Ceneral Isaac Ingalls Stevens, the first governor as well as the most prominent man identified with the early history of Washington territory, had a quiet and dignified appearance. Likewise his mansion. A man of keen mental ability and dynamic character, he gave to his state a life of indefatigable service motivated by an inextinguishable faith in the fu- ture. Only a small backroam in the Paclzwood residence on Newqually bot- tom near Chambers Prairie, this first institution of learning in Thurston County had no school room furnishings or equipment. The curriculum was limited to the 3 R's and the teacher received the remarkable salary of S20 a month. JL'
