with Emile de Becque, a French plantation owner. Another romance developed, between Lt. Jo Cable and a Tonginese beauty. The War found its way into the play when Lt. Cable and Emile are sent on a dangerous mission which changed the course of the war. The terrace of Emile dc Bccque's plantation home. Thomas during Thanksgiving During October and November, it was not uncommon to hear the music of “Bali Hai drifting through the halls of Olympus. Under the direction of Maury T. Newman, show orchestra members met regularly at 7:00 a.m. for rehearsals, but vocalists are the most vital part of a musical and Glen Slight took charge of the vocalists of this “South Pacific. ” Excellent voices accompanied by a beautiful orchestra made “South Pacific” a high quality production.
