ODYSSEY 1969 Olympus High School May, 1969 Volume 16 Jean Goodman, Editor Roger Workman, Editor Ann Tanner, Adviser You would measure time the measureless And the immeasurable. . . Vou would adjust your conduct And even direct the course of your Spirit according to hours and seasons. . . — Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing. . . Yet the timeless in you Is aware of life's timelessness. . . And knows that yesterday Is but today's memory And tomorrow is today's dream. —Kahlil Gibran ADMINISTRATION Whether setting up national merit workshops to promote scholastics, orsupporting atheletics by being a front row cheerer, Dr. Larsen tried to find an area in which each student could identify. A hero of diplomacy and a compro- miser while establishing acceptable standards of dress, he coordinated student—teacher in- terests. He was one of Olympus' most active participants and supporters of extra-curricular activities. Under the petrifying sounds of a deep booming voice, was a warm smile and an effective principal. Dr. Larsen—accepted as a person who liked to live young and who shared the ideals of Olympus. VICE-PRINCIPAL INTERN-PRINCIPAL Mr. Loren Burton Mr. Frank Heywood Again proving his immense capability and efficiency in carrying out the many and varied duties that are the Vice-Principal's, Mr. Hey- wood struck terror in the hearts of those who would escape the parking lot at noon, calmed irate parents, made sparkling morning announcements, and generally smoothed out the wrinkles that arose in every school day. Dad Heywood took the ribbing in assem- blies in stride and played a mean game of basketball. Being Dr. Larsen's right hand man is no easy job, but Mr. Heywood did it with his own special brand of humor and got the job done. He has become a tradition-a habit at Olympus. With a head full of fresh ideas, and concern for budget and the experimental eight period day, Mr. Burton survived his intern year at Olympus. His inquisitiveness impressed the administration and his tall, dark, handsome appearance endeared him to the female por- tion of the school. He was an avid athlete, whether on the basketball floor with Mr. Hey- wood or in the bleachers urging on the teams. He brought a unique personality and new per- spective to the administration of Olympus. Mr. Alden Laney Senior Boys' Mr. Richard Harper Junior Boys' Mrs. Gwen Anderson Senior Girls' Mrs. Colleen Dallin Junior Girls' COUNSELORS Between problems, urging gradualists, drying tears, wading through pinkyellowbluewhite slips, searching the files, when you're least expecting help, there's a smile. Meeting, smil- ing, preaching, condoling, listening, persuad- ing, worrying, down the small hall in the office, a place where every student was welcome. Writing excuses, guiding conduct, advisors, ready with a rewarding smile when all worked out, advising. The edge of sanity-mentors in terms of student empathy. Indispensible. Mrs. Rita Staley . New methods were considered and marked improvements were made. By securing the most powerful IBM computer made, they helped improve Utah's largest district. Counting students-counting time. But somewhere between the cam- paign slogans and cliche'd banners, a student body is faced with the choice of officers; bal- lots have been cast, counted, announcements have been made and applauded, and the new- ly elected are faced with the overwhelming task of planning a balanced, active school year. Stoically sprawled in a red leather chair in the new student body room, sleeping in Psychology, or lunching from a brown sack first period, Student Body President Richard Moore proved to have the leadership quality capable of molding 2,400 individuals into one united functioning body. Beginning the year with experiences gained at the Mill Hol- low Leadership Conference and Freedom Academy, Richard initiated the Council of Presidents of Granite School District, and in- stigated the Denver Exchange. Avidly con- cerned, responsive yet demanding, he be- came his own worst critic during the duration of his term. Not easily defeated, utterer of phrases that were unmistakeably Moore. Richard Moore—OHS President, 1968-1969. 24 Scott Ogden Vice President The morning announcer, the quiet unobtru- sive officer, who was innevitably there. He could be seen walking down an empty hall late after school, or driving around in a convert- ible blue V.W. Being a hater of spending money made him an apt budget watcher. A perceptive individual who could see both sides to a question. Dedicated, ingenuous personality, a thinker—a subtle dry wit that could ease tension in a word.ScottOgden - the adhesive force of the Student Officers. Karl Rove Senate President Munching Oreos or politicing, Mr. Karl Rove was a man of the people. He put the Olympian Senate into motion with his own characteris- tically well-versed arguments and witty com- ments. Talking, reading, talking, writing speeches, talking, talking, talking—sometimes brilliant, sometimes verbose. Coming or going, constantly on the move. A doer instead of a