COUNCILS OF THE YE R Heading all student activities is the Senate, the stu- dent government system ol Olympia high school. Senat- ors are selected by the students on the basis ol leadership ability and scholastic average. Through this organization, every student has a voice in procedures relating to tl1e school. 'l'o appoint various standing committees is a func- tion ol' the Senate. Ghairman for lirst semester commit- tees were Bill james, Standards and electionsg Gloria Greenwood, Rulesg Sandra Musick, iilellareg and Pat Fox, Building and equipment. George Somnis headed the yearslong Student-laculty relations committee, Carole Peterson, Pointsg Brad Gierke, Assemblyg Dot Goldsby, Financeg Gloria Greenwood, Gonstitutiong and Bob itlilliams, Letters and awards. Senate Revises Constitution :Xt the beginning ol the second semester, new senat- ors were elected. Chosen to head committees were Sandra Xvoodard. Standards and elections: Jerry Kelly, Rulesg and Bill Gollee, Building and equipment. Bringing the constitution up to date, the locker condition, student control ol the cafeteria, and revising the letters and awards system were the four main items on the senate's agenda this year. Suggestions for revision ol' the constitution included scholastic requirements for executive othces and the possibility ol keeping records ol' the constitutions of every organization in school. Students Retain Cafeteria Control Senate passed a motion to have shop classes make wooden plugs lor setting lockers. Approved, also, was a bill stating that control ol the cafeteria be returned to the students. The bill was a compromise between stu- dents telling on each other and the honor system. Action was taken on revising the letters and awards system. lt was suggested that the requirements be raised and letters not given so freely. In this way, the letters would have a deeper meaning of accomplishment to the students.
