M4 SQIENIES Dear to 0 II 0UR HELMETS ARE 6.50 FF 4' J' .ff 'Q It is with deep appreciation of their indefatigable efforts, that we, the graduating class of June 1946, dedicate our record book to Mrs. Scanlan and Mr. Marhefka. Our class has been singularly fortunate in possessing two of the finest teachers in the school as our advisors. With a deep feeling of gratitude, we realize the many difficult tasks of Mrs. Scanlanls and Mr. Marhefka's posi- tion. XfVe are grateful for the guidance and assistance they have given us during the past three terms. Our task has been to ab- sorb the knowledge contained in our text books. VVe have learned to understand and appreciate the great works of litera' tureg the theory and practice of problems in physics, algebra, and chemistry, and the great past and glorious future of our country. Their task was one of the immediate present. All thoughts of our class trip, class day, and dances, would have fallen by the wayside if preparation for them had been left to us alone. But, our sponsors, freely giving of their own time, have helped us with all these projects. Their guiding hand kept our actions con- stantly to our purpose and within the bounds of common sense, giving the program a unity, without which it would have been practically worthless. Our sponsors' job has been to minister to the likes and dislikes of not merely a few individuals, but rather a student body of over four hundred, yet, reviewing the many happy hours we have spent, we cannot recall an instance when we have not benefited from their sound judgment. Al- though they, too, have out-of-school interests of their own, they gave unselfishly of their time and wise counsel. Theirs, indeed, has been a noble sacrificeg for they could hope for no reward other than the satisfaction of having done a job Well, and done it well they have. To this reward the members of the graduating class wish to add their sincere and whole-hearted gratitude. WVe can say nothing more, but thanks and ever thanks. Our lile at Olnev has taken us over rough and smooth paths, where never ending problems seemed unavoidable. However, the road has been made easier to travel by the never tiring ef- forts of our counselors. Thev have made our days here more pleasant and less perplexing by their manv acts of friendliness, and bv offering solutions to our numerous problems. Countless hours of worry have been saved bv our counselors' helpful suga geslions. They are always on the job, ready to be of aid to us when we need it most. Our hats are ol'l to Miss Irene Neuman, College Counselor, Miss Isabel Neuman, l2B Grade Counselor, Miss Hoover, Miss Root, and Miss Huston, Guidance Counselors. Their friendliness and patience with us will be remembered along with the many other factors that made our stay at Olney a pleasant one. I8 TIRUJIAN SPONSORS The Olney Trojan was again under the able supervision of Mrs. Micocci, Mr. McCann. and Mr. Schoenly. Once again they helped us produce our class yearbook, and we are sincerely grateful to them. Mrs. Micocci spent her time and effort with the literary stall. She spent many mornings with the group, advising them and inspiring them. Mr. McCann handled the art work. His sug- gestions were very helpful, and he made Olney's Trojan of '46 a colorful and artistic thing. The business angle was one that required work and sound attention. Mr. Schoenly devoted his time to aiding the selling and financing of our yearbook. Speaking for the entire senior body, the staff wishes to extend thanks to the Busy Three , our popular sponsors, Mrs. Micocci, Mr. McCann. and Mr. Schoenly. 19 -x.. F - 'I' Dr.. There seems to be a greater demand for dances and skates to which our budding Casanovas can escort their lovely ladies. There must be groups to plan all these ai'l'airs, however. Therefore, each of the upper books elects a member to serve on a council for its particular class. The council officers are nominated at a convention, and are voted in by the stu- dents. Each class has sponsors to guide its council. The various committees work in harmony to work out good ideas for every occasion and to insure social and financial success. The l2B class had a capable, eflicient Council, that planned our social doings well. Class Day was especially enjoyable, and the other events were run to every- one's satisfaction. The sponsors, Mr. Marhefka and Mrs. Scanlan, helped in every way. 24 AC UNCL I n'.x'1'rl1'11l ...... .... Q jerry Pollack IY1.I'!'-IJl'I'.S'l'!I!'I1f . . . ...,.. Our band has led us through many vic- tories on the football field. Lots of luck, boys! GOLF CL B 44 EASTER-PASS 0 VER PLA Y A second Easter-Passover play was presented this year. The production was entitled Landing Room Only. lt was written by Mr. Segal and Mrs. Newman of our own English department, and consisted of live scenes. lt concerned a war veteran, lVilliam Jones, who, while attending a reunion, meets other men who fought in his regiment. They represent many different races and religions. Because of an accident, he becomes unconscious, and dreams of visiting three different countries: Thiswon , Thatwon',, and Totherwonl'. These countries are separated from each other by a glass wall, which must be taken down in order to build an airfield. The play differed from Reunion , the play presented last year, in that it was humorous, rather than serious. Both plays, however, stressed the idea of brother- hood and good-fellowship. Landing Room Only had its own songs and lyrics. The lyrics were by Mr. Schliefer, the music by Mr. Segal, and the arrangement by Mr. Levengood. The choir was coached by Mr. Nitsche. The presentation was sponsored by the Better Relations Committee of the Faculty and by the Fellowship Club. Invitations were sent to many people in the city who are interested in intercultural relations. 