Not content with mediocrity, his attitudes were reflected in a progressive program at Olympus. Wheth- er supporting a modification of the Honors Program or initiating a tutorial assistance plan for potential National Merit Scholars, he concerned himself with assisting the student. Often seen at school games and pep assemblies in his identifiable green jacket. Mr. Larsen exemplifies the epitome of school spirit. Olympus, its faculty, ad- ministration and student body collec- tively and individually, enjoyed the ded- ication and full attention given by this scholastic and administrative leader. Frank Heywood, Vice-Principal Mr. Heywood. the authoritarian spirit of Olympus, carried out his responsibilities well and with efficiency. Whether checking on sluffers or parking violaters. or consol- ing parents and teachers. Mr. Heywood showed his concern for the students. He came to Olympus as a counselor in 1957 and insists that he’s been here a thousand years. Affectionately known as ‘Red Dog. Mr. Heywood displayed wit and versatility and could be friend or foe as the need arose. Loren Burton, Vice-Principal Combining talent, effort and new ideas. Mr. Burton had much to do with a success- ful year at Olympus. Endowed with a sense of humor and a genuine interest in people, he has assisted Mr. Larsen for three years, overseeing school programs and activities. He has been particularly involved with the Honors Program and an eighth period mini course. Well-liked and an asset to the school. Mr. Burton earned the respect of both the administration and the student body. a 15 Gwen Anderson Wayne Goates Counselors Colleen Dallin Changing schedules, pleasing whimsical and irate students and unknotting baffled parents produced a new challenge for six persevering counselors. Each dedicated to helping undecided individuals, to under- standing and advising, to encouraging the discouraged, to guiding students to see themselves and others more objectively. Another of their infinite tasks was to help enforce the new dress code that was intro- duced to Olympus students this year. Yet another task was to orient new students, seniors and sophomores alike, to the changes in Oly’s counseling procedures. Their devoted time and influence has made them a vital part of high school experience. Rita Staley Richara narper SUPERINTENDENTS Dr. Elmer J.Hartvigsen Superintendent Dr. Orvil England Deputy Superintendent Dr. William E.Hutchinson Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ted J.Peterson Deputy Superintendent Dr. Charles Lloyd Deputy Superintendent BOARD OF Mr. Brant Badger Treasurer Dr. Reed Call Assistant Superintendent EDUCATION Mr. Wayne O.Ursenbach Mr Richard Winder A meeting of highly interested educators concerned with the teaching programs and technique in the Granite District. Repre- sentatives from each school work together to produce a concrete policy that will satisfy both teacher and student. They look ahead to further advancement and new concepts in teaching while striving to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning. These behind-the-scenes workers who give energet- ically to Utah’s most demanding district deserve our appreciation and recognition. Mr. William B Martin Mr Keith Brown Mr. Allen Brown Carol Spackman ENGLISH LANGUAGES Wilford Bruderer Gayle Davies Judy Davis Linda Moreau Betty Morris Mary Neiman Being surrounded by such faces as Huckle- berry Finn, Hamlet, and even Caesar, the Oly student body plunged into a new Eng- lish department. The introduction of se- mester classes gave the student a fresh ap- proach to English studies. At the same time, just down the stairs, in fact, another approach took place. This time with foreign languages. Spanish. French. Latin, and Ger- man students spent the year not only learn- ing and memorizing the language but also gaining a greater appreciation of the coun- try they studied. Barbara Springer Deone Sutherland Virginia Thaxton Delmar Barth George Barton Vernon Blackman Roger Carrier Verl Cox Ken Farrell Eldon Hurst Diane Jensen Robert Johnson Robert Liddiard James Lowther Charles Miller MATH SCIENCE From the sum of a limit to ionic bonding (and everything in between) was explored by math and science enthusiasts this year. Amid se- mester classes and lab-days, teachers and students explored the depths of their par- ticular question, whether it be the ingre- dients to electric Kool-Aid or an ulterior mo- tive to Calvin Butterball’s lovelife. Neverthe- less. the departments did produce future scientists, technicians and the like, and prov- ed to be an outstanding department at Olym- pus. Kenneth Minson Lois Anderson George Barfus Donald Black Susan Chadwick Gerald Christensen Richard Crocker Donald Dixon Pat Farrell Betty Hayward Nancy Mathews Mary Moss Ruth Stevens Shirley Tanner Eldon Tolman SOCIAL STUDIES AND BUSINESS “The next noise you hear will be that of two- million typewriters all trying to take short- hand.” Despite these and various setbacks that occur when you put the carbon in back- wards. the business department survived another year in style. A much needed resource center and a new western history class highlighted this year’s 20 social studies’ department. The exposure to constant classwork was remedied by various field trips, movies, and independent projects which marked the department as exciting, innovating and refreshing. Don Allen Jacqueline Butler Lorin Folland Eloise Barratt FINE APPLIED ARTS It would seem that Watercolor I and Drama have little in common; not so, however, for each has its vision of art and tells its story precisely. The departments in the category of Fine and Applied Arts, from Dance to Woodwork j fcrOcted their students in the develoi n3«ftt''of their inherent talents and gained just recognition. Then it got cold and you thought you had it made, only to find out you had to run around the gym. -Driver’s Education got their supply of slight- ly scared sophomores and over-anxious juniors again this year. But each was given a chance to show why he needed the class while practicing on the range, in the simu- lator. and