Senat- ors are selected by the students on the basis ol leadership ability and scholastic average. Through this organization, every student has a voice in procedures relating to tl1e school. 'l'o appoint various standing committees is a func- tion ol' the Senate. Ghairman for lirst semester commit- tees were Bill james, Standards and electionsg Gloria Greenwood, Rulesg Sandra Musick, iilellareg and Pat Fox, Building and equipment. George Somnis headed the yearslong Student-laculty relations committee, Carole Peterson, Pointsg Brad Gierke, Assemblyg Dot Goldsby, Financeg Gloria Greenwood, Gonstitutiong and Bob itlilliams, Letters and awards. Senate Revises Constitution :Xt the beginning ol the second semester, new senat- ors were elected. Chosen to head committees were Sandra Xvoodard. Standards and elections: Jerry Kelly, Rulesg and Bill Gollee, Building and equipment. Bringing the constitution up to date, the locker condition, student control ol the cafeteria, and revising the letters and awards system were the four main items on the senate's agenda this year. Suggestions for revision ol' the constitution included scholastic requirements for executive othces and the possibility ol keeping records ol' the constitutions of every organization in school. Students Retain Cafeteria Control Senate passed a motion to have shop classes make wooden plugs lor setting lockers. Approved, also, was a bill stating that control ol the cafeteria be returned to the students. The bill was a compromise between stu- dents telling on each other and the honor system. Action was taken on revising the letters and awards system. lt was suggested that the requirements be raised and letters not given so freely. In this way, the letters would have a deeper meaning of accomplishment to the students. This year the jayvees were coached by Norm Richardson in his first year as mentor. Getting off to a fast start, the Cubs won three out of four pre-season contests. League play proved itself less successful, however, as the seconds won two while dropping eight. Leading the Cubs in scoring were Bill Mickelson and Harvey YVest. Despite their record, the junior varsity turned in some fine performances and showed several boys to be good prospects for future varsity squads. Coach Guy Tipton and his XVashington junior High Bulldogs compiled a record of live wins and seven losses in the lSl56 campaign. This year the freshmen played in no league but rather competed against at variety of teams from this area, Opening the season with a 30-19 victory over Montesano, the Bulldogs went on to defeat St. lX'lartin's and Shelton once each and Aberdeen twice. 'Iell' Lane led the frosh in scoring, total- ing 84 points. Dick Tucker and Bob Hilden were also consistent scorers and followed closely behind Lane. Intramural sports entered the second phase as representatives of each class took to the basketball courts. Here boys who do not play on other school squads get an opportunity to see action. Copping the championship this year was the junior class. The juniors ended the regular season play in a tie with the seniors, and went on to take a play-off game from the upper-classmen. Following the juniors and seniors were the sophomores and freshmen, respectively. Individuals Place High Despite a relatively unsuccessful season as lar as victories are concerned. several Olympia tracksters proved themselves tops in individual events. Senior Bill james has turned in several line per- formances in both the low and high hurdles, consistently placing high. ln the 440 junior Dick Vosburgh has also stayed right among the leaders. Skip XVhittle, a senior who earlier in the season gave Vosburgh some tough competition, switched to the 880 and has al- ready picked up a pair ol' close seconds. ln the weights sophomore Hill Franks has shown delinite ability both lor this year and other seasons. Perhaps the most outstanding' individual thus lar this year has been junior Rick Harder who has yet to lose a race in either the l00 or 220-yard dashes. Rick has also picked up several points in the high jump. 'l'wo new school records have been set up to this point in the season. Both were set in the Aberdeen meet.