watcher; vitally concerned, ever-debating, a mighty funny, never-stopped-to-ponder kind of a guy. STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Mrs. Pat Farrell Advisor Dodging students to get into the student body room or energetically crusading for a new idea, Mrs. Farrell faced the problems of being Student Body Advisor with extraordinary empathy and open-minded pragmatism. A diplomat, a friend and companion; an easily excited, highly emotional person. She is successful because she remembers that she was a student once and she knows that students are complex individuals to teach; and to learn from. Jan Mulvay Historian Known to be complicated because she was so human, Jan was a natural people lover. Al- though rarely unoccupied she found time to stop and talk. A giggler who could easily be- come hysterical; a historian who kept meetings on the subject. Very slightly rebell- ious, understanding, sensitive, persuasive; who although hounded about being on time, about procrastinating, clipped newspapers, raffled turkies, praised people and thoroughly enjoyed being Historian. Debbie Dowell Secretary Having sudden spurts of sporadic organization, Debbie was recognized among her cohorts as the organizer. Characteristically pinning up reminders and notices, she somehow kept the year in efficient running order. A girl who set out to accomplish all in her own whimsical way, wholesomely living in the simple world of fundamental thought. Whether singing slightly off key, eating anything at all, or giggling, she was a happy officer; almost in- conceivably the girl next door. Becky Wirick Historian Hauling an antique briefcase, with a sweater tied precariously around her waist, Becky added the unique touch to an already diverse group. A girl who likes a blanket and three T.V. shows all at once; who loves the solitude of her own room, and finds it difficult to stay in school when it's snowing. A natural at seeking creativeness, she caughtthe superficial moments on paper, evaluated actvities and mounted newspapers. Quiet and yet out- spoken. An individual. CLASS OFFICERS Pencils clicking—toes tapping—pulses beat- ing—and class officers moving with the rhythm of school life. Stephen Olsen, Jenny Lewis, and Julee Kirkham took over the ris- ing class of Sophomores. Juniors looked to Jeff Work, Brad Scott, and Peggy Bullock. The Seniors united their forces under Todd Kimball, Omar Leeman, and Marsha Metcalf. Dances were scheduled, planned, decorated, and presented. Originality and uniqueness enhanced the traditional proms. Parties were given to lighten the burdens and brighten the daily routine of school. Assemblies were written, casted, practiced, and performed. Together they aimed to bring out the best of the class. Each group of three was determin- ed to make this year a special year with special times, uniting their class through ac- tivities. The worries of the class officers did not prevent an enthusiastic boost for ac- tivities. 1. Todd Kimball Senior President 2. Omar Leeman Senior Vice President 3. Brad Scott Junior Vice President 4. PEP CLUB Fighting off the blahs, stomping the turf at a 6:00 A.M. or trying to get the green out of the white knee socks were among the problems faced by the Pep Club. Eighty screaming, clap- ping, rah-rahing girls performed the vital ser- vice of keeping momentum up and apathy down by making posters, singing in the halls, and forming a big O in the middle of the basketball court. Basketball and football team members came home to find crepe-papered, ballooned rooms, fried chicken, and some- times a couple of extremely embarrassed girls trying to escape unobtrusively out of the window. President Suzy Farish and Mrs. V. Berntson and Mrs. M. Smith managed to keep a sort of organized chaos around a great bunch of excitable, irrepressible, ever-active fe- males. 97 L 70. President Marti Sonntag and adviser Mrs. Joan Kingston provided the club with a welcomed social atmosphere of exchanges with other schools, guest instruc- tors, a dinner dance, and a few food-packed parties. The concert, filled with painted bodies, classicalism and jazz: gave the school an opportunity to experience the bizarre and exotic. 1. J. Rytting 2. L. Vincent 3. S. Smith 4. D. Roberts 5. L. Tl BOOK Aided by remarkably accurate computers, the Ti Book staff along with adviser Mr. Crocker, filed, proofread, and checked numbers. The directory was distributed at registration to be tucked away in purses for a year of use and re- use. Cherished by the lovelorn, lost and for- gotten by assignment missers, practically errorless and uniquely designed, the Ti Book made the job of finding a student merely a matter of knowing his name. 186 PEGASUS One, Pegasus. Two, 1969. Three, Olympus High Literary Magazine; exploring, creating, developing, searching for individual know- ledge. Prose, poetry, art, photography, maybe even truth. Proving that the scope of intellect in a high school student does not end at a book report or a two-page Trig assignment, editor Roger Workman, associate editor