Erickson, journalism director of Olympia high school, in appreciation for his valuable guidance throughout the year in publications work. To you, Mr. Erickson, whisperedly called P. K. by your students, we dedicate this edition of the Olympiad. For although we seldom show it, we realize the work and effort you have unselfishly put forth on your publications, not just this year but every year, every day, since you first joined the faculty of O.H.S in 1935. They tell us you have a deep philosophy, a Christian insight that gives you a sincere interest in the finer and better things of life. But we know this, for have you not carried out your ideals in your teaching and curricular activities? They told us, too, of your generosity and kind heart- edness. And when we looked back, this didn't surprise us, for we can think of many little things you've done. True, you are a strict teacher and when an assignment is due we realize you mean just that. But there are many other little things, like your ability to see the student's side and sympathize with them. We remember, too, the many times when your work began to pile up and your brow would be furrowed with worry, and how perhaps you would display your certain distinctive brand of wit, much to our dismay. But no one can stay dismayed long in your presence, for the next moment you're laughing it off and we realize that you must be constantly on the go-never relaxing-putting your work before everything. Some of your intimate friends have given us a few inside tips on you. You once were editor of the University of Washington Daily, and later you were a metropolitan reporter. You spent several years in public relations work, and you have done some writing for magazines. You like music and have had a good education in it-you play the piano well and have written musical and theatrical critiques for the papers. You love the outdoors, and have always been active in athletics, being especially adept at tennis. You have had a wide variety of ex- periences, seem interested in everything. You have told us many times that the material things of life are unimportant except insofar as they contribute to the realization of spiritual values. That seems to be the essence of your philosophy, since you have stressed to us that it points the way to true happiness. As we look back again some of your most outstanding achievements come to our minds. Was it not you who revived The Whatnot, Radio club, and Quill and Scroll, and reorganized the publications into the efficient department it is today? For three years you have held the honor of being president of the Washington Association of Journalism Directors. Congratula- tions for all you've done. May this dedication convey in some Way the deep appreciation and comradeship we feel toward you. f f Theme: The 1942 Olympiad has as its theme skiing and the great winter outdoors. The staff thanks Art Schoeni, United Press bureau manager, for the thrilling photo used as an endsheet, and Clark Marble of Seattle for the many original scenics he donated. Thanks also to Fred Brown of the Olympia Ski club for the pictures he gave. The double title page was drawn by Frank Murdoch, and he made the MacArthur oil reproduced on page 8. Ken Williamson drew the class sketches. I 'IW is L L their fault . . . s 5 IGS, IT IS ALL THEIR FAULT. You can blame the staff for whatever mistakes you find in this yearbook. But you can't find fault with those of the staff who worked day in, night out, to give students an annual somewhat, at least, in keeping with standards. Most of the credit for the book goes to Virginia Forbes, editor, and Jeni Kay, assistant editor, both of whom toiled faithfully all year: Wauneta Lesh, copy editor, and Helen Wahrgren, her assistant: Carl Forsman, who took most of the pic-tures, Levy Johnston, circulation manager: Mary Lou Powers, who sold a lot of advertising to help pay for the book: Rose Marie lieek, business manager. Philip K. Erickson supervised the whole job. Shown in top picture: Johnston, Forbes, Forsman, and Beck, Kay. Some of the boys will soon be wearing khaki, and many of the girls will be engaged in war work, and when the present conflict is over-who knows when ?