Korsh, Ottowo FOREWO RD Throughout the centuries, Peace has been that elusive treasure which men have held dearly for a moment, only to have it slip from their grasp time and time again. Pessimists for ages have branded wor as one of man's instincts, but for people who are op- timistic about the future, this cyni- cism is unfounded War is the most deadly curse that mankind has ever known, In the past when war was fought conventionally, it was a threat of great destruction, but today with the massive power which man now wields, it is a threat of utter annihi- lation. Peace must be attained if the human race is to survive. lt has been said that Peace will come to man when man realizes that war is not the answer to the world's problems. It was many years ago when this idea was stated, and man must hold hope for the future now as he did then. A time to love, and a time to hate, A time of war, and a time of peace. Ecclesiastes 3:8 F lf the civilization is to sur- vive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds to live together, and work together, in the same world, at peace. The work, my friends, is peace . . yes, an end, forever, to their impractical, unrealistic settlement of the differences between governments by the mass killing of peoples. from FDR's speech written on the eve of his death. 'Q 2:S'-:'0?AN'M45!o202 PRINCIPAL To the Members of the Class of i967 Dear Friends: It has been a great pleasure to know the members of the Class of 1967 and to watch your progress through Olney. Now, as your graduation approaches, I want to congratulate you on the successful completion of your high school work and to extend to you my best wishes for c most successful future, lf you would be successful, there are four things you must do: l. Shoot for the moon, A high aim is basic. 2. Work hard and intelligently. 3, Recognize opportunities and take ad- vantage of them. 4. Be prepared for your vocation and keep your education up to date. The education you have received at Olney is the foundation for your future, but you must not assume that it will suffice for your lifetime. You must provide the leadership in the twenty-first century, and no one can predict what the world will be like then. You will live in on age of fast changes and of great advances in all areas of knowledge, The world will require leaders who have kept pace with new develop- ments and new knowledge. Be one of them. The need for the unskilled will continue to diminish, the oppor- tunities for the skilled and the educated will be many. Be sure you are always ready to grasp your chance when it comes. As you leave Olney for institutions of higher learn- ing or to enter business, industry or the armed forces, I want you to know that your many friends at Olney will continue to be interested in your progress. Keep in touch with your alma mater. We shall be happy to learn of your achievements. Cordially yours, Marion L. Stuart Principal Lower: Cabinet: from left: Edward Kornblatt, Jack Wapen, Donald Yonker, lsadore Abrams, Walter Nackoney, Robert Sehl, Myron Harrison, Maxwell Samotin, Theodore Varbalow, Mildred Osler, and Leon Shairnan. CABINET VICE-PRINCIPALS To the Class of June l9671 Left: Young people are largely on the getting side. ln your education you have received the gifts of centuries - mental and spiritual treasures from great authors, skills from me- chanical inventions, the gifts of nature, the wonders of sci- ence, moral precepts from clergy, parents, and teachers. We are all daily receiving and taking from those about us. May you, in your turn, be inspired to pass these gifts on, As you enter adult life, you will have greater opportunities to give to others, to lead them to share in the accumulated blessings of the ages, The successes you attain will be the more en- joyable as you give of yourself. Sincerely, Walter N, Nackoney To the Class of June l967: Center: Wherever you go, whatever you do, our best wishes go with you, The years you have spent with us will long be remembered. Each one of you has left his mark at Olney High School. Your achievements in grades, athletics, and student activities have combined to make Olney a better school. Our only regret is for the small percentage who fal- tered in the race. May you have the courage, perseverance, and wisdom to shape a happy future. We, who remain here, hope and pray for your success. Sincerely, lsadore Abrams To the Class of June l967: Next: ln dedicating your yearbook to the theme of Peace, you have chosen wisely, For centuries men have yearned for peace and nations have sought to preserve it, Yet history shows us that men and nations have never succeeded in achieving an enduring peace, The graves of thousands of youths who have died in their countries' wars are mute re- minders of the tragic consequences of the failure of nations to exist peaceably with one another. Peace will come when nations learn to compromise their differences, to understand each other's aims and aspirations, and to encourage people-to-people friendship. Men, too, what- ever their creed, color, or economic status, must learn to live in harmony with one another, Only then can there be hope of peace abroad and peace at home. May every one of you, the members of the Class of June l967, by your own example, advance the cause of Peace. Sincerely, Jack A. Wapen 13 :ii KPN.. They have the lr-lerculean task of pre- paring rosters for all of Olney's students Since we now have computers to aid them in this job, they rnust play doctor to the computer casualties , and answer questions like, Why can't I have 9 lunches? The Grade Chairmen also help mis- placed students, who, through some error on the part of the computers, have found themselves in Latin lV, when they be- long-in Spanish ll. If you've never tried to find out why there are 397 students too many in 3rd lunch, you don't know what it is to suffer, Despite all of the aggravation, our Grade Chairmen holp up very well, and each year these dedi- cated people dive into their work. And would you believe . . . that not one of them has ever drowned? Counselors: If ever an Olney student has a problem, scholas- tic or otherwise, there are many understanding and helpful people to whom he can turn, The counselors can help us to decide whether we should major in Zoology, or History of America before i492 in college, Olney's counselors are al- ways ready, willing, and able to help us with just such problems, At the beginning of each school year, our two college counselors begin to realize how helpful tranquilizers can be. With half of the Senior Class charging into their offices with questions, college applications, and more questions, they dis- play amazing patience and strength, Without the help of the college counselors, we would have to choose our own majors without any guidance, and attempt those terrifying appli- cations alone. 