45 INIATUQNA IHIQJINICDR 5506 UETY 9 E M ? ss ,J JACK FIN,K - President 1IONOR SOCIETY Of the illustrious one per-cent of the student body which com- prises the Honor Society, Hfteen members are graduating this term. The highlights were the victories over Northeast and Dobbins. The team owes much thanks to its captains. -lerrv Geever and 'Bill Kilpatrick. They have broken the lfltll league record. Nlannv Ulassman helped in doing this: he bowled a st-ore ol' 2lI. Since the team has witnessed many triumphs, we all hope they will be victorious a great many more times. B0 WLING TEAM 52 GYM TEAM 'l'his year the gym team had a very successful year and finished in second place in the league. The star gymnasts were I-Iugh Goldstein, Charles Hainsworth, -lay Bean, Richard Deigle, Arnold Shapiro. The boys ol' our fine tennis team got oll' to an early start. Many came out with the great enthusiasm that characterizes Oh1ey's sports teams. That one corner ol' our Athletic field where the courts are situated was constantly busy with the Jealous candidates. The boys realile without the aid and assistance of their coach Mr. McCann their going would have been more difficult. TENNIS TEAM 53 TBA CII TEAM Our 1946 track team had a fairly successlul season because ol' the spirit with which the boys applied themselves. Some of the individual performers were Walt Churchill in the hall'-mile. Herb Schiller in the mile. Ernie Kolinsky in the hundred yard dash, 'l'om Swan in the hurdles, and many other outstanding boys like Carpenter, Beiler, Silverman, O'Neill, Cooper. l.itt. Seipp, Carmy, Davis, Glassman. Snyder, XVilson. and Hopkinson. Olney's aquatic lassies. under the capable direction of their coach, Mrs. Virginia Shields, have formed an especially good team this season. The girls had a heavy schedule and they worked enthusiastically throughout the term. GIRLS' SWIMMING CLUB 54 Sparked by a great one-two combination, John XValsh and Herb Schiller, Olney High's l945 Cross-Country Team finished the season with a fine record. In the course of defeating XVoodbury High, Northeast, Germantown, Ben Franklin, John Bartram, Southern, and Roxborough, our harriers captured two triangular meets and finished second in two other contests. Beside XValsh and Schiller. the other varsity recipients were Bill Carpenter, Bob Beiler, jay Surkin, Don Thoroughgood, Jerry Simon, Leon Margolis, Harold Yaffe, Gene Coldblnm, and Gerry Snyder. CIIIISS-CIIULVTIIY TEAM GIRLS' IIOCKEY TEAM Under the fine coaching of Mrs. Liese the hockey team had a very successful season. Combining skill and teamwork they completed the season with seven wins and one tie. Perhaps it was the new mascot, Sparky, that led them to vic- tories, but we prefer to think it was the desire and ability of the girls to light and win. YVe are sure that the fine spirit of the team will be carried on. V 5 5 W . .anh.dnlZu, , Our 1945 football team. under the able coaching ol' Mr. Barron was moderately successful. The end of the season found us with four victories, four losses and one tie. Captain Bernie Lemonick, ably backed up by Charlie Ellman, Bob Lesnick, Dick Stall, and Martin Bogos, and others. tried his best to keep the games fair and exciting-symbols of good sportsmanship. FO0TBALL TEAAM SHCCER TEANI The soccer team under the direction ol' Mr. Brink and their worthy captain Fred Scheliga obtained 5th place in the league this year. We entered from many different schools, and for a short time we mingled only with our own crowds. The boys from Barton staying with each other, those from Creighton and other schools would not even associate with one another. As the term went on we broke down this social barrier until we could not even remember who did or did not graduate with us from grammar school. We soon stopped boasting of our grammar schools and became good Olneyites. It wasn't long before we were introduced to the first rules of de- mocracy in Olney. We got down to electing our senators and made a wise choice by elect- ing Renee Spector and Paul Cutler. Our new senators were rather green , but they soon learned what to do. They began working hard for the freshman class. After the thrill of first election, we settled down to work. The school work seemed difficult because it was different from grammar school. However, we found the S.A. under Dominic De Lauren- tis was a great moral builder, and with the entertainment and shows, it provided the rest from study that was needed. Many of our school' chums began their great careers in Olney at this early date. Bill Carpenter and Ken Yoder went