-it will be the job of the grads of '42 to bend their energies and talents toward the building of a new order. But the haughty seniors who march this graduation day from the Olym- pia halls of learning were not always so proud. Entering as green freshmen in awe of their superiors, the class of '42 put the first feather in their cap by instituting class yells during assembly. Though the shelf dwellers are us- ually considered shy, this class made a name for themselves by their first assembly, which had a western setting. Officers for the first year were Bud Mowell, president, Bob Eitreim, vice president, Sallie Ful- lerton, secretary-treasurer, Dale Hume, yell leader, Kenny Peters and Tim Randall, Boys club re- presentatives. Miss Grayce Rotman, now Mrs. Morrie Gumbert, and M. W. McLeod served as class advisers. Although it was hindered by an earthquake and a flu epidemic, their sophomore class as- sembly, dealing with the life of Henry Aldrich, proved an outstanding attraction. Bob Flem and Fred Keeton were class presidents first and second semester, respectively. Other officers first and second semester were: Jeff Collins and Kenny Peters, vice presidents, Normajeanne Zintheo and Pat Sullivan, secretaries, Dale Hume and Tim Randall, yell leaders, Lou Ann Schilling and Mary Jeanne Norris, Girls club representatives, Lucy Jean Boone and Sylvia Gil- filen, executive council representatives, Ward Rackey and Wes Horton, first semester, and Bob Flem, second semester, Boys club representatives. June Mad, a humorous story of a young g1rl's first love, was the junior play. Elverna Amund- sen and Dottie Mangan were cochairmen. The prom, the theme of which was the Annapolis sweet- heart ball, proved one of the best in the history of O.H.S. A cabaret was held in the cafeteria after the dancing, and breakfast was served. General chairmen for the prom were Pat Sullivan and Virginia Mekkes. Class sweaters for the year were navy blue and White. A fantastical assembly was staged Friday of junior week, with Barbara Lewis chairman. Activities Monday included the Junior Jamboree edition of The Olympus, edited by Bob Eitreim, and the crowning of the supreme rulers for the week-Normajeanne Zintheo and Art McCarty. Hello Walk observance, lunchtime programs in the cafeteria, the playing of a special pep band in the halls, and the taking over of classes by third-yearers featured Wednesday's program. The jubi- lant juniors wore class colors and took over student control Thursday. Junior week chairmen were Normajeanne Zintheo and Lou Ann Schilling. Junior class officers: first semester-Bob Flem, president, Mel Drescher, vice president, Sylvia Gilfilen, secretary, Dale Hume, yell leader, Ward Rockey and Joe Preston, Boys club representatives, second semester: Bob Eitreim, president, Nor- majeanne Zintheo, secretary, Johnny Hamilton, yell leader, John Mowell and Bill Twohy, Boys club representatives. A . 1 HUUP'S Who HE END of the 19412 Northern division league schedule found the big three- -Olympia, Hoquiam and Aberdeen--with ten wins and two losses apiece, tied for first place and the right to go to the state meet in Seattle. In a drawing made by school offi- cials, Olympia became the lucky num- ber one team. Hoquiam secured second position, Aberdeen third. Coach M. W. Rockey's team was successful in downing Marysville 37- 31 in the first tourament game at Seattle, but lost to Everett 31-20, and then dropped a 27-42 decision to Lynden which put them out of the running. Hoquiam took first place honors in out-lasting Bremerton 36-34 in the championship game. Having the honor of representing the first Olympia team at the meet since 1933 were Ralph Bettcher, George Gilbert, Ward Roekey, Dale Hume, Andy Harlin, Jack Van Eaton, Bob Hankins, Bud Lewis, Harry Sea- gram and Lloyd Routt. Donald Rar- rett attended as the Bears' manager. The Olympia Bears chalked up seven conference wins before the llo- quiam Grizzlies and Friday the 13th proved too much for them, as they took a 43-29 beating. Ward Rockey and Ralph Bettcher won All-State honorable mention. Boys winning Big O's: Ralph Bettcher, scoring ace for Olympia who missed being high man for the league by three pointsg Dale Hume, who paced Ralph during most of the sea- son and helped boost the latter's total: Captain Ward Rockey, smooth ball handler and good team man, who came in third in the standing of the Bear scorers, George Gilbert, Olym- pia's lanky guard, who played stellar ball in starting roles, Jack Van Eaton, steady player, and Andy Ilarlin, for- ward from Cleveland high of Seattle, who battled for the fifth starting posi- tion. Bob Hankins and Bud Lewis are juniors who received Big O's, the ball club next year to be built around them and Lloyd Routt. Olympia's Cubs took third place honors in the R squad league, Ilo- quiam and Aberdeen tieing for l'irst. Earning second letters were Tom Marshall, Dick Farrow, Cameron Kyle, Rill Yule, Jack Taylor. Dave Swanson, Dick Taylor, Jack Martin, Lloyd Routt, Jim Sulenes, Bob Foth- ergill and Bob Dunn. Fothergill, Cub captain, emergen top scorer with 56 points. Lloyd Routt. varsity reserve, plunked 53 tallies to take the runnerup spot. With only one returning lettermann- Don Nelson' the team really had to keep its eye on the hall to equal the playing of more experienced teams in the Southwest Wash- ingt on league. Olympia came home with third place honors from a meet at Chehalis May 2. First and second places were taken by Longview and