Having attended both the Central YVashington Col- lege of Education and the University of VVashington, you received a B.A. in education, with majors in history and economics. You are also an Alpha Tau Omega. As head of the social science department you have taught many students Washington state history or socio- economics. Teaching them to think has been your main objective. Nj L N W X X X jj R 1 ' li fin w - .I A X X i x if 4 if f . Q l fill KA jjj X5 lil tv lj wiht . t W I H Q t N ,E , if t ,tv jlja j w ji t . Serving on the faculty ticket squad and the guidance committee add to your list of duties. Your interests outside school include sports, reading, and flowers. The latter hobby consists of collection of rhododendrons and several thousand azalea plants which you have pollenized and cross-pollenized. In this way, Mr. Cannon, the Olympiad staff says thank you for the services you have so faithfully given us during the last sixteen years. t DIRECTING, ADVISING l'c-:lumps tht' most iniportztnt duty ol at high school prin- cipal IS slndving tht' l'lll'lilC'llllIlll and thc nc-cds ol tht- studt-nls und kvt-ping school policies up to dzttcf' stat lcd llon llnnt. ln'int'ip:tl ol' our high school. ,Xmong his niztny other dnlivs strc' coordinating thi' wishvs und dcnizrnds ol tht' dilli-rt'nt dc'p:n't1ni'nts through thc- lll'IJ2ll'lllll'lll hc: ids. zulvisinp, thc- St-nzttv, und working with thc counselors :ind Izncnlly in thc- lIlIt'ltt'sls ol thc stndcnts. tloniing to Olympian this yczn' to tzlkc' owl' thc tztsks ol Stipt'rintc-mlt'nt ol Pnhlit Schools wats Dr. Rollztnd Upton. .xlllllllg his nmny plains lol' niccling thc nvcds ol. cdufzttion in Ulynipizt, now and in thc luttnv, is thc building ol' at new high smhool. The Quill and Scroll organization at Olympia High is a select group reserved for few since local publication requirements have been placed at a high level, stated Ernest Anderson, adviser. A formal initiation was held in April for nine new members of this honorary which was headed by Matt Maury first semester while Betsy Top served as president of the group second semester. National Forensic League is a national high school speech honorary with a limited number of chapters in those schools that have shown consistent excellence in their special programs. The number of members and advanced degrees in the Olympia chapter of NFL makes it one of the leading chapters in the state. The group is advised by James Carlson while Dave Cammarano served as president. CUBS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE In the first football game of the season the Olympia jayvees went down to defeat at the hands of Centralia. In their next two games the Cubs found themselves set back by very close margins. After this the Cubs caught hold of themselves and came back to whip Kelso, one of the strongest jayvee teams in the state. Feeling very good about their victory over Kelso, the Cubs came back to revenge an earlier season loss to Centralia. Coached by Henry Melusky and Murry Coleman, the season showed the Cubs had won two games and lost three. After starting very well at the first of the season with their non-league games, the Cub basketball team was unable to come out on top of very many of their league tilts. With a season record of six wins and thir- teen losses the boys were able to beat Aberdeen once and Hoquiam once. Coached by Murry Coleman, the Cubs beat Montesano, Elma, Shelton, and Clover Park in non-league play. Page Sixty-one Fred Schlichting Orchestra Director David Goedecke Band and Girls Glee Director Leslie Armstrong Mixed Chorus Director MUSIC AS Mixed Chorus has been regarded as a very outstand- ing music group for many years because ol' its many wonderlul performances. This year. lor the twenty- second consecutive year, the Mixed Chorus again receiv- ed a Superior rating at the SXVXV Music Contest. They also appeared at .lellerson Alunior High, the high school assembly, the Governor's Safety Conference, Kiwanis Club, Madigan Hospital, and the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Composed ol' about thirty girls, the Cirls Clee has taken part in the Spring and Christmas concerts besides appearing at the Capital Kiwanis Club. This organiza- tion, which is open to all girls, also helped the band with their candy sale. Directing the glee through their ac- tivities of the year was David Coedecke. Boys Quartet is a new music group organized this year. This popular singing group sings selections that are mainly on the lighter side. The group, composed ol' liric Miller, Mike Fitzgerald, Danny Russell, Denis Moore, and accompanied by Marjorie Stackhouse, has appeared at many dillerent clubs and organizations. Mixed linsemble is a music organization whose pur- pose is to sing a little dillerent type ol' music than that ol regular choruses. One ol' the main achievements lor this group was the honor ol' appearing in the evening program ol' outstanding events at the SXVXV Music Con- test. This group proves what can be done with ordi- nary voices when they sing together and work hard, stated Leslie Armstrong, director. It also gives students a chance to participate in a highly trained performing group, remarked David Goedecke, director of the Olympia High School band. Main activities of the band were the three annual concerts. Also, during the year the band marched in the Santa Claus parade and played at McNeil Island. They again entered the Southwest XVashington Music Contest where they received a superior rating. A new activity for the band this year was an exchange assembly with Wfenatchee High School. ORCHESTRA Orchestra played an important part in the Christmas and Spring concerts of the O. H. S. Music Department. The group received a superior rating in the Southwest Wfashington Music Contest and was the only orchestra selected by the judges for performance in the evening festival program. Among the other activities of the year, the string orchestra played for the reception of the new Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Rolland Upton, in October. BEE-OH-VEES Advised by l.eslie Armstrong, the BOVs met monthly to plan and carry through major projects. Their main activities this year were a carnival booth and the furnishing of chairmen for all music concerts. This group has been kept purposely small with high qualifications.