on the road. Stop! -The Air Force R.O.T.C. made their appear- ance at Olympus this year. Within a month, the student body got used to the idea of seeing uniforms every Wednesday, and the few shallow complaints quickly vanished as ROTC began its initial year. Fredrick Esch James Fisher Joan Kingston Edson Packer Marjorie Smith Nona Larsen William Monroe Jean Porter Marilyn Peterson Stuart Manookin Glen Motzkus SPECIAL ED, AV, LIBRARY The departments of special education, audio-visual, and library all helped in serv- ing important needs of the students and faculty. The library was always full, either with people looking for material or taking advantage of the only quiet place in the school. The A.V. center found little relief from the constant schedule of handling films, printing handouts and making morn- ing announcements. The teachers of spe- cial education helped those students who needed help. 23 NEW ACADEMICS The relaxed learning situation wasn’t the only innovation in Olympus’ halls. Many new classes and curriculum changes en- hanced the models of teaching and learning. Semester history and English classes were introduced, making it possible for the stu- dent to be a little more selective in what he wished to study. New resource centers aid- ed the students in individual study projects and provided a quiet place to study when the library was full. R.O.T.C. was reintroduced after an absence of six years. These adop- tions. along with an already outstanding academic program, produced a year of in- novation at Olympus. 24 Lee Goalen Treasurer Elaine Moss Secretary Dorthy Putnam Registrar SECRETARIES Marilyn Smith Secretary Harriet Snarr Secretary La RaeZimpfer Secretary CAFETERIA FRONT ROW-Left to right: Bonnie Landvatter, Lucy Widerburg, Elna Howard, Edie Prodnuk, Ginny Tea. The pres- entation of a totally revised constitution provided the student body with extended freedoms in the areas of petition and refer- endum initiation. It also provided a student bill of rights and loosened restrictions on publications. The constitution also initiated the revival of the Honor Council which heard student and teacher grievances and awarded honors for special faculty and student a- chievements. The elimination of class vice- presidents and secretaries made room for new class coordinators under the control of the class president, and together they worked more efficiently to create memor- able class activities. The semi-free dress standards also marked the year of change at Olympus. Introduced on a one year, trial basis, the new code hoped to show that high school students could react maturely to an atmosphere of relaxed learning. They performed duties by reporting to each fifth period class at two week intervals to inform each student and teacher of events and activities, and to encourage greater participation in the gov- ernmental affairs of the school. When not busy with classes, this body tackled problems within the school and tried to correct them. They successfully passed an amendment to the consitiution deleting the grade-point average needed to become a class coordi- nator. They also sponsored forums intended to inform students on today's events. The Senate also worked on a teacher evaluation program and possible curriculum changes. nm «R3 ORGANIZATIONS . ..... -j iZ r y£r- si? st ss-c 4iC y ?£. This year’s pep club put up with all this and more to make up one of the best conglomeration of sizes, colors (green being most common) that Olympus has had. Oly's pep club boosted the morale and spirit of team and student body. Standing together to serve the traditions of Olympus and help the students unite as one. Not so. however, for this service organization spent the year organizing activities for both the student body and the community. A road rally at the beginning of the year turned loose a multitude of anxious drivers ready to try anything to win. During hunting sea- son. the club, under the direction of Pres- ident John Thorup and Sponsors Mr. R. Lid- diard and Mrs. E. Hurst, challenged Titan hunters with the Buck Buck Contest. Cash prizes were awarded for the biggest set of antlers. At Christmas the club sponsored the Sub-for-Santa breakfast, a tradition of the Key Club to aid needy families at Christ- mas. AEROSPACE EDUCATION-AIRFORCE R.O.T.C. Protecting Olympus against enemy forces, this first year organization produced changes in life at the school. Colonel Fisher and Fredrick Esch have been responsible for organizing the corps and hope to instate the group as a respected and integral part of Olympus. The Reserve Officer Training Corps gave noticeable service in providing flag ceremonies at assemblies and athletic contests. Corps members studied military procedure and practiced drills but other classes. Thursdays took on a military air with the uniformed officers to be and bril- liant military strategists devouring their K-rations at noon. FIRST ROW, Left to Right: M. Bcrtola, SECOND ROW: C. This spirited group was noted for their pro- duction of spontaneous musical variety shows—inspiration often settled upon them in places as strange as elevators and buses. Christmas was a challenge for the choir as they “rose to astronomical heights to meet their heavy schedule of engagements. The Day of Zeus marked the beginning of the fes- tive week featuring the film Giant of Marathon. Tuesday began the Olympics with a multitude of activities from horeshoe pitching and a greased pole to the main event — the buck-buck contest. An appearance in concert by Holden Caulfield and the Grapevine plus the Paint-in. highlighting painting and sketches of Homecoming, added more to an already enterprising week. Thursday closed the Olympic events with a feast followed by a torch-run and pep rally. Finally. Titans celebrated the Day of Ares by wearing togas with the alumni hosting the Homecoming assembly followed by the football game with West. At half time the Trojan Horse provided the means of announcing the Homecoming Queen. The Homecoming Dance climaxed the weeks events. Some- times confusing, oftentimes arduous, but always amiable.
