Dr. Leslie Parrott President of the College THE OLIVET ATTITUDE ... a feeling we get Even strangers coming on the campus of Olivet Nazarene College talk about a feeling they get which is hard to explain. I have heard this from visiting speakers, accreditation committees, and even tradesmen workin g in the buildings. Bill Gaither mentioned it at the close of his concert here last fall. What is this feeling people get? And where does it come from? The floors are clean. The windows are washed. Paintings are on the walls. But that is not it. Faculty and students attend chapel with readiness to listen. Speakers almost always talk about how reverent chapel is. The campus is adequate and well groomed. At night the lights on the estate fence glow atop the symmetrical pillars along Olivet Street. But these symbols of care and concern for our environment are not what people feel. What guests sense on this campus is an attitude. It ' s the Olivet attitude. It ' s the united combined, corporate way of thinking which dominates relationships, decision making and social interaction on this campus. It ' s courtesy. It ' s awareness. It ' s the concern by the President and the Student Council for the quality of life at Olivet. It ' s the desire for students to be a cut above students on other campuses. It ' s redeeming the way we live, how we dress, and the seriousness we give to our studies, It ' s living out the twin priorities of the library and the chapel as a central focus of symbolic concern on campus. It ' s the attention of the dean of students and the business manager to have a better food service! not a cheaper one. It ' s the concern of the academic dean to integrate fine arts into Christian faith and learning, and to support the director of development in equipping high-quality students to represent Olivet now, and in the expanding corps of loyal alumni who are spread all over the world. Olivet drop-outs do not always catch this spirit. But students who see it through for four years and graduate take something special away from this campus: a diploma in their hands, a structure of learning in their heads, and the embodiment of the Olivet attitude in their hearts. This Olivet attitude is the personification of our slogan: Education with a Christian Purpose. — Leslie Parrott, Ph.D 18 DR. PARROTT