Aberdeen, respectively. Other teams com- peting were: Chehalis, Hoquiam, Raymond and Centralia. Although no other matches have been played at the time of this writing, Adolph Larson, coach, thinks it safe to predict a fair season. With the exception of Leston Coleman, the whole squad is expected to re turn next year. ' L Q had if. km? , ,Q-N4 LTHOUGH other sports have not been much affected by the war, tennis was dealt a crippling blow by transportation re- strictions. As a result, the Southwest Washington tennis tourna- ment, scheduled for May 23 at Centralia, was the second and last of the season. The first match, with Aberdeen April 18, was lost by a score of 3 to 2. A match with Salem, Oregon, to have been held in early May, was called off because of rain, although the Salem players were here and ready to play. all ,,, , ,,, 'fvyglp i Nef- L X3 if QQ' 2 43- S 4. -Q at be ,. it , t f 4 Q 1 t 0 ' ,', f Q ,if W v 9 ' :rv ,.r v en' fc ff, f e -f f 1 , .7l-. Bob Healy and his orchestra swung into the spirit of the occasion. For the first time in years a member of the male species overseered the duties of the social commit- tee. A truly festive atmosphere was created on December 19 by the welcoming of the graduates, the customary Christmas tree, the general holiday spirit of all, and the music of Louis Grenier's orchestra. One of the delightful features of the band was its introduction of the conga line. To the strains of the processional music of Bob Healy and his orchestra, the traditional crowning of the King and Queen of the May took place May 2 at the annual spring dance. Queen Normajeanne Zintheo and King Ward Rockey were hailed as supreme rulers. The entire court is shown in the upper picture, opposite page. Writ- ing and staging original scripts was one of their important activities. 'l'he interesting study ot' mike technique, that sterling quality which enables one to speak correct- ly into a microphone, was delved into thoroughly by the radioites. 'I'he crucial test of the study came each week when lVliss Ilelena Jen- kins, adviser, led her charges down to station KGY, where they dis- played their talents in a 15-minute play. Une ot' the highlights of the year was an all-male production of Little Red Riding Ilood. So popular was the presentation that it was performed in assembly for the student body. Jimmy Grant starred in the leading role as Little Red Riding Ilood. 'l'he On, Olympia radio pro- gram was revitalized in 1935 by the journalism department under the advisership of Philip K. lflrick- son. Later it was taken over by the music department. This year the broadcasting class was origin- ated and again the radio program changed hands. The new name Olympia high school Workshop of the Air immediately caught on and students eagerly glued their hearing organs to their radios. O BIC heard and not seen might well be the motto of the stage crew, for although this group of students is not actually seen, their work is in evidence at any of the entertainment features during the year. Members ol' the stage crew build the attractive sets used as backgrounds for the various plays. They are the ones that regulate the lights during assemblies and they also pull the curtains. Besides all of these chores which must be carried out to perfection, they do numerous other jobs. Under the guiding hands of manager George Mottman and adviser Robert Eccles, the crew, for the first time in its history, attended regular class periods each day. Formerly it was all outside work. Also new this year is the addition of girls to the crew. On the staff this year were: Willa Hartman, Bob Hanson, Willis Leek, John Luft, Ted Robinson, Corinne Schilling, Dick lit-klund, Ralph Lindsay, James Porn, Chesley White, Alvin Woolworth and George Mottman. Members of this organization also take care of the makeup and cos- tuming of characters in many of the class plays and assemblies. The cup now rests permanently on the trophy shelves of O.H.S., for any school winning the cup three times is thereby the owner. Not satisfied with winning the cup, Betty Lou Gerth and Bob Fothergill gained recognition as giving the most out- standing performances for girl and boy. The group presented the play, Ile, a colloquial expression meaning oil. The story revolves around the adventures of a whaling captain and his wife and crew, who have been at sea for two years. The important decision of turning back, as his wife asks, before she goes mad, or of pursuing the at last sighted whales, is the choice that confronts the captain. Deciding the course of pursuing the whales, the captain witnesses the spectacle of his wife's going insane. Bob played the role of the captain and Betty Lou portrayed the wife. Members of the cast tsee picture right center, this pagel were Bob Dinsmore, Jimmy McHeffey, Jack Peringer, Bob Fothergill and Betty Lou Gerth.
