It is impossible to sum up the astounding, incredible years 1900-1950, but it is even harder to predict what the next fifty years will hold. In our yearbook, we, the graduates of Iune 1950, shall try to provide a forward and back- ward look at our times-a story of how the present grew out of the past, and how the future is growing out of the present. Our years at Olney prepared us for the task which lies ahead, and we enter the future on a note of hope. We are the giants of the twentieth century - the statesmen, the businessmen, the great American public. The tate of the world-our fate-is in our hands. That is the century's challenge to us! We are on the threshold of the second halt ot the century- the gateway to a new life. We must mold the destinies of tomorrow. We think of the achievements the past years have brought, finding in them not only a cause for pride in our heritage, but faith and confidence in a golden future for us. Mns. SCANLAN Mmjwwn DEDICATION In appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for us, We, the class of Iune '50, dedicate our yearbook to our sponsors, Mrs. Scanlan and Mr. Marhefka. They have given freely and cheerfully of their time and energy in order to make our class a better one. Mrs. Scanlan, with her Warm understanding of our needs, has given us help when we were troubled. Mr. 4 GCN ax TQ oun SPONSDR Marhefka has always been ready for any new scheme we might devise. No class could have asked for two more wonderful sponsors. Their untiring efforts and expert supervision have made our class a whole unit instead of many scattered sections. They molded and shaped our unit into a class with spirit and ingenuity. They have been a source of constant inspiration to us, and it is to them this yearbook stands as a token of our friendship and devotion. 5 COMPOSITE INFORMALS OF TROJAN STAFF Working on the dummy Planning the art work Considering financial problems Q, Debating a problem Artists at work l 5 TROJAN STAFF G WEINER DAVID Ross Editor-in-Chief Art Editor MR. Claire Boothe Luce, a woman of prominence in the political world, Einstein, a genius of the Modern Age, Madame Curie, discoverer of radiumg Pershing and Eisenhower, the leaders of our Armies in the last two wars, Booker T. Washington and Horace Mann, men who made trends in the field of education. Thus the world recognizes its great. Their advance to achieve their goal of a better world has been a long and difficult path. We, too, travel a road, but one less arduous and cemented by the help and encouragement of our teacher. In these pages of our yearbook we, the class of Iune '50, would like to recognize our leaders: the principal, the teachers, and the counsellors, all the people who have guided our way through high school. For the past few years these have been the great and important in our lives. We appreciate a wonderful faculty, whose dedication and devotion will enable us to master successfully whatever the future holds. 10 an , .- In Wifi N ,5 Huw ' I W3 5 Y-,x.AlV' .f ' 7 , ' J 4 ol4 'T ff' Xf . -N W4 wa x NIIMZ' - -X 'WML 4 X 0, fixing? 5 gy I MQ, g V9 DORIS ' i X ix E 5 S Xi 1:-XX X NN- iq' -Q . The frontier had disappeared but the pioneer spirit of virile crea- tiveness lingered on. Freedom to think, to act, to contrive his own security was the prevailing impulse of American youth. Like old furniture, horse-cars and celluloid collars, initiative in 1950 seems to have worn out, the need to struggle has been reduced by a thousand inventions. Individual enterprise has shifted to mass effort, and independence seems losing out to social dependency. As you receive congratulations at graduation, and thrust open the gateway to a new life, I hope your path ahead will point upward, and require sturdy climbing. Let pride in your heritage bring resolution to find again that declining pioneer impulse of the past five decades, that your life may be one ot creative usefulness to all Good luck, and God bless you. 1 12 ASSISTANTS TO THE PRINCIPAL In this, our yearbook, we, the Class of Iune 1950, would like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Fink and Dr. Green- wood for the understanding they have extended to us. Their sincerity, and invaluable advice have often brought us to the solution of a problem. To their encouragement and sensible suggestion we owe many of the good times We have had at Olney. Dr. Greenwood's humour, Mrs. Fink's smile and genial hello have made each morning more pleasant and furnished the good start each day. We thank these two friends and are well aware of the part they played in preparing us for the years to come. 13 FACULTY C 0 m m e r C e RICHARD M. HOLME Helen A. Carrnalt james E. The many clubs and groups which we joined certainly are now a part of the past. As we remember the years before 1950, we will recall how we came in contact with new people, shared experiences, and worked together harmoniously