After the horror of Viet Nam and the tragic experience of Wat- ergate, it would be natural for a nation suffering from inflation and high unemployment to shrug its shoulders and await the inevi- table doomsday But l don't see that. I see the excitement of learning burning brightly in the eyes of this senior class. I see achievement and ded- ication and hope springing from each breast. What this generation needs is a restoration of confidence. This whole country needs an optimis- tic outlook. We know that the so- lutions to the problems we face are not easy. Many haven't been developed. Our finest minds are not addressing themselves to these problems. But the solutions and the minds to create the solu- tions are here. I have every confidence that a Thomas Jefferson or a Martin Luther King or a Winston Chur- chill is here waiting to come forth. Our current despair is but a prelude to a better society, a bet- ter world, a better life. Exciting and rewarding new ideas and prospects will begin with the Class of '75, l know, be- cause l know you. Sincerely, Mervin L. Krimins Principal CABINET Seaied: WALTER NACKONEY, RITA De- ER, PHIL!P DEHNICK, JAMES WOODSIDE. NICUOLO, LYLA BUDNICK, MARIE BAUER JOSEPH PUTRO, THOMAS LYNCH and and MICHAEL DiGIACOMO. Standing: JOSEPH HOWELL. THEODORE VARBALOW, RAPHAEL BECK- To the Class of 1975: Graduating classes, all of them bright-eyed and hopeful of the future, have come and gone, and, I suppose that many words of advice to graduating seniors have been written countless times. Yet, hackneyed or hollow, such words are meant to convey the sincere concerns all of us feel for you who are leaving us. A theme such as Reach the Higher Ground seems to em- body all ofthe Go-Forth-lnto-The- World messages ofthe past with a wisdom that is ageless and fer- vent. It suggests a rejection of the shabby and meaningless. lt re- flects a desire to attain what is real and true. lt is the highest goal which you can set for your- self and, as such, it becomes the best advice anyone can give you. Now, as you enter a new phase of life, it is essential to put away the common trivial wants and aim for those goals which will make your life meaningful. It is by no means unreasonable to believe in dreams for they are, in a sense, the Higher Ground. Therefore, set your goals and go forth with a new strength and vigor rememberingthat the sky is always the limit. Sincerely, Michael DiGiamomo Vice-Principal VICE-PRINCIPALS Sv l l 'YL i 11:2 GX . is N15 fifvfgfitrsl of :f . - -' 1 Y ki. ' A 1 r '!,?'e-lint. Y L i fu: 1 X' Michael DiGiacomo Walter N, Nackoney Thomas G. Lynch, Ill ff To the Class of 1975: In 1963, the American Mount Everest Expedition attained its objective on May lst when Na- wang Gombu and Jim Whittaker reached the snowy summit of Everest at 1 P.lVl. by way of the South Col route. The final stages of the great adventure had ac- tually begun on February 13 with the expedition's arrival at Kat- mandu. This represented six weeks of time to finally get into position and into physical shape for their attempt to reach the higher ground. And all this su- perhuman effort was in the spirit of great adventure. If Noah in the urgency for sur- vival had not had the Ark on which to depend, his reach for the higher ground probably would have matched the epic ef- forts of modern mountaineers. Then, there is the other kind of striving which Dag Hammer- skjold defined as, Never let suc- cess hide its emptiness from you, achievement its nothingness, toil its desolation. And so keep alive the incentive to push on further, that pain in the soul which drives us beyond ourselves. Whether a reach for the higher ground is a matter of high adven- ture or sheer survival or a matter of personal achievement, may your reach in life as a member of the June '75 Class be a high one and a good one! Sincerely, Walter N. Nackoney Vice-Principal To the Class of 1975: Whatever your future may be, l hope you will be both happy and successful, and that you will find great satisfaction in your life's work. I also hope you have many happy recollections of your days at Olney. Your class theme this year, Reach the higher ground, is an excellent one. l hope it means that you wish to go on to better things. For those of you who will continue to reach for the higher ground, the future is bright. Political, economic, and social forces have developed which we have not yet learned to under- stand or control. Many people, especially adults have become disillusioned and discouraged by the events of the day. This is a challenge to those of you who will reach the higher ground for you will be the leaders who will be charged with the responsibility for solving and resolving prob- lems tomorrow. It is also impera- tive that all people receive an education sufficient to equip them with the resources to cope with the tremendous problems in our tense, rapidly changing world. Remember crack- ing test tubes, the bright colors, and figuring out RaRiAuH2O. Ride the ferrous whell of memo- ry! Biology. We should've gotten physical fitness awards for climb- ing all those steps! Think of all the meals you wouldn't have skipped, of all the pounds you wouldn't have lost, without look- ing at those appetizing, smelly frogs 6th period. The sliding rules of physics, sliding in our heads, poking holes in each other's fingers for blood in medical technology, learning some solutions to ecology's prob- lems in environmental science ... If you see the troops in blue on the first floor, don't worry. The navy isn't invading us. lt's only the girls on their way to basement gym! We certainly had a ball in gym. But no matter how many years pass, our pictures will never change, and we will remain in the mind's eye, ever young. So let it be with the ideas and ideals we have tried to give you at Olney High. Hopefully they will remain ever young, ever vigorous, guiding and assisting you as you move through the marvelous experience called lite.l wish you luck in that experience, for you will need it. But even more l wish you the strength to stare life in the eye and triumph over it. And when you have a moment, look through these pages and softly remember. Adams, President: Geraldine Croker, Treasurer Dear Classmates, Now that we look back on the years that have passed, we tend to smile at all accomplishments and wish we had our problems to relive. But the past, as beautiful as it might have been, is una- vailable to us now. Many of the people today do not think when they make daily decisions. Remember, the world would be in much better shape if people would only put their brains in gear before they put their bodies into motion. During our years here we have grown in maturity and knowledge and are now ready to take our place in today's society as men and women. Some of us have chosen to contin- ue our education and others are seeking job oppor- tunities in the business world. Whatever your choice, strive . . . work . .. and reach the higher ground. For all their help, my sincere thanks to the Trojan Staff, especially Susan, my co-editor. lVlay all the joys of happiness and success come to all of you in the Class of 75. Fondly. Joyce Lynn Bailey X . TUQIU QV' Dear Everyone, From dissected crayfish to gown fittings, we've stuck together. Now promising to remember, we separate. l'd like to leave you my favorite accumulated guidelines for survival out there 1. Love the life you live, so you can livethe life you love. 2. The only way to have your cake and eat it too, is to have two pieces. 3. If there's something you really value, let it go free. If it doesn't come back, it was never yours: if it does, love it forever. 4. Don't fill your life with years, but fill your years with life. Thanks to all who helped with the Trojan. Until we meet again, at class reunions or by chance, l wish you the essentials of happiness - something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. Good health, good luck, and goodbye. As our newest members, you will be helping with scholarships for future students, aiding in projects such as the electronic scoreboard we presented to the school in 1971, receiving newsletters each fall and spring, and getting help with planning your future class reunions. The Olney High School Alumni Association welcomes its newest members, the Class of 1975, and extends sincere congratulations to you on the achievement of one of life's important goals - your high school diplo- ma. Be proud of it and let it inspire you to the attainment of future goals. We wish you the best of luck and look forward to reporting your successes in future issues of the Alumni Newsletter.
