Of course, being head man of a city's school system is a big job any time. Olympia high students appreciate his part in the educational oppor- tunities afforded them. T331 YY . . t takes work to get an education is the motto above the stage in the auditorium of Olympia high school, but the teachers know that it takes even more work to give an education. Being dean of girls is no picnic, but she likes it. lthough class instruction still is considered the most important part of the high school student's schedule, much of modern education comes through the social intercourse and cooperative effort afforded through participation in extracurricular activities. many of which are interwoven with curricular pro- grams. Teachers often labor long hours after regular instruction time to help students in these activities. Such undertakings as athletics, dramatics, journalism, debate, associated student body activities, public ad- dress system, motion picture operation, stage work, dances, mothers teas and Dads night involve careful and detailed supervision on the part of the faculty advisers. H' A ffgwta ublishing a school paper requires a great deal of effort and time- nlaking the assignments, gathering the news, writ- ing the stories, reading p r o o f s , planning the dunnnies and following through on the makeup work in the print shop. This is to say nothing of the preliminary in- struction necessary be- fore students can even begin their journalistic labors. The advertising staff must plan and lay out ads, take them to the merchants to sell, draw up copy, readf proofs, and make up the ad sections of the paper. To Helen Durbin, circulation manager, fell the lot of distribution of the paper. Exchanges to other schools were mailed out faithfully by -Ioan McCaslin, exchange editor, and her assistants, Gloria Haxton and Pat Powe. These girls also checked in hundreds of papers from other schools. The inexperienced Olympus staff put out nine editions of the paper during the school year under editorship of Bob Austin, Evelyn Bean and Merrilyn Raine, and with the guidance of Phil K. Erickson. adviser. Other members of the editorial staff were: -Ioan Fassett, assistant editor, military editor, and assistant librarian: Ida Jenkins, morgue director and librarian: Bill Mcllusker, feature editor: .leanne Henson, news editor and assistant feature editor. and Gust Angelos, sports editor. Reporters were: Don Eads, Dick Fuller, Evelyn Layton, Ida jenkins, qloyce McI.eod, Marilyn Muller, Maribeth Muller, Ann Bowler, Dave Dillon, Dave Hardy, Dan Iyall and Russell Milleson. Shortages in athletic equipment were still bad but not as acute as last year. For the first time since the pre-war years normal schedules were car- ried out in all major and minor sports. lnterest in athletics was high, with more boys turning out lor sports this year than last. This was especially noticeable in the underclassmen. Taken as a whole the Bruin's season was a success and a credit to the coaches, players. administration, and students who backed the teams with their loyal support. Although a bit green at the start, the men ol' the gridiron brought back to lVilliam XVin- lock Miller a share ol' the championship which last year's squad relinquished to Kelso and Hoquiam. Sharing the cup with Longview, the Bears suffered but one defeat and that to a nonconlerence club, Bellingham. The Olympia gridders won four and tied two of their six conference games. Basketball saw a team which was virtually inexperienced at the start ol' conference play win eight out of twelve cage encounters and split into a triangular second place tie with Aberdeen and Raymond. The formation ol' a new league ushered baseball into the limelight. The teams ol this district were divided into an liastern and lVestern division. Olympia, in the Eastern half, played games with Chehalis, Shelton and Centralia. The track team met Stadium ol' Tacoma, Aberdeen. Hoquiam. and Centralia. The Olympians played hosts to the other teams oi the district as the twentieth session ol' the Southwest lVashington track meet was staged at Stevens field. Shouldering regular schedules, golf and tennis again functioned on a pre-war scale. Capacity crowds watched all major sports this year. Football was the main attraction. with lines forming long before the gates were opened to admit the throngs. Q is SEASONED PERFORMERS ith trembling hands, but proud hearts, the class of '46 accepted their diplomas, the reward of four years of social and scholastic training. on commencement night, june 7. Although tears sparkled in some eyes, it was with gallant hopes and cherished ambitions that the seniors marched down the auditorium aisle as alumni of Olympia high school. They had come through three war years of high school with excellent records of social and academic endeavors, musical, dramatic and journalistic efforts, and wartime contributions. Standing at the doorway of adulthood ready to accept the challenge of a world in the aftermath of war, the graduates cast a melancholy glance back through the mem- ories of four years of high school. Yes, graduation is the time for reminiscing. So let's go back with the seniors through those all-too short years at O.H.S., from the time they lost their way as green freshmen until they ruled the roost as mighty seniors. Remember when- Entering O.H.S. as sightseeing freshmen, the class of '46 began their four-year educational sojourn in September, 1942. Shy, but determined, the youngsters came down off the shelf to entertain the entire school at a freshman assembly February 12. One of the main attractions was a skit, Let's Make Up, managed by Dixie Haugen and Betty Kornmesser, cochairmen, and coached by their adviser, Miss Alma Olson. Included in the castwere Donajeanne Hedwall, Pat Boswell, Larry Grant, Kenneth McDaniel, -Io Downs, Don Clausen and David Dillon. The frosh trio-Shirley Gay Williams, Virgene WVade, and joan Miller- made its first appearance, and went over big with the student body. The trio was in popular demand at many programs through the last four years . . . Twenty- seven of the class won places on the honor role that year . . . Officers leading the gallant greenies through their first years were Gene Strandness, president, Bob Peringer, vice president, Don Clausen, secretary, Wilson Wilt, treasurer, Colleen Trevis, and Virgene Wade, Girls auxiliary representatives, Bob Dawley and Stan Elberson, Boys club representatives. Don Elliott, yell leader, cheered the yearlings on. fx? , f i K ll 1 3 X 1 ' U I 1 'jjj j-A LA, Qc G ,fj7X.. UFS Ni 5 i . ,1 H cz..