in our extra-curricular activities. In the Fellowship Club and the International Relations Club we discussed the problems confronting us as citizens of the world and learned what we could do to change conditions. Our literary endeavors were represented in the Highlights and the Palla- dium . Will we ever forget how the staff of the Highlights provided the latest news of the school, alumni, community and world? Our Debating Team, as always, distinguished itself, both in the school and in inter-school competition, We will always remember the wonderful entertainment the A Cappella Choir and Orchestra provided for us. Nor will we ever be able to repay the Trojanettes and Trojanaires, the Library, the Student Staff, and the Lunchroom monitors, for the work they did cheer- fully and willingly. The clubs are certainly now memories, but it would be impossible to say that they are only memories for us. We will in the second half of the 20th century, often be reminded that they gave each individual a chance for self-expression. Certainly every club, whether it was a service club, a social club, a career club, or a club which discussed community and world problems in some way prepared us for the future. After 1950 we will often look back and treasure our memories of our extra-curricular activities. and we will always be grateful for the fact that Olney offered us so many opportunities to prepare ourselves for the years following 1950. 28 ,W- 'C-'IW 1 . Their school term is completely filled with engagements at banquets, contests, and other schools. It is with a sense of deep pride and affection that the residents of Olney and other communities come to hear their inspiring work at their annual Christmas concert,They are also rated by expert judges as the top-most high school a cappella choir in the city. But all this could not be accomplished Without the capable and unequaled leadership of Mr. Nitsche, their director. We have some of the greatest athletes of all times on our honor roll. Babe Ruth, Iim Thorpe, lack Dempsey, Babe Didrikson, Ioe Louis, Eleanor Holm, Ioe DiMaggio, and Bill Tilden are just some of the sportsmen that the world has watched and applauded. The rules have changed and the players have come and gone, but one idea never changes-the will to win. This is the spirit that changed Ben Hogan from a hopeless cripple to the giant that broke his own record in the Los Angeles Open Golf Tourna- ment of 1950. More and more, America is taking an outstanding position in gaining new honors at the Olympics. ln school lite likewise, the idea of a sound mind in a sound body is becoming more important. Better than winning is the idea of fair play. It is this idea which makes a team great, rath-er than its victories. We, at Olney, are filled with that spirit. Our grandstands are the fullest and our cheers the loudest, our enthusiasm the greatest and our teams the fightingest . Olney has had this fervor for winning since the school first opened, and we'1l con- tinue to have it as long as there is such a thing as sports. 52 C-232' FQ - f CTV? :,' iilhhuuuuu L .J - A . The boys never stopped moving for a second and they kept the games fast and thrill-packed. Although we didn't always win, the team fought on till the end. The excel- lent floor game of Ace Dezube and Shel Saffren, the light of Arnold Feldman and lay Fenster under the basket, and the all around great ball-handling of Norm Knopman fascinated us in every game. The team's sweetest victory was at Frank- ford where we defeated the Pioneers 64 to 57 in an overtime period. Many thanks to Coach Spielburg for his patient under- standing. 55 Football Team The spirit of the team and of the loyal Olney rooters is something that we'1l never forget. Despite the dearth in victories, the team provided many thrills during the season. Long after w'e've forgotten the final scores, we'1l remember the hoarse sound of our voices after an afternoon of cheering, the camaraderie on a crowded bus returning form an away game, and the wonderful sportsmanship of Iack Bloomberg, Bernard Flick, Edward Graves, Ioseph Gurnmel, Iohn Quinn, Robert Scowcrott, and Michael Shupp. 56 Soccer Team Coach-Mr. Brink Manager-Lee Pinsky Senior Members-George Ludwig Iohn Kramer Don Price Richard Fluge Golf Team Coach-Mr. Powell Captain-Henry Icxnzcmo 57 wwe,-new 1' . f 1:-'11 ' fl- -' . :fM4,425,wxafiezweweiwffemwwiswiffixfesifwwzzaavwruwi Gym Team This year our gym team came closer to regaining the city title than ever before. With eight games on their schedule, the team won every game to hold the Public High Champion- ship. There were two main factors which contributed to the success ol the team. One was the superlative coaching ol Miss Catherine McPeak. The second factor was the members of the team. Outstanding for their razzle dazzle shooting were Dot Conley, Lill Haas, and Marge Kline. The guarding was superbly done by Wacker, Peterson, Coe