Tom Monsen, and assistant editors Diana Telford and Kathy Thorpe attempted to mold an em- otion, create a mood, and j ust present an experience based on school-wide creativity. Applied knowledge and logical skills perhaps made the difference between the average student and the ten merit finalists who endured through four hours of complicated brain-testing only to emerge as exceptional scholars. Congratu- lated and duly recognized for their mature intelligence, the Merit Finalists and ten Letters of Commendation received scholarships and awards on a national basis. To the natural genius, belonging to the National Hon- or Socity wasn't a great feat, but to most mem- bers it meant extra hours of studying and out- of-class preparation. A gold tassel and certif- icate at graduation were the final recognition for this group of scholars. The drama department competed in Region Two in categories including monoact, panto- mimes, dramatic and humorous readings, and retold stories. The one act play, written by Synge, Riders to the Sea succeeded in win- ning Region Two to compete in state com- petition. Rick Higgins, student representative, argued in favor of the student cause, while Mr. K. Minson, chairman, kept the student wishes in the realm of reality. Organized to encourage early planning and arranging activities, the Council offered a systematic and active calendar to Olympus. Front Row, Left to Right Mrs. M. Smoot, Mrs. E. Barratt, Mrs. V. Marty 206 ELECTION COMMITTEE Behind the running of all the school elections, counting and recounting the votes, was an efficient group comprised of ten students, the Election Committee. Mrs. J. Bennion, and Glade Curtis kept the committee busy with a cookie sale, and planning the general elec- tions. IBM computers facilitated the counting procedures and the campaign party was an activity in which the candidates could demon- strate their qualifications. Bouncing rolls of the tables at a Boy's State dinner, or singing old time favorite Girl's State songs, the representatives from Olympus thoroughly enjoyed a busy week in Logan. The untraditional activities ranged from an unexpected raid on the boy's dorms to a mock trial of a little old lady who hit a dog (the end- ing being ultimately Perry Mason-ish). Politi- cal and key note speakers highlighted the week by adding an insight into the responsi- bilities of every citizen. To all Olympus rep- resentatives, Boy's and Girl's State were two weeks of learning about Government and the Political systems through actual experience. Walt Whittman MEMORIAL Jay Carroll Robert F. Kennedy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dwight D. Eisenhower ■y 211 Finally published, criticized, praised or signed without a close look, the '69 Odyssey has finally become a memory—of a year inter- spersed with depression and excitement; of twenty-four hundred individual flashbacks; of old tomorrows, old dreams; of lives, anxieties; of sports heroes, clubs, and ecstatic activities. Above all, however, it has become a memory of youth. To the average student, the '69 Odyssey is a book to leaf through; it is pages to hurrily scribble cliches on, maybe even status when the inevitable picture count is taken. But to seventeen not-so-average girls in room 120, it is a different kind of memory. It is to them that the greatest thanks must go: for after-school hours, parties, friendship, and ever-increasing ideas that produced the book of the year—all individuals, all leaving definite marks on these two-hundred-twenty pages. Some can be seen more than others. Diana can be seen in the copy—bright, interesting copy that captures the personality of the girl behind its forcefulness. Her creativity was never-end- ing; her continual laughter, indispensable. Marcia also left her mark in type. The index be- came an obsession for accuracy; classes, a matter of personal pride. Hers was a mark of determination—highly individual, spirited, de- pendable. Pictures are the most important element in any book. To Hal, thanks must be given for controlling an unsponsored, rela- tively green group, and still managing to pro- duce that aforementioned comodity on time and in focus. There is one mark, however, that stays hidden to the student body, yet can be evidenced in every lay-out and every block of copy. It is an experienced, conscientious, whole-hearted mark that could only belong to Ann Tanner. Her title was adviser, a misnomer for her dedication and preserverance. No editor could doubt her usefulness, no amount of credit could ever be enough. To the Blairs goes a somewhat traditional thanks; to Gary, a special thanks for understanding the idea and putting it into the numberous club pictures. To American Yearbook and Dan Stanton, a senti- mental, anxious thank you for turning yester- day's ideas into a concrete stream of thought, today. It is time for these editors to exit; confident, reminiscent, somewhat skeptical about turning over the book to next year's staff. But yesterday is a memory—a memory we, as editors, have tried to capture.
