Year Long Commiffees Olympia high school's student government is rated as one of the most democratic in the state. The Senate, law making body, probably is the best proof of this claim. Each home room has one or more representatives, who meet at least twice a month. They are selected by the students on the basis of leadership ability and scholastic average. Each senator reports back to his home room on senate discussion and also takes any problems to the senate meetings. Steve Mathews, ASB vice president, was chairman of the senate, and it was his duty to set up the agenda. Dave Wilson, ASB president, served as Ol-lS's official rep- resentative to many conferences and presided over some assemblies. Secretary lean Hansen took minutes of the senate and kept up the ASB correspondence. Treasurer Connie Thompson, who became an ex-officio member of the senate this year, was appointed and trained for her job of handling the ASB finances. Lee Kueckelhan buoyed school spirit as yell king. OHS senate has several year long committees. Brad Gierke, Assembly committee chairman advised by Miss Mary Schmitt, schedules assemblies with other schools, arranges for national assemblies and plans talent pro- grams. The social committee, headed by Mary Wagner and advised by Miss Margaret Moran and Don Thornhill, takes care of the All-high dance, the Christmas dance, the May dance and decorations for the Girls' Club tolo. Mrs. Elizabeth Miller advises the points committee, and Carol Gardner was chairman this year. This committee checks to see that no student is over-pointed by partici' pating in too many activities. Other year-long committees and their chairmen were Pat Finley, luvenile committee chairman and Connie Thompson, Finance committee chairman.
