Mr. Dick Allen, group leader, described it as a group of people who want to help other people and have the skills to do that. Peer Support Team members offered free tutoring to over 80 of the peers, pro- vided new student orientation to approxi- mately 150 new students, and presented a freshman orientation. They also gave a pre- sentation to incoming 9th graders on the transition from middle school to high school. In addition, the team hopes to start discussion groups in study hall. The debate class exposed students to all phases of public speaking and provides excellent grounding for work in drama. Some class require- ments included expository speeches, oratory speeches, and dramatic and oral interpretations. The debate students looked forward to the trav- el opportunities to debate tournaments, meeting new people, and the confidence gained through public speaking. Debate tournaments consisted of one team rebuttaling another on a topic through researched facts. Students chose to take either an affirmative or a negative stand on a controversial topic. Olympia students have good reason to be proud of their talent- ed peers. Seniors Tony Giles and Debra Brunton represented OHS in the state solo contest, while Chorus and Girl's Glee were certain to take an outstanding trophy. Several seniors received the highest of recognitions-being chosen for All-Northwest. These students were chosen from over one thousand musicians who submitted tapes to be judged. Tony Giles, Susan Cosden, Jenny Siegle, and Drene Jensen traveled to Seattle in April to be coached by three of the finest conductors in the United States. ln addition to their musical honors, the Chorus was a leading influence in the Choral Festival, as was the Orchestra in the String Festival. The Festivals were a combination of local high school, junior high school, and grade school musicians. Orchestra also performed superbly this year, as they re- ceived the outstanding trophy and superior ratings from all three judges at contest! Described by the coaches as one of the solid, all-around group of athletes, from their freshman to senior year, they have never known anything but BHL championships. For the third consecutive year, the Oly Bears have beaten their cross- town rivals, the Capital Cougars. They have been undefeated in league play for the last three years and have had 24 consecutive league wins since 1979. Another impressive statistic about the retiring varsity is that of the 220 quarters of play, they have only allowed the opponents to score on 56 of those, and most of these were in the fourth quarter. Out of the 50 games they have played during their varsity and J.V. experience here at Olympis High, these seniors have only lost 4. That's a 95 percent winning record. lt was an exciting and challenging season for those Oly team mem- bers. Their many victories certainly will outweigh their defeats. However, the cross-country teams did far more than just finish races. The season opened with a jamboree involving ten teams. The girls took first place and the boys received third. Both teams continued their winning ways placing third in league and taking fifth place at the district meet. Boys' JV and varsity, led by top runner Tim Steen, finished with a 6-2 record while the smaller girls' team competed only on the varsity level, finishing with a 4-4 record. Sue Ocken, who was undefeated in league and went on to place 2lst of H2 runners at State, led the girls. To wrap up the season, members enjoyed a banquet at the Westwater Inn with money raised at their bowl-a-thon held during the season. Matt Ruhl received the Most Improved and the ninth grade Inspirational Award. Debbie Tygart received Most lmr- poved for the girls. However, this did not even seem to be a drawback for the girls. After losing their first two opening matches, the girls got back on their feet and won the remaining league games. Everyone was pleased with the efforts of the girls, as they traveled off to Districts. There they played hard, but they dropped two out of three to wrap things up for the season. The following girls received awards in these areas: Team Captains, Cheryll Brandell, Wendy Geist, Most Improved, Christine Nelson, Most Inspirational, Jill Lindbergg and Coaches Award, Karen Renz. Their experience made them a team to watch out for in the Black Hills League. Although defense was the strong point Coach Maguire expected they would be hitting the ball and scoring many runs. Even though the pitching staff was very young and two top players were out early in the season due to injuries, the team appeared tough to beat. The Bears didn't have a team captain this year, but alternated with every game. Boys' Tennis l think we are easily favored to win the league and District titles again this season, and a high contender for the State title, comments Coach Whipple with the utmost confidence. After placing first in the league and at Districts two years in a row, this team has the right to feel confident. Since 1980 they have won every match which eventually led to their taking second place at State last season. With eight returning lettermen, P. Bismuti, J. Allen, E. Boe, B. Boe, E. Price, S. Near, D. Nghiem, and J. Dye, and with a strong turnout of new, talented players, this team should have no trouble with their climb to the top. Jeff Dye manages to keep his balance as he rushes to the net to return a serve. During practice, Eric Boe poses for a picture. R nv-Q-..... J. Healy began his third year as coach and he felt the team did an excellent job. With three-hour practices everyday after school, the 15-member team showed real dedication. At times they would have to travel as far as Ocean Shores, braving wind and rain, but they remained com- petitors throughout. What? No Caddies? I x John Backman attempts a birdie on Front row: B. First place is probably a tie between being chased by a bull and running around Capital Lake in a Halloween costume. Steve Murray- . . the person in my first year German class who could imitate the bell well enough to get us all of out of class several times. The infamous Eric and Ingrid have a baby film of biology fame has to be another one. l'm sure that graduation will become my most memorable event. Nancy Minnitti- .. our Senior homecoming skit. lt was by far the funniest skit during the last four years here at Olympia. Remember those 'Tempta- tions'. Joe Nolan- . . staying up until 3:00 a.m. the night before arena my senior year. QDo you remember Mike, John, Christian, and Eric?i Getting up at 5:00 a.m. for morning swim team workouts and 'T.P.ing' Backman's house at 6:00 a.m. with cross country runners Dan Heath and Pat Conner. Bonnie Lissner- . . filming our final for film ed. but forgetting the film. We spent an entire day running around town acting out scenes for Happy Birthday Janie only to discover at the end of the day - somebody forgot the film! Julie Pond- .. going to Sunriver, Oregon last spring on the music trip, Skiing for the first time, singing from the balcony, listening to Don Tacett speak about positive self-image, soaking in the hot tubs, and the LONG bus ride. Kimiko Yamane- , .. the football game in Elma. The field was a giant mud puddle, but the Bear Blitz continued. That was one night when we all loved our Bears! Alice Berschauer- . . when Good Day singers took a first place trophy at the Southwest Washington music contest. The trophy represented more than an award, it stood for all of our hard work, love for music, and ability to work together as a group. Being a member of this group has truly made my senior year a fun and memorable one. Nancy Minnitti 3.949 Charles Larson 3.825 Julie Pond 3.818 mv 'f?NFF 4.
