A TRIBUTE EVERY book that is worth reading must have a theme, a purpose for having been written. Every life that is worth living should also have a theme or purpose. Every action worth doing should fulfill the same requirement. Our lives and our ac- tions during our sojourn in high school have fulfilled that requirement. Our purpose has been to improve ourselves morally, mentally, and physically. We have striven to attain the ideals set for us in our reading. You, Mr. Montanye, have constantly kept this goal before us, and aided us in our pursuit of it by providing, not only the ideals themselves, but also the knowledge necessary to attain those ideals. Your guiding hand, keeping our actions constant to our purpose and within the bounds of common sense, has given our life at Olney a unity without which it would have been practically worthless. Without this constancy of purpose, our book of high school life would have been merely a series of detached events. The adherence of the theme, however, has created coherence where chaos would otherwise have been present. We shall be eternally grateful to you for having so wisely guided our path, and we assure you in words of the Dane that: -thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of our brains, Unmixed with baser matter. - EDWIN Y. MONTANYE

PREFACE IN attempting to face squarely the problems of this world as graduates of high school, we fully realize the many trials and tribulations for which we must prepare ourselves. Cognizant, as we are, of the vicissitudes of life, we naturally do not fear the times when we shall be riding on the crest of the wave, but we are apprehensive of the times when we shall be struggling in the trough of that wave swelling omi- nously about us and threatening to en- gulf us at any moment. It is then, when the tide of life seems at its lowest ebb, that one must find some source of com- fort. We feel sure that this source of comfort, to which we shall invariably turn, is literature. ln selecting literature as the theme of our record book, we, the class of Iune, 1937, are anticipating the part books will play later in our lives, not only when unfortunate cir- cumstances compel us to seek solace within their covers but also when we venture into its confines bent on pleas- ure at times when fortune has smiled upon us. Our interests in literature have been carefully nurtured at Olney, and it is certain they will stand us in good stead. ln compiling this volume the Trojan editors have allowed liter- ature to permeate naturally all parts of this book, just as literature permeates naturally all walks of life.