15 ART 9754? Since the English language is the basis of ourcommunication and the criterion by which we judge a man's intelligence, the pressures of collateral reading assignment deadlines, and oh yes, the demands of those never-ending Word Wealth quizzes, have not been in vain. Throughout our years at Olney, we have increased our vocabularies, and have learned to under- stand and appreciate Shakespeare with the aid of our teachers and those yellow and black striped life-savers. Before we de- clare the study of the English language a course in self- torture, we must thank our very capable and devoted English Department, under the auspices of Miss Osler, for helping us to improve and almost perfect our command of our native tongue. As you walk around the third floor, home of the Olney Lan- guage Department, you may hear many strange and foreign sounds emitting from the language rooms. Here you will find Olney's dedicated language teachers trying to explain the post participle to students who are interested only in the opposite sex, Despite these obstacles, the teachers manage to get the point across. The students who take a language, should by the time they graduate, have attained a measured amount ot tluency in the language at their choice. Not that anyone is ready to become a Latin lover, or a Spanish bull- tighter, but that each student should, with little difficulty understand what is being said to him. Provided that Latin IV isn't dead to you, and German hasn't dislocated your tongue, you will enjoy learning a language. It you manage to survive those grueling language lab sessions, then you will be entitled to be called senor, and you will then be a Latin lover . LANGUAGE in 1 L .gf ' FM 3,12 :QE AEI! There is a Senate, Student Court, and a House of Representa- tives. Each of these units has its own separate function, and they are all vital parts of the organization. The Student Court is made up of eight students who judge cases of stu- dents which are sent to them. There is a Chief-Justice, a Sergeant-at-Arms, and a Secretary. Together with the other students on the Court, they try to understand the problems of the students, and to handle these difficulties accordingly. The Senate is comprised of students from each grade who are elected during the school election. The Senators, together with the members ofthe House of Representatives, decide what course the S.A. will take during the year. They also vote on matters concerning the students and provide many stu- dent services. Olney students can be proud of their school government because it gives students a chance to see and operate an or- ganization which is very similar to our country's government. Highlights The sound of the busy typewriters, the shrieking voices of the page editors as they prepare their pages for the printer, and the steady blare of WIBG are some ofthe familiar sounds which can be heard from Room 23l, office of the Olney Highlights. Guided by Mrs. Ella Patton of the English Department, the Highlights has won numerous awards in recent years for its outstanding quality, The main duty of any newspaper is to keep its readers informed. Olney's paper has and will con- tinue to fulfill this duty. On the other side of the coin is the fun which one can have in Room 23l. This room is used by the staff to stare books, coats, smelly gym suits, and other items necessary to student life. There, as you enter the door, you may be greeted by pictures of Alfred E, Neuman, Batman, and other assorted oddities. The room is a potential safety hazard, for when deadline time rolls around, the number of bodies to be found in the office defies imaginationl Whatever happens, the Highlights is almost always on time, and the students who are on the staff are sure to have enjoyed many hours of the informal atmosphere which prevails in Room 23l. 46 Sponsor-Ella S. Freshmen gasp, Sopho- mores swoon, Why? Olney's football team is busy on the grid- iron battling another Public League team. The Trojans al- ways have their shining moments and this season was no exception. Under the able direction of coach Adam Donzanti and assistant coach John Smith, the varsity team upset Rox- borough. The victory was even a bigger win because the game was taped and later televised. Two names were frequently mentioned by the T.V. sport's announcer, that of Erv Beale and Clint Newton. The analogies between Beale and a Mack Truck and a Tank made Olney students realize how im- portant Beale was to the team. When there wasn't a hole in the Roxborough line Beale made one. The combination of Beale, Newton, and the strong teamwork of the rest of the squad brought the final score to Olney 20, Roxborough 6. Another highlight of the season was the annual Thanks- giving Day Game with Lincoln High. This year marked the first year in recent school history that we have had a Home- coming Queen. Adele Smith and her court of honor rode around the stadium welcoming home all graduates, recent and not so recent. The capacity crowd was rewarded with an Olney victory. The squad played a strong game to defeat Lincoln 26 to 6. ....,,,,Q vi 3 76 i 2 -415 ,ff f Upper: Basketball team - Coach, Dante Spizzirri. Dea r Classmates, As a generation of young adults who are living under the constant threat of nuclear war, we find it most fitting to dedicate our yearbook to the cause of Peace. Our generation has never really known depressions and warg we were born into prosperous times and this is reflected in our attitudes towards life, The ever-foreboding threat of nuclear war is something that we have learned to accept, but fear, Mankind is now existing under the possibility of almost complete annihilation, and it is for this reason that peace must be attained. l hope that the graduates of June, I967, will hold this hope in their minds and try to help in the future with finding Peace. In closing, I would like to thank Mr. Hoffman for his guidance and great patience through many panic stricken days, and the staff for their hard work and inspiration. Without their work, the yearbook could never have been realized. l hope that you as the members of the Class of June, I967, will dis- tinguish yourselves wherever the path of life may lead you. I wish you the best of everything, Rochelle 103 J F W1 I in 1 W, '56 M W0 6 6 'ig if in L - 6 3 iv new rw Ji 1. f M W ii Class History ApHl1966 AA6y 1966 June 1966 September 1966 October 1966 November 1966 December 1966 That was close! Farewell 108 ff Af As the months quickly went by, each of us knew that our clays at Olney High School were numbered, and we already began to reminisce nostalgically about the four wonderful years which we were finishing at Olney. The feeling which a senior has can hardly be put into words. lt is one of anxiety, hope, nostalgia, and uncertainty, yet we are glad that our graduation is imminent. As we look back we can see that we have just completed four years of school, during which we ma- tured both mentally and physically. The past four years will probably be remembered by most students as their best years, years in which we grew up and were finally treated as adults, or the years in which we had the most fun and freedom. Olney has become an integral part of us, and as we leave and say our final farewell, we know that we will never forget the school which educated us and guided us during our formative years. lO9 ,.