out for track and were elected to offices. Bill remembers how he looked at Dominic with envy never realizing that one day he would be in Dominic's place. Jack Fink also, who started out on the Honor Roll, held Thomas Sayer, the president of the Honor Society, with such esteem. Jack became the president of the Society. Phylis Gansz, Herbert Schiller, Betty Kosty, and Ken Yoder had already won honor awards for their line work. Though we were handicapped in many ways by the war, we managed to have our fun. We never forget our period of adjustment or the pride of being a high school student or the other small things which have made our stay in Olney a pleasant one. SOPHOMORES By this time we had lost that feeling of newness and bewilderment, and we were ready to welcome our new friends from junior High Schools. Our class had grown and we were now ready to begin our real high school careers. Until Mr. Haines became our principal, we were under the very able guidance of Mrs. Fink and Dr. Greenwood. Their untiring ef- forts will always be remembered. We had gained our footing now, and could appreciate the great work of the S. A. with Donald Campbell as Prexy and Dotty Mc- Cuen and Bill Zimmerman doing a fine job of assisting him. V At this time we were beginning to feel the pangs of war, and we knew that it was our duty to bring some joy to our 2,484 former Olneyites in the Service of our country. So, with our newly developed Victory Corps, we sent Christmas greetings to everyone of these men and women. And so we had completed the first half of our Sophomore year, ready and willing to start the next with greater effort and deter- mination to chalk-up a successful term. , Our big three for the term were, Zip Zimmerman, doing a grand job as president, with Peggy Lentz and Cliff Lockyer as .vice- presidents. Again, the cream had come to the top by the presence of these leaders. The big event of the school was the Leap Year Drag. Although, the girls have such an opportunity so rarely, they Were, nevertheless, quite bashful maidens when it came to meet- ing the objectives. But the affair did'turn out to be a huge success And then on May 17 we witnessed one of our greatest thrills. Besides escaping a ni-ght of homework, we viewed the dances, exercises, and songs of our first Field Day. We were also very proud of our new mascot, Lady, who was introduced at this affair. This year our Baseball team was on top, winning all but two games, through the hard hitting of such fellows as, Tony Covello and Ted Kuhn. Our Gym team also came into the limelight, through its captain, Bob Young. And so we completed our Sophomore year, ready to strive for greater aims as juniors. JUNIORS A In our junior year Cliff Lockyer, as presi- dent of the S.A., guided Olney with Anna Schneider and Harry Ingram as vice-presi- dents. Our representatives in the Senate were Mae Wood and Bill Carpenter. The football team held our old rival, Frankford to a 13-13 score. That was the day Pop Bechtel roused the stands with a cheer that had never been equalled. We were all thrilled to beable to leave the stands holding our heads just as high as anyone from Frank- ford. The annual Thanksgiving game found Ed Carr, johnny Berger, jim Donahue and Captain Andy Kerr in there fighting a hard battle against Gratz. Their efforts brought results, for the final score was 19-13. Olney, of course, was the victor. The second half' of the term Harry Ingram was the lucky candidate who became school president. Jacqueline Ferrell and Leo Dona- hoe were vice-presidents. Ed Carr very early in the term received the W. Crowell trophy awarded to the best player in and around Philadelphia. The junior jumble was held at Somer- ton, February 2, and we all had a wonderful time. One day the girls were in a dither. Reason? Lon' McAllister was in the assembly along with George Reeves and Gilbert Herman. Mae Wood was elected president of our class with Jane Dickson, vice-president, june Scheidel, secretary, George Sarkis, treasurer to help her. Mrs. Scanlan and Mr. Marhefka became our sponsors. The May-Day celebration was a huge suc- cess. The day was beautiful and everything in the program was equal to the weather. Is it any wonder that We very reluctantly said good-bye to the title of junior when so many memorable events took place during that year? . SENIORS ' Yes, the great day had come, and after three long years of tedious toil, we were finally Seniors. We all resolved to make this last year one to remember, and it quickly got underway. Our Student Association this term was un- der the leadership of jackie Ferrell as presi- dent, Florence Green and William Carpenter as vice-presidents, june Gray as secretary, and Ken Yoder, as treasurer. These efficient oflicers resolved to' show us bigger and better S.A. shows and dances this year. They started to achieve this goal by the success of their Hal- loween dance, The Witches Whirl , which brings back pleasant memories to all of us. Right on the heels of Halloween came Thanksgiving, with our annual game with Gratz. This year it was held at our own field rather than the field at La Salle. We'll never forget the compact appearance of the stands that day. The Band and