Each year the American Legion sponsors a one weekts study of government at Wake Forest Univer- sity. This years delegates from Olympic are Don Beaty, Joel Ferguson, and Robert Mills. Over 450 delegates to Boys State participated in mock city, county, and state governments. They have their own parties, conventions, and elections. This activity is in an effort to teach the students more about the workings of government. The boys create their own laws and at the end of the week elect a governor. During their free time they participated in athletics and other activities. Robert Mills, Joel Ferguson, Don Beaty Boys and Girls State Girls State is sponsored each year by the American Legion Aux- iliary at UNC-G. This year Olympic's representatives were Debbie Dillon and Rachel Wilson. For one week in June, they attended workshops which were distinguished by such speakers as Governor Iim Holshouser and Senator Sam Ervin. The citizens of Girls State made their own laws and elected a governor, as well as other state officers. A11 in all, the week was well spent; both girls agreed that they learned much about the workings of our government. 52 Outstanding Teenagers Six students who have dis- tinguished themselves as outstanding were selected by the Scholarship Committee to participate in the Outstanding Teenagers of America program. Criteria for their selection include demonstrated leadership ability, unusual talent, excellent academic achievement, and com- munity service. Students participating are eligible for further state, regional, and national awards as well as scholarships. This award has become one of the nation's highest and most coveted for young people. Anne Karin Christensen The Charlotte Exchange Student Program promotes international understanding by sponsoring students abroad. During the summer of 1973 one of Olym- pic's rising seniors went overseas under the Americans Abroad Program. Charlotte Gunn, spending two months in Sweden; was given the opportunity to go sailing on the Baltic Sea, sightsee in the royal palace, andtvisit for two weeks in Finland. On Charlotte's return trip she brought her Norweigan sister Anne Karin Christensen to spend the 7374 school year at Olympic. While living here, Anne Karin has been ac- tively involved with the Winter Sports Club, the Journalism Staff, and the tutoring program at Steele Creek. Olympic is proud to have Anne Karin as a member of the Class of 1974. Charlotte Gunn D. A. R. Award Selected because of her outstanding abilities in leadership and service both to the school and the community, Linda Sherrill was chosen as the 1973 recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. This year the Trojan football team was hampered by defeat, injuries, and internal strife. Despite the ef- fort and ability shown by the team in its victories, the Trojans as a whole never really Hgot it together. Several outstanding players were recognized however by being selected for All-County teams. Defensive middle-guard Scotty Stone was the only Trojan chosen for The Charlotte Newst first team; he was also placed on the Coaches' All-Conference team. Kicker Rene Geesing and defensive half-back David Ward were selected for The Charlotte News' second team; The Charlotte Observer chose Rick Climer as one of its second offensive guards. Two highlights of the season were the es- tablishing of a new Olympic record with Rene Geesingts 46 yard field goal against North Mecklen- burg and our Homecoming shutout of the previously unbeaten Independence Patriots. Grunt, pull, and bite your tongue! 72 The Junior Varsity Football Team posted a fine 5-2 record this season, its season being cut short by the loss of its players to the varsity squad. Although outmanned in every game, the Junior Varsity managed to outhit and out-hustle every opponent they faced. - Leading the Baby Trojans on offense was quarterback Wendell Phillips. Many times he got the team out of hotspots with his quick feet and running ability. This year's team was also blessed with more good running backs than it has ever had: Scott Hofsess, Chip Stevens, Jimmy Starkey, A1 Ieeter. Because there were only 24 players on the squad, most of the offensive line also .played defense. After the very honorable season the Baby Tro- jans had for themselves, they proved that itbabies can mature quickly, when necessary, to give the Varsity Squad needed depth. These young men provided quite a few thrills for the spectators, both as junior varsity and varsity players. xi: Time to do some fast-stepping. Spread your wings and fly. What a boot! The Trojan basketball team, after finishing tied for first place last year, went through a rebuilding year in 1973-74. With only two seniors 0n the team, the juniors gained valuable experience with every game. This year Coach Vernon Hedrick was without the big man; our tallest players were only 6' 2 . Russell Anthony, Stan Brown, Reginald Nance, Richard Bigham, and Dwight Allen were the starting five for the 1973-74 season. With the addition of some of the top Junior Varsi- ty players and the return of four of this year's starters, next year Olympic should have a team of which it should really be proud. We'll have to stop meeting like this! 27 w Indep, G.ewV'rrflng' r. .x Winning tradition. Wrestling is an infectious sport; after the bug bites, one realizes there is no antidote. Of course, after several matches, he really doesn't care, especially when the Trojans are on the mat. The 1973-74 Olympic grapplers have attained another successful record, 10-3. To witness the dedication, determination, and skill possessed by these young men as they show what hard work and desire can do reminds one of what life really is. Many young men had the opportunity to wrestle varsity this year because of the numerous injuries that plagued the team, but perhaps the most exciting match of the regular season occurred when Don Beaty defeated Husst heavyweight to give Olympic the win. The entire team, however, offered fans many thrills, as well as a few tears. Tournaments play an important part in the wrestling season. Without the usual snow, the Trojans tied with North for first place in the Olympic Invitational. The District Tour- nament determines the two young men in each weight who will progress to the State Tournament. This year Jimmy Starkey, Rick Climer, and Michael Black took district first places at 119, 155, and unlimited, respectively; James Sledge was second at 145. Sophomore Jimmy Starkey placed fourth in the state competition. The All-County roster held four Olympic names: James Sledge U451 and Rick Climer t155i, first team; Jimmy Starkey I119t and Joel Ferguson t138t, se- cond team. Way to go, Coach Bruce Hardin! The overall team record was 9-5-1, and the division record was 6-5. The Trojans' loss to Asheville snapped a winning streak of 7-0-1. After that game and the Ashbrook game, which, according to Coach Iohnson, the players ttgave away, the team could not bounce back. The loss of those last five important games knocked the Trojans out of the playoffs, although they stomped Myers Park. The pitching staff consisted of Danny Rhino tS-ZL Mark Clapham t4-2L and Steve Blume L241, the teams dark horse. In most cases the hitting backed up the pitching with five men batting over .300. Disappointed Coach Eltoh Hawley's team ended the season with a record of four wins and ten losses. The major problem the team faced was finding umpires, someone who would work for the love of baseball rather than the love of money. The team was sparked by Chip Helms and Ted Harkey, who proved to be the most consistent players of the season.