and Ganther. In the terms ahead these girls are sure to carry on with their high level championship play. It was in this year that our efforts were culminated, that We began to survey our gains and determine their use. Though all the years were an experience in social relationship, it was in the senior year that We began t-o appreciate our friendships. It was the year when We finally knew everyone, when our friends numbered a whole class instead of a Whole club. lt Was the year we realized We had some great classmates. It was the time, too, when We became friends with our teachers- teachers whom we had not known, had never recognized, suddenly became our guardian angels. And it was the year, most of all, of our prom, our pins, our trip, our graduation, the year of all those memos of the senior. 70 l V X1 We J V E? , -K Qwz X FN f W W N N N lg' 5 ff -, . r SCHOQL 1 xx, SNAPS V MOST INTELLIGENT Marcia Kaplan Arthur Buslik SENIDR I g,,.-. 0. my 1 I N I S MOST DRAG WITH THE FACULTY Rhoda Rosen I Jerry Dortort ' 353. , nl . - Q,,, I. --f- MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Flora Eisman Norman Weiner BEST DRESSED Natalie Kramer Saul Coplan TYPICAL OLNEYITES Nancy Simmons Gerhart Duerr E' I , f 2- ' ,.,. Mb-v M67 5 MR. DEBUS For many years Olney High School has been fortunate in having Mr. Eugene Debus as a sincere friend and teacher. Olney has profited by his efforts as School Treasurer, S. A. Sponsor, member of the Physical Educa- tion Department, Co-ordinator, and coach of the Baseball Team. Many students have turned to him for advice and counsel, and have been rewarded by his guidance and friendship. A cheerful smile, a pat on the back, a reassuring word-these were typical of Mr. Debus. This past term, he left Olney to take over his new duties as Head of the Physical Education Department at the Benjamin Franklin High School. Although we are glad to see him attain this good fortune, we cannot help but feel that we have lost a friend worthy of our greatest admiration, respect, and gratitude. To Mr. Debus, Olney gives a sincere thanks 80 I , . -f u Q V, 'flnf f, 0+ AW 4 .f MISS PHILLIPS There have been few teachers whom we, during our stay at Olney, have respected more than Miss Phillips. She was not only our teacher and our grade counsellor, but what is more important, a good friend to all her students and to those who found it necessary to seek her helpful advice. Though encumbered with numerous duties and obligations, she was never too busy for a friendly hello as she passed through the halls. We know that we have caused her continual worry, especially in the first days of school, with all our roster troubles and problems concerning our subjects. But it is evident that she has not thought of us as bothers, because her friendly manner and willingness to help have proved otherwise. Therefore, we offer our deepest thanks to Miss Phillips for all that she has done to make our years at Olney happy ones. 81 OUR PROM I don't think that I shall ever forget my prom. Memories of shopping, of searching, and of finding that special gown will always be within recall. Perhaps the best part of all, as I think back, was the air of expectancy that prevailed in the senior class during the week of Ianuary 20. Then Friday finally arrived: when the two-thirty bell rang, at last, I was freed from the confines of my solid geometry class. Reaching home in a matter of minutes fit usually took longer because of the stores that line the wayl, I began the procedure necessary to the occasion. Throughout the afternoon and early evening, I bathed, dressed, applied makeup, removed makeup, combed my hair, dabbed on perfume, and draped myself in yards of fluffy, white tulle. Still primping and fussing, I peered into the mirror and grinned at the new face that appeared there. Then I heard the door-bell ring, and assuming an air of pseudo-sophistication, I descended the stairs- there to greet the boyfriend Looking back, I remem- ber he complimented me, and I can see again the beautiful orchid, now lying yellow and pressed along with other such treasures. When we reached the prom, we were greeted by Mr. Marhefka and Mrs. Scanlan. There were endless other introductions, and then we were dancing to the dreamy music. The boyfriend and I made plans with other couples, and after the prom, we went to the various clubs in the city. Here we drank cokes with as much gusto as we would have drunk a cocktail. Coming out of the club, we saw that it was snow- ing. Gallantly, the Boyfriend held up my skirt from behind as we ran back to the car. II vaguely recall a run in my good nylons, too.l At last, very late, we reached home. Standing on the doorstep, the Boyfriend and I parted. II smile a little now, remembering it.l Then I went upstairs to bed and shut my eyes at the dawn coming in through the window . . . It was a wonderful Prom. 82 1 . V fZ 'bN XW ,.x ,N .'