Choir were in the limelight during Christmas, when they rendered a beau- tiful Christmas Concert which was a great spiritual experience for all who attended it. Shortly after the Christmas holidays, our 12A class officers, Mae Wood, George Sarkis, Helen Reiman, and Richard Zahn, along with the Council were racking their brains about final plans for our Senior Prom. We had a fine turnout at our informal dance held at Somerton, and we wanted the Prom to be the climax of a successful term. It was just that, for will anyone ever forget the night of Jan- uary 18th when we all danced at the Ben- jamin Franklin Hotel to the music of joe F rasetto and his orchestra? The favors of sterling silver, with blue and white enamel, and with the school seal, were worn by the Olney Femmes with a great deal of pride, for they were the first of their kind since the war. Finally we bade good-bye to the 12B class, and placed ourselves in their shoes, hoping they would carry us through our last term. The newly elected officers of the Student Association this term were president, William Carpenterg vice-presidents, Virginia Scott and Anthony De Laurentisg and our secretary, june and treasurer, Ken were carried over from the previous term. This new S.A. told us to expect to see our new band uniforms by Field Day, and they also gave us some inside information about a new project here at Olney known as The Date Bureau . We also made some changes in our 12B class oflicers, and found that the girls had quite over-powered the boys. We were now led by Floss Green, as Prexyg Alice Hamilton, as vice-prexyg Margret Pierson, as secretary, and june Scheidel, as treasurer. How we looked forward to our class trip which was to be a boat ride up the Hudson to Bear Mountain, followed by Class Day. We knew that they would be the end of our carefree school days, and the beginning of various, new careers. 68 ll-HIE Illlllflllkfll The Senior Prom of january eighteenth, nineteen hundred and forty-six met and sur- passed the requirements for a successful af- fair! We who attended the dance will long remember the happiness and enjoyment which that convivial occasion afforded us, and we will remember too, with pride, the pleasure and the thrill that came from dressed formally and from stepping out . For weeks before the Prom, while prepara- tions were being made, nervous young men could be seen asking their best girls to ac- company them to the dance, and in response to these requests were usually heard timid replies in the affirmative. Finally, when all our preparations were made, and all our difliculties were ironed out, we had only to await that certain Friday night, and how long that wait seemed! At last, the morning of the prom came, and we went to school as usual, although in what seemed to be a happier than usual mood. The fact that half of the girls were absent that day and that the other half had their hair set in tight curls covered with kerchiefs did not surprise us in the least. What did surprise us, though, was that the teachers gave their accustomed tests, for some- how we thought that they would excuse us on that day of days. But the day was soon over, and we hastened on our merry way home. Long before it was time, we were dressed in all our finery and were gazing at ourselves in the mirror. After we bade our families adieu and promised to be home at a certain hour fwe triedlj, we left for the dance. The night was one of those brisk winter evenings that makes one feel glad to be alive. The stars winked down from a cloudless sky as if to give their official approval of our costumes. A When we arrived at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, we were met by the blinding light of the Hash blubs of some of our school mates' cameras. This certainly made us feel as though we were celebrities. Inside we were greeted by Mrs. Scanlan and Mr. Marhefka who distributed the prom favors. When we entered the ballroom, we beheld a scene of great festivity. Young couples were dancing blithely across the smooth floor to the strains of 'Tm Always Chasing Rainbows. Soon we too took advantage of the music, and we danced and danced. One of the highlights of the evening came when Joe Frasetto and his very able orchestra played the request songs of all the Twelve A classes. These ranged from Symphony to The One O'- clock Jump , and they pleased everyone. After we had danced several dances, we no- ticed that it was getting late and that the crowd was beginning to disperse. Much to our chagrin, the prom was over and it was time to leave. Following the long established custom, we and most of our friends rwent to a night-club after the dance. Here we ate, although we weren't particularly hungry, eagerly watched the colorful Hoor show g and danced again, but on a smaller and more crowded floor. Here too, being forbidden any other drink, we made the best 'of our Coco-colas. At last, the lights were turned on brightly as a gentle hint to all that the club was closing. Reluc- tantly, although now a bit sleepily, we got our coats and left. 10h yes, we paid our billlj Afterwards, we took our dates home fthe long wayj, and then we went home to dream of the wonderful time we had had.
